I have to go get a new computer. The keys are getting worn out on the 13 year old laptop, at least one of the USB ports is unreliable, there's no support for any browsers for it anymore, and last night the speaker died. Everything indicates that I have sound but it just crapped out mid YouTube video. Got it back for a bit and then it died for good. I suspect an electrical connection went. Decided it might be smart to run a backup, which is when I realized the bad USB port. Once I got the backup drive connected I realized my last backup was close to a year and a half ago. So now I *hope* it is backing up files--although I don't see a status they way I usually do. :/

Unsure if you can open the case and remove the drive, or if the drive is fully working since everything else seems to be borked, but if you can remove the drive just grab one of these or similar and you can mount the drive like a flash drive to your new laptop and transfer files over that way. Assuming the new computer has conventional USB-A ports. So complicated these days. Anywho, hands down one of the most useful tools in my utility belt.
 
I got the speaker working again. I think I've got about 3 different backup solutions loaded on this machine. One took less than an hour to copy files. The other did a full backup that ran for over 9 hours. Stayed off the machine as much as possible--and didn't fuck with it--while the backup was running. Realized I had some earbud headphones in the desk drawer and found that the headphone jack was working. But I don't really like earbuds so I rummaged my junk drawers for my old W2K desktop (that I built myself)'s speakers. Turns out a laptop headphone jack doesn't push enough power to operate detachable speakers so back to the earbuds I went. But after the backup completed I dug out some canned air and blew in assorted orifices, which did the trick and the speaker is working again. Still should get a new machine because you want to transition while everything is working instead of trying to do recovery.
 
I don't want to work anymore. But if I must work, I want to work in an office, in a cubicle. And I want a strobe light in my cubicle and a He-Man sword hanging on the wall. Then, whenever comes to me and needs anything, I'll flip on the strobe light, stand up, and hold up the sword, yelling "BY THE POWER OF GRAYSKULL! I HAVE THE POWER!" before I will help anyone.
