Siddle Named Finalist For Two National Awards


Third-year UNCW head coach Takayo Siddle has been named a finalist for two national awards. Popular basketball website CollegeInsider.com named Siddle a finalist for the Ben Jobe Award and the Skip Prosser Man of the Year Award in college coaching. The recipients of the awards will be announced in March in Houston, site of the 2023 NCAA Men's Basketball Final Four.

NABC Honors White For Outstanding Season


Sophomore guard Trazarien White has earned postseason recognition from the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) following an outstanding men's basketball season at UNCW. The 6-6, 190-pound guard from Mansfield, Texas, was named Second-Team All-District 10 after leading the Seahawks in scoring (14.2) and rebounding (5.9) in 2022-23. He recently led 24-10 UNCW to its second consecutive championship game in the CAA Tournament.

Baseball Preview: at Stony Brook


The Seahawks carry a 13-8 record overall into the weekend and are tied for the conference lead with Elon at 5-1. The Seawolves, meanwhile, stand at 7-11 and 1-2 after dropping their opening conference series last weekend at the College of Charleston. This will be UNCW's first visit to the Stony Brook campus since the Seawolves joined the conference over the summer following a lengthy tenure in the America East Conference. The Seahawks own a 2-1 lead in the series with all games being played at Brooks Field. The last meeting was a 3-2 walk-off victory for the Seahawks on a Ryan LaGrange homer in 2013.

Sophomores Power UNCW to Twinbill Sweep


UNCW erupted for 15 runs and 17 hits, including an inside-the-park grand slam by Arial Pearce, to sweep a doubleheader over North Carolina A&T in Colonial Athletic Association softball action on Saturday afternoon at Boseman Field. The Seahawks (11-17, 5-3 CAA) run-ruled the Aggies (6-20, 1-4 CAA) 8-0 in five innings before using a seven-run fifth inning to earn a 7-3 victory in game two.

Seahawks Record Third Shutout of Season


The UNCW women's team earned a split of its weekend trip to Virginia with a 7-0 shutout of Colonial Athletic Association foe Towson early Sunday at William & Mary's McCormack-Nagelson Tennis Center. The Seahawks, who lost to the Tribe on Saturday, raised their record to 9-7 overall and 2-2 in the CAA with the neutral site win. The Tigers dropped their fifth straight match and plummeted to 4-12 and 1-7

Wainwright Receives Gene Bartow Award


Legendary UNCW head coach Jerry Wainwright has been recognized for his significant contributions to college basketball as recipient of the Gene Bartow Award by CollegeInsider.com. The Berwyn, Ill., native coached the Seahawks for eight seasons from 1995-2002 and guided the Colonial Athletic Association club to four postseason berths, including the school's first NCAA appearance in 2000 and another NCAA bid in 2002. Wainwright fashioned a 136-103 record in the Port City and remains one of the program's most revered head coaches. Wainwright's 2002 club is the only team in the program's history to win a game in the NCAA Tournament after upsetting Southern California, 93-89, in overtime on March 14, 2002, in Sacramento.

4x100 Relay Team Sets Record at Trojan Relays


The women's 4x100 relay unit set a school record on Saturday to highlight the UNCW track and field team's appearance in the Trojan Relays at Mount Olive's Ray McDonald, Sr., Sports Complex. The speedy quartet of Janiyah Fields, Brynn Sheffield, Nadiah Ferguson and Courtney Lines clocked a 45.67 in the women's 4x100 to eclipse the old record of 46.00 set in 2008.

Seahawks Capture Ninth CAA Men's Tennis Crown


No. 1 seed UNCW won the doubles point and added three singles victories to defeat No. 3 Elon, 4-1, in the championship match of the 2023 Colonial Athletic Association Men's Tennis Championship on Sunday at William & Mary's McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center. The Seahawks, 17-7, have won three consecutive conference championships and nine titles overall (2009, 2011, 2013, 2014, 2017, 2018, 2021, 2022, 2023). It marked the second straight year that UNCW has beaten Elon, 15-9, in the finals. UNCW earned the CAA's automatic berth to the NCAA Regionals. It will be the program's 10th appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The Seahawks, who will learn their postseason destination and opponent during the NCAA's special selection show on Monday night, competed in the Raleigh Regionals last May. The Seahawks have now won nine consecutive matches and 17 of their last 18 pairings in the conference tournament since 2017. UNCW stands 20-3 as the top seed in the event.

Sammys Showcase Top Student-Athletes


Track and field standouts Courtney Lines and Josh Parks were voted UNCW's outstanding student-athletes for the 2022-23 year and tennis stars Davide Innocenti and Zoe Hoffman collected top academic honors during The Sammys on Monday night at Trask Coliseum. The event, organized and conducted by Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) members, featured awards in various categories, including several individual and team awards. Nominations were solicited from the program's student-athletes, coaches and staff and voted on by the 350 student-athletes.

Seahawks Win Three Medals On First Day of CAA Meet


Courtney Lines successfully defending her crown in the women's long jump with a winning leap of 6.18m (20-3.5). She beat out Northeastern's Dominique Biron (6.04m) and Hampton's Maya Hanks (5.96m). Sophomore Ryan DeBarber placed third in the Men's Javelin with a throw of 62.87m and freshman Jesse Helton took third in the Men's Discus with a mark of 49.15m.

Two-time defending women's champion Elon sits atop the women's standings with 57 points, while William & Mary is close behind with 50 points. Northeastern is third with 36 points, followed by Delaware (26.5), UNCW (16.5), Hampton (11), Towson (10), Charleston (10), Monmouth (9), Hofstra (6) and Stony Brook (2).

Monmouth, making its first CAA Championship debut, leads the men's competition with 88 points, while seven-time defending champion Northeastern stands second with 61.5 points. North Carolina A&T is third with 32 points, followed by William & Mary (30.5), Hampton (26), UNCW (19), Stony Brook (10) and Hofstra (6).
