Cowboys back on track ahead of Week 9 Eagles showdown​


At the start of the month, after a dominating win against the New England Patriots, Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones was more than willing to discuss the impending matchup against the San Francisco 49ers, who had ended the Cowboys' previous two seasons. The Cowboys ended up losing 42-10 at Levi's Stadium. At the close of the month, after Sunday's 43-20 domination of the Los Angeles Rams, Jones was unusually quiet when it came to the impending matchup with another NFC elite, the Philadelphia Eagles, next week.

The Cowboys carried high emotions into the San Francisco game. The losses in the wild-card and divisional round the past two seasons pierced their confidence. They wanted to show they belonged with the NFC's elite but were walloped in every way, leaving most everyone believing they were the same old Cowboys.The Cowboys (5-2) get a second chance to show what they can be against an elite team in Week 9 versus the Eagles (7-1) at Lincoln Financial Field (4:25 p.m. ET, Fox).

This marks the 129th meeting between the Dallas Cowboys and their biggest rival these days, the Philadelphia Eagles. And like many of their previous showdowns, the stakes are again huge as the battle for the NFC East crown will come down to these two and perhaps the entire NFC as well.
Overall, the Cowboys lead their regular-season series against the Eagles, 70-54, having enjoyed a stretch from 1967 to 1978 when they won 21 of 23 matchups. Dallas also owns bragging rights in the playoffs with a 3-1 record. Given so much history, narrowing down the top 10 is obviously no easy task

Cowboys not discouraged by loss to Eagles​


The final outcome was a 28-23 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, but the Dallas Cowboys left Lincoln Financial Field believing it was much closer than five points. It was a matter of inches. An overturned (via replay) touchdown pass to tight end Luke Schoonmaker, whose knee was down before the ball crossed the goal line. Quarterback Dak Prescott's foot landing out of bounds on a 2-point play. A fumble that pass-rusher Micah Parsons nearly recovered inside Philadelphia territory.

At 5-3, the Cowboys are 2½ games behind the Eagles (8-1) in the NFC East. Had the Cowboys won Sunday and were they to win next week against the New York Giants, they would have been in first place in the division and potentially holding the top record in the conference. As it stands, only the Eagles and Detroit Lions (6-2) have more wins in the NFC than Dallas.

The Dec. 10 rematch with the Eagles will come at the end of a three-game homestand for the Cowboys. They play four of their next five games at AT&T Stadium, where they have won 11 in a row. Prescott was clear that the Cowboys were not content with the loss, but there was more belief they could contend a month after that disheartening loss to San Francisco.
