UFC, WWE officially combine under TKO umbrella

The UFC and WWE are now officially under one roof. Endeavor, the UFC's parent company, and WWE announced Tuesday the closing of its merger and the launch of TKO, a company that will combine the forces of the two global-powerhouse live-event and sports promoters. TKO began trading on the New York Stock Exchange on Tuesday morning. Former WWE controlling shareholder and chairman Vince McMahon will act as executive chairman of TKO, with Nick Khan, who also sits on the board, as WWE president. Dana White, the former UFC president, will now have the title of UFC CEO. Endeavor's Ari Emanuel will be CEO of TKO, and Endeavor's Mark Shapiro is the president and chief operating officer of the new company The merger was first announced in April. WWE had been seeking a merger and Khan told ESPN he believes McMahon really started thinking about Endeavor as a partner when McMahon, Khan, McMahon's daughter Stephanie and WWE chief content officer Paul "Triple H" Levesque attended UFC 276 in July 2022 in Las Vegas. Khan said McMahon saw similarities between the UFC and WWE and how they grew.

Everything we do (and don't) know about the UFC-WWE merger

Two of the biggest live event and broadcast promoters in the combat space, the UFC and WWE, have officially merged into one company, TKO. Endeavor, the UFC's parent company, announced in April that it would be acquiring WWE's pro-wrestling brand and that the UFC's MMA company will be combined into one publicly traded company. The deal values the UFC at $12.1 billion and WWE at $9.3 billion, making the valuation of the new entity $21.4 billion. It is now one of the biggest players in all of sports and entertainment. Endeavor owns 51 percent of the new company, while current WWE shareholders own 49 percent. Longtime WWE promoter Vince McMahon will stay on as the new company's executive chairman. Dana White, the former UFC president, will now have the title of UFC CEO, and Nick Khan will serve as president of WWE. Endeavor's Ari Emanuel will be CEO of TKO and Endeavor's Mark Shapiro is the president and chief operating officer of the new company. Many questions remain unanswered about TKO, but the impact of the UFC and WWE combining forces could be massive. Our ESPN combat sports insiders Mike Coppinger and Marc Raimondi take a look here at what all of this could mean now and in the future.

WWE roster cuts: Matt Riddle, Dolph Ziggler among more than 20 superstars released after new TV deal announced

The WWE roster is thinning out following a new television rights announcement in the aftermath of a major merger. Matt Riddle, Dolph Ziggler, Shelton Benjamin and Mustafa Ali are among the WWE superstars that have been released following the company's announcement of a TV deal for SmackDown, according to multiple reports. Riddle, a one-time UFC fighter who won multiple titles in WWE, announced his release Friday: "Just wanted to inform everyone that I'm no longer with WWE. Thank you for the memories and opportunities also thank you to all the fans for the support and love you give me every time I go out to the ring. See you all soon." A five-year stint with WWE began in NXT where Riddle became a fast-rising star who earned promotion to the main roster. His greatest success came teaming with Randy Orton as RK-Bro, an odd couple babyface tag team that twice won the Raw tag team championship. Riddle also held the United States title and NXT tag team championship (with Pete Dunne). However, multiple behavioral issues -- including a recent public outburst at a New York airport -- made him a liability for WWE. Mustafa Ali, Emma, Madcap Moss and former WWE women's tag team champion Aliyah were among superstars who publicly confirmed their releases on social media.

I won a WWE title by accident at WrestleMania and Brock Lesnar broke my neck – Vince McMahon also gifted me a race car

The now 60-year-old Hardcore Holly, real name Robert William Howard, was a WWE icon in the late 90s and early 00s and one of the most-recognisable faces of the Attitude Era. But before he became a champion as Hardcore Holly, he actually debuted in the company with a very different gimmick. In 1994 he played the character of a NASCAR driver turned wrestler called Thurman ‘Sparky’ Plugg, which was later changed to Bob ‘Spark Plug’ Holly. As part of that, he even started driving a WWE -sponsored super model motor in the All Pro Series 1995 as owner McMahon attempted to cross-promote the two ventures. But the venture did not last long and WWE soon withdrew its sponsorship. He even managed to win a WWE Title on the Grandest Stage of All at WrestleMania 2000 - although it was completely unscripted.

Triple H invites Joel Embiid to WrestleMania 40

Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid received an invitation to WrestleMania 40 from Triple H himself -- but only after picking up a hefty fine. The reigning MVP made what the league deemed as "obscene gestures" during the 76ers' 126-98 victory against the Portland Trail Blazers on Sunday. As a result, he was fined $35,000 for making four crude chops that were inspired by the "Suck It" celebration from the iconic WWE group D-Generation X. The incident took place in the second quarter after Embiid cashed in on a full-court pass with a layup. He finished the game with 35 points, 15 rebounds, 7 assists and 6 blocks.

WrestleMania 40, the WWE's biggest event of the year, will take place during the first weekend of April at Lincoln Financial Field, the home of the Philadelphia Eagles. Unfortunately, the Sixers are scheduled for road games on consecutive nights against the Memphis Grizzlies and San Antonio Spurs during that same weekend, so Embiid is unlikely to be in attendance. Triple H has been a part of the Sixers pregame festivities with Embiid in the past.
