I think the Brits love their monarchy -- all that pomp and circumstance. Those awful hats and ridiculous handbags, matching coats and sensible shoes. It's good for the tourist trade and it does make all other European royal houses look like wannabes. Every time there's a wedding or funeral - who else but the Brits can do it up with such glamour and ribbons? They have a gaudy coach for all occasions. And we all love to watch as the coaches make a stately drive by.
Heck, I cried my eyes out when they held the funeral for Princess Diana. They put that together in a short time, and it was everything a royal funeral should be. Nothing made you feel so wretched, yet attained closure like that funeral. And, the peeps made the Queen feel it necessary to make a statement and stand outside the palace as her cortege rolled by.
And the weddings! Everything but the kitchen sink. Every bridezilla wishes her wedding could be as grand and over the top. I wish every bridezilla could pick out a wedding dress that had as much class as Kate's - then you have her sister's revealing dress. No pantie lines for her!
Yes, William and Kate need an heir and a spare and then they can retreat to sunny beaches for more tantalizing nekid pictures that everyone's afraid to post, but they talk about them and give more print space about the royals. Let's see what happens if the first born is a girl!! Will she become the next in line for the throne? At this rate, the line is getting longer and longer while we wait for the Queen to finish out her reign.
I think the Windsors will be around for a very long time. They are good for business and fill a unique position for the Brits.
