The WF SECRET Personal Information thread...

Here's the deal... I'm glad Hood can come back. I'm happy that Lanz lifted the ban. I also don't want to just abandon TK after their hospitality towards us. I like this board. I also want to thank MM for all of her hospitality, she has been very instrumental in our success. I feel like we owe TK a shot. It's growing on me, and if MM can get us some of our familiar smilies I'll be even happier still.

:techman: :bergman: :bailey: :ramen37:

Exactly. Tee-Kay has been more than generous to us and MissManners has been more than a generous host. We shouldn't abandon her, never to be exact. We can all own two places online, right>

Ancalagon, I didn't get to finish telling you about the last episode of Enterprise. After Riker and Troi discuss how quaint the ship is, they kill off Trip, the fans' favorite character.

I regret that I did not get to have an ST:TWOK/ST:TSFS conversation with you, Volpone.

Originally posted to Gonad in the Seattle Meetup thread, but works here as well:

This has been a very positive first step.

However as has been said before, Hood was just a catalyst. How are we to know that the mentality that led to the ban, and the response, has actually changed. Right now it just seems like TPTB realized they fucked up and are throwing us a bone to get us back. What's to stop this from happening again in six months? 12?

I've always been in favour of some kind of staff rotations, and while I disagreed with Lanzmans initial stance on the Hood issue and some of the things that were said, I think you should give him a chance.

In the past Lanzman has almost always been one of the staff members right at the front of arguing for more transparency, faster shelter releases, etc. A few of the posts he made before Christmas seemed out of character and I think that was why you saw so many staff members also expressing their disagreement, because it was unexpected.

Ancalagon: That's retarded! I thought Coto was supposed to have been good!
Indeed. But because they wanted to ensure the series finale was a "love letter to the fans", Berman and Braga insisted on writing it themselves. :S:

Like I said, good on him for having a change of heart. And loads of thanks to you and O2C for playing conscience. But it's a day late and a dollar short right now. The ruling only came after the "it's not going to happen and that's final" post and us coming over here.

While we've been here we've gotten whatever we've asked for unless it wasn't possible. If that was the case we got politely told why we couldn't have it and were given possible alternative solutions. In my book it would be incredibly shitty to just say "OK. Thanks. We got what we wanted, so now we're leaving again." And even if it wasn't, it would be strategically stupid. Because then the next time there's a problem (and there's no reason, given how this one was handled, that there won't be a next time) we've really got nowhere to go.

More like a bitch slap to the fans from what I've heard.

Killing off Trip (the most popular and beloved character in the show) - and in such a lame and should have been preventable way - was just crap writting, IMHO. And then making it all - the very last episode of the series - into just a lame TNG holodeck exercise by Riker, did NOT set well with the dedicated fans as you can imagine.

And it's really too bad that it ended that way...because I think that when Manny Coto came on board to steer the series in season 4, and the Reeves-Stevens duo started pinning some decent episodes, the show was finally begining to reach up to it's unrealized potential. B

ut then B&B just destroyed all that work with one big clusterbomb of an episode.

I heard that they even wrote an entire Enterprise novel, "The Good That Men Do" iirc, just to undo what the finale did to that character - I assume perhaps by using the fact that we didn't actually see those events actually unfold, but we just saw a holodeck simulation of those events (likely pieced together by logs and witness accounts) that was playing some 200 years later, so it's possible that for some reason the facts could have been...altered or burried or something. But I haven't read it yet, so I don;t know why that wassupposedly done. I might consider giving it a shot some day soon, since I keep hearing it refered to on TrekBBS...

I'm not saying I won't give him a chance, I'm just saying I'm waiting to see what changes he is going to propose after the NY.

I'd like for there to be some substantial changes, not just faster Shelter postings, when it's been made quite clear that nothing of import is discussed in the Shelter. 'Transparency' of that nature does nothing to fix the attitudes at the top that drove us to this point. I wanna know what's going to be done to fix that.

When I was a grad student I foolishly thought student government was about getting things done. (It's about students learning how the process works. Anything substantive that they can fuck up is overridden by the faculty.) After that year and a half or so, the word "transparency" fills me with the same Fear and Loathing as "common-sense gun safety laws".

There is nothing that will change the fact that there are occasionally conversations among the Administration that the entire board isn't privy to. Every BBS on earth, including this one, is the same way.

But, they are exceptions and not the rule. Most days go by without any discussion at all..we just do the stuff that needs to be done and that is it. Most of my Admin PMs are to posters which are no one's business but mine and th eposter in question and O2C and/or Kyle begging for Tech help or complaining about a glitch somewhere.

The point being though, that transparency is not an end unto itself. Only part of the issue here was the staff withholding information. Far more important was the attitude behind the staff withholding information. What is going to be done to change that?

Information is witheld on an individual basis for varying reasons. It's never..."Oooh! We know and they don't!"

The most common reason is someone requests privacy or it involves details that are private information that we don't want to reveal inadvertantly.

Frankly, I am uncertain as to what you think is happening that your missing out on that needs to be shared. There hasn't been much of a need for an outlet since the RR has been opened to everyone being able to vent including staff. Anyone pissed usually just lets it hang out there now.

Here's the thing: The reason to have people with additional powers is to help run things smoothly and de-escalate conflict.

I could give two shits about "transparency". I just want moderators to fix typos, occasionally move a thread that should be in a different forum, maybe say "That's an interesting...opinion. What makes you say that?" and occasionally warn someone if a gentle nudge isn't working.

And I can understand the owner of the board being entitled to make decisions "because I said so", but if there are clear cases of favoritism--where one person gets a 32 hour time-out for a more serious offense than rates a permanent ban for someone else...well when that happens you've got problems.

But you're a smart girl. You figured that out on your own already. [And so did Tamar. :ramen:]
