USFL files trademark application for Dallas Stallions

USFL filed trademark applications for 12 terms last week. All but two were the names of teams that operated in the original USFL 40 years age one of the exceptions: Dallas Stallions. The USFL, former or current, has never had a team with a Dallas moniker. But the USFL does have a team called the Birmingham Stallions that is playing in its second season in the revived USFL after also playing in all three of the original league’s seasons. On Tuesday, the USFL filed trademark applications with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for the terms Austin Wranglers, Baltimore Stars, Boston Breakers, Dallas Stallions, Denver Gold, Gold, Gunslingers, Los Angeles Express, Oklahoma Outlaws, Portland Breakers, San Antonio Gunslingers and Wranglers. The current USFL based its team names and colors on the original USFL, which operated from 1983 through 1985 as a spring football league.

How old is the USFL? Exploring the history of the league and past edition winners

The United States Football League (USFL) is one year old, as it began operations precisely a year ago today, on April 16, 2022. The league is a professional American football enterprise, operating eight teams in four cities. It is important to note that the current USFL is not affiliated with the 1980s American football league of the same name. On June 3, 2021, organizers announced that the United States Football League would be created and begin its inaugural season in April 2022. Fox TV was announced as a minority owner in the league.

Steelers Looking at XFL, USFL to Top Off Roster

The Pittsburgh Steelers have already agreed to terms with one XFL player in wide receiver Hakeem Butler. Now, they'll look at others from the spring leagues, including the USFL, to round out their 90-man summer roster. Head coach Mike Tomlin spoke after rookie minicamp and addressed the next round of additions to the Steelers' summer roster. With free agency being limited and the draft behind them, Pittsburgh is turning their attention to the spring league games, looking for players who stand out on the film. "We just utilize all the ball at our disposal in an effort to acquire talent," Tomlin said. "And we respect what those Leagues are trying to get done in terms of exposing and preparing guys and developing them. And so, we just want to do our part in the ecosystem, if you will." For XFL players coming to the league, they aren't able to participate until late May.
