NFL MVP Dak Prescott? Time for Cowboys QB to stake his claim

As December beckons, Prescott has an opportunity to further his case to become the NFL's Most Valuable Player. The Cowboys' next five games come against teams with real playoff or Super Bowl hopes. After the Cowboys host the Seahawks Thursday night, the Philadelphia Eagles come to AT&T Stadium on Dec. 10. That's followed by road games against the Buffalo Bills and Miami Dolphins before a short week to get ready for the Detroit Lions at home on Dec. 30.

In his past six games, Prescott has thrown for 1,874 yards and completed 72.3% of his passes with 18 touchdown passes and two interceptions. According to ESPN BET, he has the fourth-best odds to win the award behind Philadelphia's Jalen Hurts, Baltimore's Lamar Jackson and Mahomes. Prescott is hot right now. Only Tony Romo (19 in 2007) has thrown more touchdown passes than Prescott's 18 in a six-game span of the same season in team history. Don Meredith had 20 touchdown passes in a six-game run that spanned the 1965 and 1966 seasons.

LB Shaquille Leonard joins Eagles over Cowboys

Some much-needed linebacker relief is on its way, as the Philadelphia Eagles agreed to terms on a one-year deal with veteran Shaquille Leonard on Monday. Leonard was deciding between signing with the Eagles or the Dallas Cowboys. Those two teams play each other Sunday night in a pivotal NFC East matchup. Leonard had two back surgeries last season to address nerve issues that were impacting his lower body and limiting his explosiveness. His playing time had been inconsistent during his recovery, but coaches told him they would continue to revisit the issue as the season progressed. Leonard, a 2018 second-round pick out of South Carolina State and Defensive Rookie of the Year, was a first-team All-Pro in 2018, 2020 and 2021. Leonard has posted 614 tackles, 30 tackles for loss, 15 sacks and 17 forced fumbles since coming into the league.

Cowboys' Mike McCarthy has surgery, expects to coach vs. Eagles

Dallas Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy underwent successful surgery Wednesday -- five days before the biggest game of the regular season against the Phlladelphia Eagles after being diagnosed with an acute case of appendicitis, the team said. McCarthy experienced abdominal pain Wednesday morning before seeing the team's medical staff. He had the procedure, is expected to be released from the hospital later Wednesday and anticipates coaching Sunday. The Cowboys are first in points per game (32.3) and fifth in yards per game (380.4) with McCarthy calling plays. He has a 164-100-2 career regular-season record and is the fifth-winningest active coach.

Eagles vs. Cowboys, part 2: Everything to know about SNF

When the Dallas Cowboys exited Lincoln Financial Field on Nov. 5, they left with a 28-23 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. But they have not lost since. When these teams meet for Sunday's rematch at AT&T Stadium, the Eagles arrive coming off a 42-19 dismantling by the San Francisco 49ers, their worst since a 25-point loss to the Cowboys in the 2021 finale, but still holders of the NFL's best record. Sunday's contest will not settle the NFC East, but it could tell the story of both teams' seasons. A Philadelphia win would all but lock up the division crown, becoming the first team to win consecutive NFC East titles since the 2003-04 Eagles. A Dallas win would at least temporarily put them first in the division because of tiebreaker rules, but more importantly, display that they can hang with the NFL's best.

What changed since the last time these teams played?

Cowboys

The Cowboys are 4-0 since that loss. Quibble with the competition because the New York Giants, Carolina Panthers, Washington Commanders and Seattle Seahawks are a combined 15-34, but the Cowboys have scored at least 33 points in each game, with an average margin of victory of 24 points. Entering the first meeting, the Cowboys' offensive line -- Tyron Smith, Tyler Biadasz, Zack Martin, Terence Steele had played just two games together. They have now played the past five together and McCarthy believes offensive line continuity is a direct result to wins.

Eagles
The habit of falling behind early continued, as they tied a record with four consecutive wins when trailing at halftime. The high-wire act came crashing down against the 49ers, who throttled Philly after building a 14-6 lead at intermission. The defense has sunk to 32nd on third down and 29th in the red zone. Even its bread and butter, the run defense, has faltered of late, yielding 162 yards on average over its past three outings. The addition of linebacker Shaquille Leonard who was also considering signing with the Cowboys -- should help. On offense, the run game has hit a rough patch, with running backs managing just 20 yards on nine carries against the 49ers. The coaches have been emphasizing the need to get D'Andre Swift & Co. going starting this week.
