The Iron Sheik, pro wrestling legend and Hall of Famer, dies at 81

The Iron Sheik, a standout Greco-Roman wrestler from Iran who gained global fame in professional wrestling with his 1980s rivalries against the likes of Hulk Hogan, died Wednesday at the age of 81, according to his official Twitter account. Sheik, whose real name was Hossein Khosrow Ali Vaziri, was a former WWF World Heavyweight champion and was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2005. As a hated heel, he had legendary battles in the 1980s against Hogan, Bob Backlund and Sgt. Slaughter. Vaziri beat Backlund for the WWF title in December 1983, and, one month later, Hogan defeated Vaziri in front of more than 20,000 at New York's Madison Square Garden to win the belt for the first time. The match helped catapult Hulkamania into a phenomenon, leading into the first WrestleMania one year later.

Around that time, he broke into professional wrestling in Minnesota with AWA promoter Verne Gagne under coach and catch wrestling legend Billy Robinson. Vaziri was given a character based on his Iranian heritage (inspired by the outset of the Iranian Revolution) and he leaned into it, shaving his head, growing a handlebar mustache and wearing shoes curled at the toes, which went on to be an iconic look. He joined the WWF for the first time in 1979, winning Madison Square Garden's first battle royal match and having matches with the likes of Bruno Sammartino and Chief Jay Strongbow.

WWE Money in The Bank: Reign's finally loses, Preist amd Sky claim briefcases
For Reigns, it was the first loss of his career since 2020, but since no titles were on the line in "The Bloodline Civil War," Reigns remains the undisputed WWE champion. In the Money in the Bank matches, Damian Priest and Iyo Sky outlasted their opponents to earn their respective briefcases. Now the biggest question will be, when will they cash the cases in?

The five wildest WWe SummerSlam moments
When it comes to the most iconic moments in WWE history, thoughts and opinions often circle back toward WrestleMania, and rightfully so, for its scale and impact. It was, in fact, a challenge to narrow it down to just five crazy moments related to SummerSlam, but we think we've put together a strong selection.

No.5 1998: The Insane Clown Posse sings The Oddities to the ring at MSG

icp.jpg

It might be a little hard to believe 20 years later, but for a short stretch of time in 1998, The Oddities were one of the most positively received acts in the WWE, thanks to two major elements working in their favor. First and foremost was their entrance theme sung by the Insane Clown Posse, which had a hook and a beat that fans took to immediately. Secondly, one of the four members of the group, Golga (aka the late John Tenta) took to wearing T-shirts and carrying dolls depicting South Park's Eric Cartman at a time during which South Park was starting to catch fire.

1991: Ultimate Warrior holds Vince MaMahon up for money

warrior.jpg

There was a time in WWE when it seemed as though the Ultimate Warrior would be the one to succeed Hulk Hogan as the promotion's centerpiece. He was positioned as the next man up in the late '80s and early '90s, culminating in a champion-versus-champion match at WrestleMania VI in which he pinned Hogan. His colorful look and wild energy excited crowds every time he ran to the ring, but from the moment Warrior lost the WWE title to Sgt. Slaughter in 1991, the wheels started to come off in his relationship with Vince McMahon and the WWE.

WWE SummerSlam 2023: Jimmy Uso betrays his brother Jey; Roman Reigns retains

Jey Uso was ready to take it all -- the titles, the role of "Tribal Chief" and most certainly the responsibility. Unfortunately, his brother Jimmy wasn't having it. In a gripping finale in Detroit, Roman Reigns retained his WWE Universal Championship and the status of Tribal Chief on Saturday night, as it took the help of Jimmy Uso and Solo Sikoa for him to escape with all of his assets. "Main Event" Jey was up to the task at SummerSlam, as his battle with Reigns in "Tribal Combat" delivered in almost every way possible -- unless you wanted to see a new champion.
