The Golden Compass

The book probably is better. JUST SAYING OK?

In some books the characters have a lot of internal dialog, and thought just isn't portrayed on screen very well.

Saw Golden Compass the other day. The good: Nicole Kidman and Sam Elliot are two of my favorites. Excellent visuals. The bad: this release was an obvious set up for future movies. The storytelling was a tad bit more than lame. All of the obstacles that were put in the kid's way were too easily overcome. The plot plodded along very much like the Chronicles of Narnia movie, too, complete with the "big battle" scene at the end. In comparison, Narnia is the better movie. I didn't think much of Narnia and think less of Golden Compass.

I would not take young children to see this movie because the fight between the bears is almost too violent and grotesque for me.

The religious undertones are far more subtle than Narnia, so much so they practically don't exist. I don't think I would use this movie as an example of anything other than bad fantasy fiction.

Yes, The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass.

I figured they'd tone down the anti-religious stuff and pump up the action.

I thought they handled the killing quite well, no blood, just the Daemons bursting into golden dust.

But yes, the bear fight, with one knocking the lower jaw off the other was a bit suprizing.

You'll like the books much better.

I don't know that I will read these books. The characters seem to me to be undeveloped, existing only as plot devices and the action already made cliche by other movies. "Luke, I am your father."

Plus, it appears Roger's destiny was changed in the movie retelling which negates a crucial turning point for the heroine of the story.

If the writing is good, maybe I will read the books after I've forgotten this movie.

The books are definitely worth reading. I haven't seen the movie, but I know they usually dumb them down and cram as much action in them as possible. The books are filled with subtle meaning, that I'm sure was impossible to translate.

What did they do to Roger in the movie?

The synopsis of the books I read states that Roger is separated from his demon and he dies. That event is the catalyst that leads Lyra to fulfill the prophecy regarding her. However, in the movie, Roger is separated from his demon and does not die and thereby removes the catalyst for Lyra's future actions. Plus, this act appears to have happened too early in the movie and probably should not have happened in this movie at all but in a sequel. Also, the relationship between Lyra and Roger is not developed to a degree that would lead me to believe she would make decisions that would alter worlds based on that relationship going the way it is at this moment. She might cry and be sad for him, fear for herself and the rest of the children, increase her interest in dust, but even the movie plays it as if what happened to Roger is of little consequence to her.

In the book it happened right at the end, and it affects her a great deal since she was trying to rescue Roger and thought he would be safe when they reached her father. Her father betrayed her, which is part of what made the book so sad. It sounds like they fucked it up good. I don't think I'll make any effort to see the movie.

I was actually going to go and see this last night, but wouldn't you know, it's only playing in the shittiest theater in the area. I had free tickets to a nice theater, so my friends and I went to see the 2nd National Treasure movie.

That is definitely one I'll be seeing at the theater. My kind of movie.

I'll be seeing this one too. They made it just for me.

"I Am Legend" is on my short list too.

Got movie passes for Christmas so that makes the movies even better!
