So, it's out and there's a lot of noise around it. It's certified fresh on RT, and from the people I generally follow online, the ones who like what I like, the film seems to be a hit with them.
Superman is a strange one for me though, since the character means so much. I'm not very objective. I can enjoy Marvel and Batman films without getting emotionally invested because, while I like the characters, it's nothing like the feelings and protectiveness I have toward Supes. My interest has slowly risen over the past year or so, shifting from a sceptical position into what is now my most hyped film in years.
I won’t get to see it for a while, Greek island and all that, and we’re usually a month behind here, but I’m really looking forward to it. None of the negative reviews have dampened that at all, because the people who do love it seem to align more with what I’m hoping to get out of the film than the naysayers. I’m not talking about the MAGA types and Snyderbros throwing tantrums. They’re not relevant. That said, there are definitely people who don’t like this film for genuine reasons, and fair enough, but the positive buzz has outweighed that by a fair margin.
Also, as I’ve said before, I’m totally on board with the “comic book come to life” style this film is going for, which I think is throwing some people off.
I’ve got to say, the marketing for this film has been pretty incredible too. Not something I’d usually bring up, but it’s been handled really well. I did laugh when they tried to cancel Gunn at the eleventh hour for saying he doesn’t listen to online comments because it could be some 12-year-old in India. It was obvious what he meant, but the usual suspects tried (and failed) to spin it into something racial.
That said, three days later they release this

Also, Nicholas Hoult brought Michael Rosenbaum as his +1 to the premier which is just awesome lol.

I grok this completely. Captain America came close in the Marvel movies for a while, but Superman is just a whole different level. He's not just a guy in tights, not just a superhero. Superman is an aspiration. As the line in Superman, the Movie had it: "They can be a great people, Kal-El, they wish to be. They lack only the light to show them the way." That is the essence of Superman.

On that note, this is why I prefer the 1989 Burton "Batman" to the Nolanverse trilogy. Nolan boosters will say "It's more realistic and believable." And I say "you mean the story of a millionaire who dresses up like a bat and fights crime?" The Burton movies are unabashedly comic books. They're over the top. One critic at the time called "Batman" "operatic."

So with all the Superman hype of late Iv'e been reading some early Silver Age stuff in the mornings with my breakfast on the patio. I'm having a blast. It's so fucking funny.
We all know how convoluted, misogynistic and downright insane some of this material is but this one I just had to share. It's from a collection I'm reading which were from the late 50s and early 60s and were printed in the Sunday Newspapers.
This one is my favourite so far. There is so much going on. Superman is a proper gaslighting menace
