Starfleet Academy - It's Happening

Lura Thok was missing and not mentioned as far as I recall.

I'm not going to lie, this episode moved me , the last ten minutes especially.

I know the people that don't like it will continue to not like it, but they can fuck all the way off.
Damn dust in my apartment causing me to shed a tear or two. Or perhaps I was chopping onions while watching this episode. Yeah that must be it.

I liked this one. I like how they’re reaching and stretching with each episode. If the last one was The Breakfast Club and TNG’s Family, this one stole from another prestige teen source: My So-Called Life, and its episode “Betrayal”, which also framed its teen drama around the school’s production of the play Our Town.

It works here too, mostly because Our Town is the ultimate original teen drama. Thornton Wilder injects his poetic verse into stoic, unsentimental New England, and its themes are well explained by everyone in the episode. It’s almost overkill, but the analogies they pull have truth to them.

Picardo gets some really good moments, and the actress playing SAM fucking deserves an Emmy nom, not that it will happen, but still.

This show is an interesting teen drama in a Trek wrapper, stretching and shaking out its first season bugs. It’s not “the best thing ever” but it’s also not an abomination, and people trying to paint it as such are just looking a little silly at this point…

So I guess the Doctor never married that blonde lady from the future (and named himself Joe), before Admiral Janeway changed the timeline in Endgame. I was wondering if he was going to mention if he had gotten married to anyone in the last 800 years...

And curiously enough, you just validated the thoughts of many of the show's detractors. Paramount didn't advertise this show as "an interesting teen drama" in any variation of that idea. They advertised it as a Star Trek show.

You hit the nail on the head... it's a teen show painted up to look like Star Trek. Those of us who have been saying it looks and feels like a mid-season replacement on the CW called it, and it seems you more or less agree.

I'm glad to hear it's "shaking out it's first season bugs" because second season is it, and that's only 10 episodes as well. There will be no third unless another show runner steps up and makes a serious course correction for this series.

Not impossible, but not bloody likely.

Before you or anyone else states "yeah, but look at TNG season 1" (and I more or less agree, though I have fond memories of that season here and there), that season had 25 episodes to work out the kinks. That's five more than what SFA will ever have.

Nice try, Kurtzman; I was always leery of any sort of Academy show for the genre, and now I see why.

Or, ya know, you could just not watch it.

Like Wacky I had no knowledge of the play, so it was a little hard to follow in that respect. I imagine it would’ve had a bigger impact if I’d known for instance that the main character was a ghost (if I was understanding correctly). But I wasn’t against the idea of exploring the horror of the Miyazaki. In previous shows characters have just stoically got on with things but it makes sense that some teens would need time to deal with what they’d experienced.

I’ve never been a Tilly fan but I must admit she was well used here.

I did find it very noticeable that only the main cast were present in the lesson. Apparently their class has dramatically reduced in number conveniently?

The SAM/EMH stuff was great. Artistically done and very emotional. I was surprised they linked back to that episode of Voyager though. Not exactly a fan favourite even if it was relevant. They’ve been hinting for a while that the Doctor was traumatised by outliving people important to him and I’d hoped when the time came to address it he’d be talking about the Voyager crew.

An interesting interjection which had nothing to do with what I posted.

Hey, I'm gonna float an idea by you, and you're probably not going to like it.

Anyone can express opinions about something as they will, and that opinion might not sit right with you.

That's too bad.

I hear shit every day I don't like. I deal with it.

Now, I've been a ST watcher since about 1971-1972. I think my opinions on ST are pretty grounded. If I want to express my thoughts on a ST show, or any show, I will. I'm not sure if the poster block function still works on this board, but if you can't handle my input, I suggest you use it.

I'm basing my opinions about SFA on the pilot episode which I watched in tandem with synopses I read, pics I see, ratings I check, and opinions from both camps, and I think you're fixated on the turd as it's circling the water. I would suspect you're simply angry because it's the type of ST you want to watch and it's getting shitcanned due to low fan participation.

I dig; I was mad with Firefly was cancelled. But I got over it.

So, I dunno why you posted what you did; I've been pretty open about not wasting my time with this crappy show, so it baffles me why you said that.

But my opinion I will express, cool?

And some of us are free to ignore it, since it's the borrowed opinions of others by someone who isn't even watching the show.

Fine by me. You think anyone who doesn't agree with you is a "fascist" so... there you go.

But, see... I'm actually able to form an opinion of my own based on information from different places; I don't need to have my opinion given to me.

Geez Louise... I'm getting vibes from early 2000s TrekBBS. Ironic since ostracizing members with contrary opinions is what led to the formation of TK. :ROFLMAO:

Oh sweetheart, I'm not worried about your opinion or your right to express it. Feel free. I don't particularly like the show either, but at least I've watched it and don't rely on ragebaiting youtubers to form my opinion for me. :ROFLMAO:

Yes you are. ;)

As I stated above, and I know reading is hard... I form my opinions from multiple sources in both camps, plus reading synopses and feed back from all over the place.

You just don't wanna hear it. ;)

Nah, I really don't care. And before you pull the "har har you made a response, you care I trolled you!" card, save it for someone who deserves it. Which, that was played out 25 years ago.

Now if you said you hated TMP I'd crawl through the screen and strangle you.

Nah, that's Blowtorch territory.

I don't hate TMP, but it's not on my rota of ST movies to watch.

It’s quite easy to ignore something if you don’t like it. Just click on their profile and select the ignore function.

We've spent many years evolving the MF into a forum where you didn't have to ignore people. But Pooch has decided not to read the room and say "it's TK so be as big a dick as possible" -- which literally nobody has even bothered to expend that energy here in years. It's like someone still trying to fight WW2 -- dude, look at a calendar. The war was over a long time ago. That's my only point to make here.
