Golden State Warriors become first pro team to launch NFT collection

The Golden State Warriors launched a nonfungible token (NFT) collection on the OpenSea platform Tuesday morning, becoming the first professional sports team to do so. The NBA has seen huge returns on its blockchain-based platform that allows fans to buy, sell and trade numbered versions of officially licensed video highlights. Since launching last fall, in collaboration with Dapper Labs, the NBA has raked in an estimated $500 million in sales from Top Shot. A portion of the proceeds from the NFT auction will go to the Warriors Community Foundation, which works to promote educational equity in the Bay Area.

Alex Rodriguez group to purchase Minnesota Timberwolves for $1.5 billion, sources say

Minnesota Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor has reached a verbal agreement on a $1.5 billion sale of the team to former baseball star Alex Rodriguez and e-commerce mogul Marc Lore, sources told ESPN, confirming multiple reports. NBA approval of the deal was still pending, and neither side has publicly announced an agreement. The two sides had entered an exclusive 30-day negotiating window April 10 that expired without an agreement, though the sides continued to negotiate in good faith, sources previously told ESPN's Brian Windhorst. Taylor previously said a deal was contingent on Lore and Rodriguez keeping the team in Minnesota. The team has a lease at the Target Center through 2035, but the buyout is $50 million.
Lore and Rodriguez are 50-50 partners. They tried to buy the New York Mets last year but were beaten out for the Major League Baseball club by hedge fund manager Steve Cohen. Taylor, 80, a lifelong Minnesotan who bought the Timberwolves in 1994 for $88 million to save them from moving to New Orleans, has said he will continue to run the club for two more seasons until a handover in 2023. The Minnesota Lynx WNBA team is included in the sale.

NBA creates Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Social Justice Champion award

The NBA has created a new award in honor of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, the league's all-time leading scorer and a noted civil rights activist, that will recognize a player who best embodies his striving for social justice and racial equality, the league announced Thursday. The winner of the inaugural Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Social Justice Champion award will be announced during the playoffs and will receive $100,000 from the league to donate to an organization of his choosing. Four additional finalists will receive $25,000. Abdul-Jabbar won three consecutive NCAA championships (1967 to 1969) while at UCLA. In between them, he, alongside famed sociologist Harry Edwards, helped organize a boycott of the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City due to the then-recent assassinations of civil rights leaders Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr., and the continued mistreatment of Black people in America. While in the NBA, Abdul-Jabbar and other famous Black male athletes, including Jim Brown and Bill Russell, organized the Cleveland Summit in support of world champion boxer Muhammad Ali's decision to refuse entry into the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.
