WWE's Vince McMahon announces full retirement amid misconduct investigations

After spending the last four decades as both the most consistent public face of WWE wrestling, and one of its primary behind-the-scenes architects, Vince McMahon has announced that he’s fully retiring from the company this week. Per Variey, news of the retirement comes not long after McMahon vacated his position as chairman of the company, amid investigations into wide-ranging allegations that he paid millions of dollars to women in order to hide alleged sexual misconduct. He’d previously stayed on in a creative role at WWE, but is now departing in full. The allegations against McMahon (and also into John Laurinaitis, former wrestler and head of talent relations) are currently being investigated by the WWE board. They apparently amount to something on the order of $12 million handed out to women over many years, tied to NDAs that are reportedly connected to sexual relationships with employees, sexual harassment, and other sexual misconduct. These allegations appear to be separate from one levied against McMahon in 1996 by former WWE referee Rita Chatterton, who said that McMahon sexually assaulted her in 1986.

Vince McMahon Retires From WWE

Vince McMahon -- the longtime chairman and CEO of World Wrestling Entertainment -- is retiring from his role with the company, he announced Friday. "As I approach 77 years old, I feel it's time for me to retire as Chairman and CEO of WWE," McMahon said in a statement. "Throughout the years, it's been a privilege to help WWE bring you joy, inspire you, thrill you, surprise you, and always entertain you." "I would like to thank my family for mightily contributing to our success, and I would also like to thank all of our past and present Superstars and employees for their dedication and passion for our brand." Vince bought the company from his father, Vincent J. McMahon in 1982 ... and has been the face of the brand ever since. Vince was responsible for the "Attitude Era" in the 1990s, which turned professional wrestling into a mainstream phenomenon ... and helped Superstars like The Undertaker, Kane, The Rock, Stone Cold Steve Austin, Triple H, China and more become household names.

WHAT WILL WWE LOOK LIKE WITHOUT VINCE MCMAHON?

Stephanie became interim-chair/CEO last month after her father stepped down from the role during an investigation by the Board of Directors into alleged misconduct involving former female WWE employees.Vince retiring will change WWE in many ways. Some will be big. Some will be small. Some will take form on TV. Some won’t. At the end of the day, though, changes are coming.
With NXT, Levesque ushered in a new era of WWE, and his work in doing so can still be felt on Raw and SmackDown each week. WWE stars such as Seth Rollins, Becky Lynch, Charlotte Flair, Asuka, Bayley, Finn Balor, Kevin Owens, Sami Zayn, Bianca Belair, The Street Profits, Riddle, Theory and more all started in NXT due to "The Game." Levesque’s booking also helped NXT TakeOver events sometimes become the most-talked about shows during pay-per-view weekends, even against main roster events, and he has a deep respect for the business as a whole.

WWE Discloses Investigation Over Vince McMahon’s $14.6 Million Alleged Hush Money Payments

Following Vince McMahon is retirement announcement last week, the WWE will revise financial statements dating back to 2019. According to the organization, almost $15 million of payments made by McMahon should’ve been recorded as expenses. In an SEC filing this week, the company noted that it “has made a preliminary determination that certain payments that Vince McMahon agreed to make during the period from 2006 through 2022 (including amounts paid and payable in the future), and that were not recorded in the WWE consolidated financial statements, should have been recorded as expenses in the quarters in which those agreements were made.” According to the WWE, the aggregate amount of the payments during this period totals $14.6 million, and all payments were or will be paid by McMahon personally.

Jade Cargill hopes to inspire a future generation of Black female wrestlers

In front of a packed crowd on AEW Dynamite, Jade Cargill, rocking her white hair in glossy black gear, was preparing to fly like her favorite X-Men superhero, Storm. After weeks of competing in a fierce, 12-woman tournament for the 10 pounds of gold, she was just minutes away from winning it all. While throwing hands with Ruby Soho, Cargill stood on the top rope to set up her signature move, “Jaded.” Not only was this her first time attempting the move off a top rope, but it was also something she’s expressed fear of trying on a 2020 All Elite Wrestling podcast episode. Despite that, Cargill landed it and went in for the three-count to become the inaugural AEW TBS women's champion. Cargill’s journey stems from her lifelong love for wrestling merged with her athletic background. She grew up in Gifford, Florida, where she would do everything from wrestling with her brother Shawn in the front yard to catching lizards and occasionally jumping off rooftops.

"The Nature Boy" will make the walk one final time. Ric Flair, one of the most well-known and revered professional wrestlers in history, will perform in one last match July 31, sources told ESPN on Monday. Flair, 73, will step into the ring at the Nashville Fairgrounds on an independent card that will stream live on FITE TV. Flair, a two-time WWE Hall of Famer and 16-time world champion, has not wrestled in a match since Sept. 12, 2011, a bout for Impact Wrestling against longtime rival Sting. His last WWE match was in 2008 at WrestleMania XXIV against Shawn Michaels. Flair's opponent for July 31 remains unclear. It's also unknown whether it will be a singles or tag team match. Flair, known for his "Woo!" catchphrase and famous strut, has been posting videos on social media of him training with current AEW wrestler Jay Lethal. The legendary wrestler asked for his release from WWE in 2021 and received it. Flair was most known for his work in the NWA and WCW, which was WWE's biggest rival in the 1980s and 1990s. But he also performed in WWE for parts of two decades, as a wrestler and on-screen manager.

One final 'Woooo!': Why Ric Flair, 73, will step into the ring one last time

Ric Flair stepped between the ropes and into the ring at The Wrestling Lab three weeks ago. The pro-wrestling legend had been doing private workouts with his trainer, Jay Lethal, for several months. Flair was five years removed from being on life support for two weeks and intensive care for a month, the result of several devastating health issues. He told ESPN he was given about a 15% chance to survive. A year after that, he underwent four heart surgeries and had a pacemaker installed. Flair is one of the greatest wrestlers in the history of the profession, a man whose fame has transcended the business from the 1970s to today, when he is still featured in the music videos of hip-hop artists. He is a former 16-time world champion and two-time WWE Hall of Famer.

FORMER WWE OFFICIAL QUESTIONS WHETHER VINCE MCMAHON IS ACTUALLY RETIRED

The news of Vince McMahon's retirement came after it was reported that there were investigations into millions of dollars in hush money payments made by Vince to female employees. The payments were reportedly made in order to silence the women from making accusations about harassment, abuse, and misconduct against Vince McMahon and former Head of Talent Relations John Laurinaitis. Some have suggested that the former Chairman would still be running the WWE from behind the scenes, but according to several sources, that isn't the case. Although the on-screen WWE product seems to be changing, one person who still believes Vince has a say in what's going on is former WWE referee Mike Chioda.
