Wrestler CM Punk's return helps WWE crush social media record

WWE crushed its social media record over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, with the return of wrestler CM Punk at Survivor Series garnering more than 71 million views across all of the sports entertainment company's platforms. Survivor Series, a premium live event that's been held for 37 years, took place at the Allstate Arena in Chicago on Saturday. While WWE's fervent fans had been talking about the possibility of CM Punk returning to the organization for weeks, his appearance at the WWE event after nearly a decade away from the company surprised nearly everyone, and many took to social media to talk about it. WWE said Tuesday that the comeback moment has more than 71 million views across all platforms, making it the biggest social post in company history. The previous record was a handheld video last year from Logan Paul as he jumped from the ropes during a match. That video garnered more than 40 million views across Paul's and WWE's social platforms in less than 24 hours.

Former wrestler Tammy Sytch sentenced to 17 years in DUI crash

Former pro wrestler Tammy "Sunny" Sytch has been sentenced to more than 17 years in prison for drunkenly colliding with another car, killing a 75-year-old man, while her blood alcohol level was four times the legal limit, authorities in Florida said. Sytch, who was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2011, pleaded no contest in August to driving under the influence manslaughter and other charges. She also had an unsealed bottle of vodka in her vehicle and cannabis in her system at the time of her arrest in Volusia County in March 2022, authorities said. She had faced up to more than 25 years in prison during her sentencing hearing Monday. During the hearing, Sytch said she felt remorse and regret "deep in my soul" for killing Julian LaFrancis Lasseter of Daytona Beach.

Pro Wrestling 2023 awards: The best male and female wrestler, feud, faction, promo and more

There was plenty to be appreciative of in the pro wrestling world in 2023. Dream matches materialized. New champions were crowned. Superstars switched promotions. What more could a wrestling fan want? 2024 looks to be more dramatic than ever. Stars such as CM Punk, Jade Cargill and Adam Copeland will continue to make waves in their new homes. WrestleMania 40 looks poised to crystallize long-running storylines. Ric Flair, Sting and Billy Gunn continue to defy Father Time with their presence inside the squared circle.

Female wrestler of the year: Rhea Ripley, WWE

There's dominance, and then there's Rhea Ripley. As the women's division's resident final boss, Ripley elevated her game to heights seen by few competitors inside the squared circle. She kicked off her year by going wire-to-wire to win the women's Royal Rumble, then she reached her greatest achievement: taking the WWE SmackDown women's championship (now WWE women's world title) from Charlotte Flair at WrestleMania in what was easily considered one of the best matches of 2023.

Male wrestler of the year: Cody Rhodes, WWE

"So ... what do you guys wanna talk about? Let's talk about how Rhodes began the year by coming off injured reserve, having torn his pectoral muscle off the bone and famously wrestling through the injury against Seth Rollins despite gnarly discolored skin. He declared for the Royal Rumble in January, entered as No. 30 and together with Gunther -- who entered first overall -- put on one of the best "final two" showdowns in the event's history.

Tag Team of the year: FTR, AEW
This was a difficult award to choose in 2023. It seemed like tag team wrestling was somewhat deemphasized in the big promotions, even in AEW which has boasted one of the highest-level tag team divisions seen in modern history. There were some bright spots, like the Usos vs. Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens headlining the first night of WrestleMania. But even those two stellar teams were muted in the back half of the year.

Debut of the year: CM Punk, WWE
The WarGames had ended. Cody Rhodes, Jey Uso, Sami Zayn, Seth Rollins and Randy Orton had thwarted The Judgement Day at Allstate Arena outside of Chicago. Fans had been treated to a huge return to the ring by Orton, who got all his spots in and nary a bump against his opponents. The good guys posed and saluted the crowd as music played. On the broadcast, the cameras were zooming out while promotions for upcoming shows were read. Suddenly, CM Punk's logo was plastered around the building's screens as "Cult of Personality" played. He strode out wearing a white T-shirt in between the WarGames cages. The fans went nuclear. The internet lit up. CM Punk was back in the WWE.

Match of the year: Kenny Omega vs. Will Ospreay, AEW (Forbidden Door and Wrestle Kingom)
This one was a tie and an unprecedented one, at that. Omega and Ospreay had two unbelievable matches in 2023 and each one received the most number of votes for this award. And that seems fitting. It was hard to choose which match was better. The first happened way back on Jan. 4 at Wrestle Kingdom in the Tokyo Dome. It was a symphony of violence, more visceral than any other match the two have had before. Omega and Ospreay are superlative athletes and a bout of pure finesse and physical marvels was within their reach. There was some of that in the first match, but it was mostly a bloody war of attrition. Omega gave Ospreay everything he could handle physically, it seemed, including some very perilous-looking bumps on Ospreay's neck.

Best PPV event of the year: Wrestlemania 39, WWE
This is arguably the hardest award to crown, because the work that AEW, New Japan and Impact perform -- among other top promotions -- is top-notch. Yet, the gold standard is WrestleMania for a reason, so much so that other wrestling promotions cater their programming to revolve around (via the schedule) and near (via proximity) the prestigious event.

Best storyline of the year: The Bloodline 2.0, WWE
Fans are frustrated by the lack of Roman Reigns on WWE programming in the latter part of the year and the Bloodline storyline being in something of a holding pattern. Boy, are wrestling fans fickle. It was just a few months ago when people were touting the Bloodline as one of the greatest storylines in the history of pro wrestling. All those people were right, of course. Over the first few months of the year, the Bloodline was on fire with Sami Zayn turning on Reigns and Cody emerging as a foil for Reigns, the Usos, Solo Sikoa and "The Wiseman" Paul Heyman. Heck, the Bloodline owned WrestleMania. The Usos vs. Zayn and Kevin Owens headlined the first night and Reigns vs. Rhodes headlined the second.

Here's a look at the upcoming AEW schedule, as we update with more dates throughout the year.

From fired to face of WWE: Inside LA Knight's second-act star turn

Shawn Michaels is surrounded by talent as he walks the halls at the NXT Performance Center in Florida. Arguably the greatest wrestler of all time, Michaels reached the pinnacle of sports entertainment in the 1990s with his blend of charisma, next-level storytelling and unmatched in-ring work. Those working out in Florida at the WWE's developmental brand are typically newer to the wrestling scene. Looking for their big break, they're taking classes, honin

But in March 2021, the man that caught Michaels' eye wasn't a rookie. Far from it, in fact. A 38-year-old Shaun Ricker was in his second stint with NXT, still looking for his breakthrough moment. Ricker, who goes by LA Knight, had the same goals as his younger counterparts. He wanted to get the call-up to the main roster to perform on Raw and Smackdown, the flagship shows of WWE.

Now 41, Knight seems destined to be featured at WrestleMania 40. Saturday's Royal Rumble event in St. Petersburg, Florida, is the unofficial start of the Road to WrestleMania. And it's where Knight will wrestle on arguably his biggest stage yet, a Fatal Four-Way for Roman Reigns' WWE undisputed Universal championship. Randy Orton and AJ Styles, aged 43 and 46, will also compete for the company's top prize in that match. It has been an 11-year winding journey for the self-proclaimed "megastar" that included Knight being released during his first tenure with NXT in 2014 and issues with leadership along the way. But how did it all go sideways in the first place?

wrestlerank 2024: ranking the best wrestlers from 60 to 1
Expectations are solely for 2024 and are meant to predict potential excellence rather than past performance and career body of work. Injuries and potential to switch promotions. Few things spark a bigger debate than ranking the greatest wrestlers of all time: Sammartino or Inoki? Rhodes or Flair? Hogan or Savage? Stone Cold or The Rock? Cena or Punk?

Top-5
No.5: Jey Oso, WWE

The YEET movement rolls into 2024 as Uso looks ready for even bigger and better things. Few wrestlers across the globe have more potential dream matches that could land than Uso. Jey vs. Roman. Jey vs. Jimmy. Jey vs. The Rock?
No.4: Seth Rollins, WWE
Rollins has been a reliable performer for WWE who is exceptionally over with the fans and delivers high-quality matches weekly. The creation of the world heavyweight championship has aided Rollins just as much as he's legitimized the new title. Rollins has established himself, year after year, as one of the top stars in all of pro wrestling, between his over-the-top outfits, confidence on the mic and his high-flying style.
No.3: MJF, AEW
In a year of ups and downs in AEW, MJF was a stalwart -- the consistent figure at the top of the cards, holding the AEW world championship belt. He went from hated heel to engaging, yet extremely flawed babyface during a reign that lasted until Dec. 30, compiling incredible in-ring performances and memorable promos along the way. MJF's rivals-to-friends-to-rivals storyline with Adam Cole was the best AEW had in 2023. Few wrestlers can combine MJF's work between the ropes and his abilities on the microphone.
No.2: Cody Rhodes, WWE
Rhodes spent most of 2023 as the biggest babyface in wrestling and telling a near-impossible story in the process. He went from a heroic Royal Rumble winner on his way to ending Roman Reigns' championship run at WrestleMania to a star recovering from being unable to accomplish that goal. Losses like the one Rhodes faced at Mania can derail careers. But Rhodes was undeterred, using the past year as a redemption story and a chance to develop a bigger connection with the fans.

No.1: Roman Reigns, WWE
He might not call himself the Big Dog anymore, but when it comes to professional wrestling, there is no one bigger right now than Reigns, the Undisputed WWE universal champion, and that doesn't figure to change in 2024. He's the top guy on the marquee for WWE, a legitimate draw when it comes to television ratings and ticket sales. Reigns is the latest in a long line of promotion-carrying WWE stars -- even if he doesn't wrestle as much as some fans would like at this juncture -- and the face of the best storyline WWE has done in years, The Bloodline.

Janel Grant, a former employee at WWE’s headquarters, said in a lawsuit filed Thursday that she was abused and sexually exploited by McMahon while he was chief executive. She alleged that McMahon lured her with promises of career advancement, and then he allegedly exploited her and trafficked her to other men inside the company.

vince mcmahon resigns from tkoday afer ex-employee's lawsuit
McMahon, 78, leaves the publicly traded company -- which was formed when UFC merged with WWE last year -- following a lawsuit filed Thursday that accuses him of sexual misconduct. The 67-page lawsuit also implicated a "former UFC heavyweight champion with whom WWE was actively trying to sign to a new contract."

'the rock' to ufc wwe's tko groupboard of directors
"The Rock" is going to need some new custom business suits for his well-muscled 6-foot-5 frame. Dwayne Johnson, the actor, former WWE star and most followed American man on social media platforms in the world, was appointed Tuesday to the board of directors of TKO Group, the publicly traded company consisting of the UFC and WWE. Johnson is one of the most well-known wrestlers to ever come out of WWE, winning the promotion's championship eight times.

2024 WWE Royal Rumble results, recap, grades: Cody Rhodes eliminates CM Punk last, Bayley wins first Rumble

Cody Rhodes can still finish his story at WrestleMania 40. Rhodes tossed CM Punk out of the men's Royal Rumble on Saturday to become only the fourth superstar to win the match in back-to-back years. Bayley boosted her legacy by winning her first Rumble match. Rhodes and Punk were the leading candidates to punch their tickets to WrestleMania. They were the final two superstars vying for the opportunity on Saturday night. Ultimately, Rhodes cemented his place at the showcase of the immortals and is expected to challenge Roman Reigns for the undisputed WWE universal championship in April. Bayley shined in a match that felt more open-ended than its male counterpart. There were also several guest appearances, some more heavily rumored than others. The card also saw Roman Reigns take on three superstars to defend his undisputed universal title with Randy Orton, LA Knight and AJ Styles all vying for the crown. They were unable to do so thanks in part to help from the Bloodline. Another champion retained his title thanks to some outside help as Logan Paul held on to the United States title when Kevin Owens was disqualified for using brass knuckles.
