Cowboys star CB Trevon Diggs suffers torn ACL

Dallas Cowboys star cornerback Trevon Diggs suffered a season-ending torn ACL in his left knee during Thursday's practice. Diggs suffered the injury during a one-on-one period in practice and was briefly spotted inside the team facility on crutches before undergoing an MRI, which revealed the tear. It is a massive loss for a Cowboys defense that is ranked No. 1 in the NFL in yards allowed and points per game through two weeks. Since entering the NFL in 2020, Diggs has 18 interceptions -- tied for the most in the NFL with J.C. Jackson of the Los Angeles Chargers. According to NFL Next Gen Stats data, Diggs has allowed just three catches for 31 yards on eight targets as the nearest defender in coverage this season. Quarterbacks have a 9.9 passer rating on throws with Diggs as the nearest defender. Diggs has forced a fumble, intercepted a pass and recorded three pass breakups while being credited with six tackles in two games.

Jerry Jones hints he has surprise for Ezekiel Elliott when Cowboys play host to Patriots in Week 4

When the Dallas Cowboys host the New England Patriots this Sunday, they will also host a franchise legend in running back Ezekiel Elliot. The former No. 4 overall pick was released this offseason after seven years with the team, and he ranks No. 3 in franchise history in rushing yards (8,262). Now, he's toting the rock for Bill Belichick. During an interview with 105.3 The Fan, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was asked if there were any festivities scheduled before the game to honor Elliott. Jones appeared to confirm there is something in the works without revealing exactly what it is.

Elliott exploded onto the NFL scene with the Cowboys in 2016, leading the league with 1,631 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns while averaging 108.7 rushing yards per game. Elliott also led the league in rushing in 2018, with 1,434 yards and six touchdowns. Elliott is averaging just 40.7 rushing yards per game with the Patriots this year, and has yet to score a touchdown. But he will undoubtedly want to register a strong performance against his former team in Week 4.

Patriots' Ezekiel Elliott 'some emotions' vs. Cowboys
Elliott, who had a career-low 876 rushing yards last season, said there was "minimum" talk about a potential return to the Cowboys on a reduced contract. Pollard, who is fifth in the NFL in rushing with 264 yards on 62 carries in three games, credits Elliott for mentoring him.

"I mean, I don't have that much time to be too emotional," Elliott said on a conference call with Dallas media Wednesday. "I've got to prepare for a game. I've got to go out put my best foot forward. I mean, there are emotions. I may do a good job of kind of hiding them but there will be some emotions."

NFL Week 5 Power Rankings 2023: How all 32 teams stack up
This week, we've updated the rankings and are taking a look at every team's defensive efficiency rating (per ESPN Analytics' Football Power Index). Our 32 NFL Nation reporters also identified the biggest issue on every defense.

No.5: Dallas (3-1)
Seems a little harsh to say run defense after it allowed 2.3 yards per carry against the New England Patriots, but it's run defense. The performance against Arizona in Week 3 still resonates: 222 yards allowed, 180 in the first half, 7.4 yards per carry. The Cowboys know opponents will want to run on them each week, and San Francisco (No. 3 in rushing) is up next, with two games against Philadelphia (No. 2) in the near future. The Cowboys can create takeaways and rush the passer. The best way to neutralize that is to pound the running game. The Cowboys know it and need to remain true to their gap responsibilities.

What Cowboys saw in Trey Lance and what's next for the former 49ers QB

More than two hours before kickoff Sunday at Levi’s Stadium, Trey Lance will be on the field, throwing passes to wide receivers, tight ends and running backs. If the original plan had worked, he would be preparing to play against the Dallas Cowboys as the San Francisco 49ers’ starting quarterback. Lance, the No. 3 pick in the 2021 draft, would be on his way to becoming San Francisco’s next Joe Montana or Steve Young. Or at the very least Jeff Garcia or Jimmy Garoppolo. Instead, he will be the Cowboys’ No. 3 quarterback -- eligible to play only if something happens to starter Dak Prescott and backup Cooper Rush -- throwing those pregame passes to some practice-squad players who make the trip. That’s because six weeks ago the Niners traded Lance to the Cowboys, and now Lance is settling into his new life in Dallas.

On Aug. 23, he was told by San Francisco coach Kyle Shanahan that he would be the No. 3 quarterback behind Brock Purdy and Sam Darnold. The Niners said they wanted him to stay, but if he wanted a change of scenery, they would do their best to accommodate him. Ninety minutes later, Lance returned to the SAP Performance Facility in Santa Clara, California, and requested a trade. Two days later, he was a member of the Cowboys, acquired for a fourth-round pick in a deal that surprised even some in the Dallas organization. The Cowboys were not considered one of the top landing spots for Lance. An NFL front office source indicated the Buffalo Bills were a primary contender for Lance.

Jerry Jones still believes in Cowboys, Dak Prescott after rout
Jones' belief in Prescott, who has lost three straight games to the 49ers, remains strong. The 32-point loss was the second-most lopsided defeat of McCarthy's career and the largest of Prescott's time as the Cowboys starter. The Cowboys are 10-1 after a loss over the past two-plus seasons.

Deebo Samuel warns Cowboys that 49ers rematch might be worse
"I don't think [the Cowboys] want to see us again," Samuel said during an interview with FanDuel's "Up & Adams" podcast. "It might be a little bit worse." Samuel's pointed comment was in response to a question about Parsons, who called out George Kittles for an anti-Cowboys shirt that the 49ers tight end flashed after one of his three touchdowns Sunday night.

Cowboys' transition from playcaller Kellen Moore to Mike McCarthy a work in progress
While McCarthy had been involved in the game-planning process, he wanted to get back to his playcalling roots. After Prescott tied for the NFL lead in interceptions (15) despite starting just 12 games last season, owner and general manager Jerry Jones allowed McCarthy to become the first Cowboys head coach to call plays since Jason Garrett in 2012. After five games, the Cowboys are 17th in yards per game (327.4) and eighth in points (26.8),
