The Golden Compass

Philip Pullman has never made a secret of not being a Christian, any more than Douglas Adams did. Was there also an uproar about Adams' athiesm? I can't recall if so.

But to cast him [Pullman]as some kind of anti-christian writer bent on warping the minds of little kiddies away from christianity is lame; his audience was always inteneded to be young adults, not children.

In fact, IMHO, His Dark Materials would be a very hard slog for most kiddies to understand in any event, given the layers of symbolism and erudite references. They might glean the message that using religion to oppress is a bad thing, but mostly they'll just enjoy a fantasy adventure.

I am wondering how much of the subtlies of the books will be translatable on-screen....

I already know of one Christian fundie who won't be allowing his children to watch the movies or read the books. Of course he also believes that the Earth is about 7,000 yrs old. He is one of the most frustrating people I've met on the internet.. can't believe he is a scifi fan.

I doubt the subtleties of the books will be translated much at all. They're watering it all down, and basically making it a fantasy/adventure. I doubt anyone who hasn't read the books or read about the books online will get the comparisons to organized religion, or any of the other messages that make the books so great.

What are you talking about, Earth is 7,000 years old. God made it with the Big Bang and made monkeys which evolved into Adam and Eve. They, along with lots of inbreeding made non retarded kids that populated the entire earth which was flooded by the melting of the ice caps.

Come on... Tell him that technically, us, as human beings weren't supposed to 'evolve' past nudity. Also, inform this guy that if he likes sci-fi then movies, which are technological at any rate, should not be taken as literally as religion.

Those two can't coincide.

Well, it's kind of like this.

Red propositioned the board about a business deal or made some sob story about a financial hardship back when he was admin and, I believe, still partial owner of TK. He asked the members to contribute funds to help him out and promised to pay the money back when things got better. Some people, being completely retarded, actually sent him funds. And he promptly disappeared with the money.

He wasn't honest about shit! Red told people he was working on a special project to better the board and then members that were stupid enough to give him money outed him later as the pathetic loser he is. He never paid them back and scammed them out of the money so he could pay his light bill or some such shit.

You have to admit it's cool that he's able to run electricity through his cardboard box condo though.

I'm curious about your failures around here Whacker. What is it that makes a person so completely untrustworthy (like yourself) keep posting in a place where NO ONE has any respect for you?

I find it funny, it that sad way.

Ouch!!! getting all personal their Bub.

No need to lose your cool over one neg.

Gagh was one of the people who sent him money.

If people are stupid enough to senf money, they deserve what they get.
Yet again kindness is supposed to be halted by not being sure of your fellow man, THIS, my good friend, is the world we live in.

I'm hopefully going to see this sometime in the near future.

If GTC comes down, I'll drag him along. And then I'll review it for OUCH :D

Are we still talking about The Golden Compass, here? Because if we are, I'd like to contribute my two cents: it sucked.

My friend wanted to see it, so we went. It didn't make a lot of sense. It just felt like someone was trying desperately to cram allegory down my throat. Now I sorta want to read the books just to get the bad taste of the movie out of my mouth.......

But my biggest problem with the movie was that Daniel Craig did not have a naked torture scene.

Oh, and I realize that the second paragraph is rife with opportunities to make oral sex jokes.

Yeah, it was pretty terrible. Everone walking around explaining what was happening instead of showing it. The little bit of Christian allegory that was there was simplistic and heavy-handed. I liked how Sam Elliott's character was pretty much the same guy he played in The Big Lebowski!

Well that sucks.. I was looking forward to seeing it. The books were kickass.

I'm with BG here. Who cares! It looks like a good movie, I'll probably suggest that my brother take my niece and nephew to go see it.

I like what Tom Hanks said when there was all the controversy surrounding...Oh gosh the title escapes me but it's about how Jesus had a daughter...Anyway, Tom Hanks said, "It's a movie, it's entertainment. It's not fact, we're not even pretending it's fact."

What happened to going to movies for an escape?

You're a Jew.

I am saddened to inform you that your opinion doesn't count.

The Golden Compass, among many other blasphemous books/movies is a product of Zionist Jewish lobbying aiming to eradicate Christianity from the face of this Earth.

Quite hypocritical of Jooowz advocating freedom of speech, when at the slightest opportunity, they jump on people's necks accusing them of "anti-semitism".

Jesus was a Jew. Pull your head out of your @$$.

Jesus buttfucked Judaism (intentionally or unintentionally) and transformed it from a mainstream religion to a cult surviving through lobbying, conspiracies, and murder.

But, it is ironic that the religion he founded is sharing the same fate, and the Joooowz are trying their best to transform Christianity from a mainstream religion to a cult surviving through lobbying, conspiracies, and murder.

But Islam will dominate them both someday.

The movie's almost never as good as the book...

Every asshole/geek/wannabe/someone trying to act knowledgeable on a certain topic has to regurgitate this aberrant mantra.

"..but the book is better"

Always remember two films that were much better than the books:

Jaws

The Godfather
