Billionaire Julia Koch buys stake in NBA's Nets, WNBA's Liberty

New York billionaire Julia Koch and her children are purchasing a minority stake in BSE Global, which owns the Brooklyn Nets of the NBA, the New York Liberty of the WNBA and Barclays Center in Brooklyn. BSE Global announced the pending transaction but did not disclose financial terms. The NBA board of governors must approve the deal. Sportico reported the Kochs will buy 15% of BSE Global, adding that the value assigned to the company's sports holdings was $6 billion. Under that scenario, the Kochs would pay $900 million for their share. Forbes ranks Julia Koch as the 23rd-richest person in the world, with a net worth of $65.7 billion. She and her children inherited 42% of Koch Industries -- one of the largest privately held companies in the nation -- upon the death of her husband, David, in 2019.

Aces becomes first WNBA team to sell out every home game
Las Vegas in March also became the first team ever to sell out its allotment of season tickets, leaving only individual game tickets available. The Aces led the WNBA in attendance last season when they averaged 9,551 fans. They are averaging 10,379 this season, fourth in the league through Wednesday's games.[//size]

**********
Their rise in attendance comes at a time the league is receiving attention like never before it in its 28-year history. Much of that is because of a strong rookie class that includes Clark and Reese. The overall league attendance average is 9,195, which is on pace for the highest in 22 years.

Lynx surge past Liberty to win first Commissioner's Cup title
The Lynx -- whose dynasty years ran from 2011 to 2017, when they won four titles and went to two other Finals -- are ready to be back in the conversation about WNBA championships. The way they played Tuesday proved that, as has their 13-3 start this season.

The Commissioner's Cup, an in-season competition started in 2021, has grown in prestige among the players, who compete for a $500,000 prize pool.

Catlin Clark wins 2nd Honda Cup as top women's NCAA athlete
The former Iowa star, who finished her career as the all-time Division I scoring leader, joined Moore (2010, 2011), Tracy Caulkins (1982, 1984) and Rachel Garcia (2019, 2021) as the only people to accomplish that.

**********
The Honda Cup honors the nation's top NCAA women's athletes for not only what they do athletically, but also their leadership, academic excellence and eagerness to participate in community service.

WNBA All-Star 2024: Snubs, top questions after roster named

Standout rookies Catlin Clark and Angel Reese are headed to Phoenix -- as teammates. That's a big takeaway from Tuesday's 2024 WNBA All-Star roster announcement. Clark, the Indiana Fever guard who was April's No. 1 draft pick, and Reese, the Chicago Sky forward who has a WNBA-record 11 straight double-doubles -- will represent Team WNBA when it faces Team USA in the league's All-Star Game in Phoenix on July 20 (8:30 p.m. ET, ABC). Clark and Reese, both vying for rookie of the year, have brought a lot of energy to their teams and the WNBA, but have been somewhat reluctant adversaries since the 2023 NCAA final. Both downplay the other as a big rival, but their fan bases have done an endless amount of talking about them. Now, they will be on the same side, which has "breaking the Internet" potential on gameday. When Team WNBA faced Team USA in the 2021 All-Star Game before the Tokyo Olympics, the WNBA stars beat the Olympians 93-85, led by MVP Arike Ogunbowale. The Dallas Wings guard is back for Team WNBA this year, too.

Mercury to name practice courts after star Diana Taurasi

The Phoenix Mercury's new practice facility will have its two courts dedicated to franchise superstar Diana Taurasi, the team said Friday, and will have its grand opening next Thursday to kick off WNBA All-Star weekend. The U.S. Olympic 5-on-5 team will face Team WNBA in the All-Star Game at Footprint Center on July 20 (8:30 p.m. ET, ABC). The All-Star Skills Challenge and the 3-point Shooting Contest also will be at Footprint Center on July 19 (9 p.m. ET, ESPN). Mat Ishbia officially became owner of the Suns and Mercury in 2023 and said it was a priority to him to get the WNBA team its own practice facility. Having its grand opening coincide with the All-Star Game is part of the celebration of the Mercury, one of the original WNBA franchises dating back to 1997. Taurasi, the No. 1 draft pick out of UConn in 2004, has led the Mercury to three WNBA titles and is playing in her 20th season in the league, all with Phoenix. She is also on the U.S. Olympic team for the sixth time, having won five previous gold medals.

Catlin Clark talks team USA hopes; Cheryl Reeve dismisses Olympic question
Clark not only helped her squad stay in the WNBA playoff race with a strong finish in the Indiana Fever's 81-74 victory at Minnesota on Sunday, but did so against a Lynx team coached by the leader of the U.S. women's national team, Cheryl Reeve.

**********
