Texas A&M hires Dukes Mike Elko to replace Jim Fisher
Elko is a former Texas A&M defensive coordinator who left there two years ago to take the Duke head-coaching job. He was the coordinator for some of Texas A&M's best recent seasons, including the 9-1 campaign in 2020 that culminated with an Orange Bowl victory. Since Elko's departure after the 2021 season, Texas A&M's performance has dipped. The Aggies went 12-12 the past two seasons.

The Buckeyes were ranked No. 1 in the first CFP rankings Oct. 31. Georgia remained No. 1, while Michigan moved up one spot to No. 2 and Washington is now at No. 3. Florida State moved back into the top 4. Oregon is No. 5

NC State QB MJ Morris entering transfer portal
Morris began the season as the Wolfpack's backup quarterback with plans to redshirt. But with starter Brennan Armstrong struggling, coach Dave Doeren made the decision to go with Morris in Week 6 to provide the team a spark.

Duke quarterback Riley Leonard enters transfer portal
Leonard started all 13 games for the Blue Devils during the 2022 season and threw for 2,967 yards, 20 touchdowns and six interceptions. He also had 699 rushing yards and 13 rushing touchdowns and was an All-ACC honorable mention selection for his performance.

Clemson cornerback Nate Wiggins leaving early for NFL draft
Wiggins has been a productive player his entire career at Clemson, as he registered 14 pass deflections in 2022 and had eight breakups with two interceptions in 2023. Scouts have noticed his instincts and ability to get his hands on passes.

FSU QB Tate Rodemaker game-day decision for ACC title game​


Florida State could be without another quarterback as it gets set to take on Louisville on Saturday with an ACC championship and a possible berth in the College Football Playoff on the line. Quarterback Tate Rodemaker, who started the team's final regular-season game -- a 24-15 win over Florida -- will be a game-day decision because of a head injury, according to the school. Rodemaker left the Florida game in the fourth quarter after taking a late hit to the head following a scramble. He returned to action two plays later to help cap a touchdown drive. Rodemaker took over the starting job after starter Jordan Travis injured his left leg against North Alabama on Nov. 18. Travis, who has started since the 2021 season, won ACC Player of the Year honors after helping the Seminoles lock up a spot in the conference championship game.

Undefeated Florida State left out of College Football Playoff​


While four teams are celebrating the opportunity to play for a national title on the field, undefeated ACC champion Florida State is on the outside, with coach Mike Norvell saying he's "disgusted and infuriated" with the Seminoles becoming the first unbeaten Power 5 conference winner to ever miss out on the College Football Playoff.

While Michigan (13-0, Big Ten champion), Washington (13-0, Pac-12 champion), Texas (12-1, Big 12 champion) and Alabama (12-1, SEC champion) were the top four teams who made it into the playoff, the Seminoles (13-0) were judged by an untimely run of injuries at the quarterback position.

Michigan, Washington, Texas, Florida State top 4 teams in AP poll​


Michigan is No. 1 in The Associated Press college football poll for the first time since it won its last national championship in 1997, while Georgia slipped to No. 6 on Sunday after its 29-game winning streak was snapped by Alabama. Michigan received 51 first-place votes. No. 2 Washington had 11 first-place votes, and the Huskies were followed by Texas at No. 3 and Florida State Fat No. 4. All four are conference champions, and all but the Longhorns are unbeaten. Alabama moved up three spots to No. 5 after beating Georgia 27-24 in the SEC title game Saturday. The Bulldogs had their string of 24 straight weeks at No. 1 snapped. It was the second-longest run in AP poll history behind USC's 33 straight from 2003 to 2005. Ohio State was seventh, with Oregon, Missouri and Penn State rounding out the top 10.

FSU (13-0) to play Georgia (12-1) in Orange Bowl​


Florida State, the first unbeaten Power 5 conference winner to ever miss out on the College Football Playoff, will settle for a matchup with two-time defending champion Georgia in the Capital One Orange Bowl on Dec. 30. Coach Mike Norvell said the No. 5 Seminoles, who finished 13-0 and won the ACC championship, will be ready for the matchup in Miami Gardens (4 p.m. ET, ESPN/ESPN App). The Seminoles' 19 consecutive wins is the second-longest active streak in FBS. No. 6 Georgia had won 29 straight games prior to Saturday's loss to Alabama in the SEC title game. As a result, the Bulldogs become the first No. 1 team in the penultimate CFP rankings to fall out of the top four after losing during Championship Week.

Athletes sue NCAA, Power 5 for not getting paid​

Duke football player Dewayne Carter, Stanford soccer player Nya Harrison and TCU basketball player Sedona Prince filed their 70-page complaint in the Northern District of California federal court, the same venue where the NCAA has lost a series of antitrust claims in the past decade. Their attorneys requested an injunction that would prevent the NCAA from enforcing rules that prohibit "pay for play" compensation for athletes and seeks damages for past payments the athletes would have received if the current rules were not in place.

The three athletes are represented by Jeffrey Kessler and Steve Berman, who successfully sued the NCAA to remove any restrictions on academic-related payments in the Alston case that was upheld by the Supreme Court in 2021. They also recently were granted class status for a different antitrust case (House v. NCAA) that is seeking billions of dollars that they claim the NCAA cost former athletes because of old rules that restricted athletes from making money through endorsement deals.

Duke hires Penn State's Manny Diaz as new head coach​

Penn State defensive coordinator Manny Diaz has been hired as Duke's next head football coach, it was announced Thursday night. Diaz is coming off a season in which he led the nation's top statistical defense, as the Nittany Lions held opponents to 223.2 yards per game -- the best single-season defensive performance in the sport since Alabama in 2011. He also brings head-coaching experience in the ACC, as he led Miami to three bowl-eligible seasons during his time there from 2019 to 2021. Diaz, whose 2020 Miami teami was ranked as high as No. 7 in the country, was fired after three seasons with a 21-15 record. Miami is 12-12 since his departure. He will take over a Duke program that got an energy jolt during Mike Elko's two seasons as coach. Elko went 9-4 in 2022 and led the Blue Devils to the school's highest national ranking, No. 16, this year. He left last month for the head-coaching job at Texas A&M.

Clemson LB Barrett Carter to return for senior football season​

Clemson linebacker barrett Carter will return to school for his senior season, citing "unfinished business" in a statement posted on social media Thursday. Carter had 59 tackles this past season -- including three sacks and nine tackles for loss -- and ranks as one of the top linebacker prospect for the 2024 NFL draft, according to ESPN draft analysts.

LSU's Daniels, Washington's Penix win top college football awards​

LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels continued to collect postseason awards when additional honors were handed out Friday night. Daniels, named The Associated Press player of the year on Thursday, won the Walter Camp national player of the year award as well as the Davey O'Brien Award as the top quarterback in college football. Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr. won the Maxwell Award, given to the nation's best all-around player, while Payton Wilson of NC State won the Chuck Bednarik Award as the top defensive player as well as the Dick Butkus Award as top linebacker.


Wilson was involved in 138 tackles for the Wolfpack, with 6 sacks, 1 forced fumble, 2 fumble recoveries and 3 interceptions.

LSU QB Jayden Daniels tops field to win Heisman Trophy​

For the second year in a row and the fifth time in the past seven years, a transfer quarterback has won the Heisman Trophy. LSU's Jayden Daniel, who began his college career at Arizona State before transferring to Baton Rouge in 2022, won the sport's most prestigious individual award Saturday night after accounting for 4,946 yards of offense (3,812 passing yards, 1,134 rushing yards) and 50 total touchdowns this season. Daniels received 503 first-place votes and 2,029 total points to beat out two fellow transfer quarterbacks in Washington's Michael Penix Jr. (292 first place, 1,701 total) and Oregon's Bo Nix (51 first place, 885 total), as well as Ohio State wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. (20 first place, 352 total) in a ceremony held at Lincoln Center in New York City. Florida State's Jordan Travis placed fifth after receiving eight first-place votes for 85 total points.
