Ware, Howley officially inducted into Hall of Fame

Add two more Cowboys players to the most prestigious list in football history. DeMarcus Ware and Chuck Howley were officially inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Saturday, giving the Cowboys now have 17 former players in Canton. While the wait was certainly different for Ware and Howley, the honor is the same as the two are now surrounded by the best of the best in pro football history. Ware made the HOF in his second year of eligibility while Howley now gets in after waiting 50 years since he last played in 1973.

Ware played 12 seasons, including the first nine with the Cowboys from 2005-13. During that time, he registered a franchise-record 117 career sacks. After Ware left the Cowboys, he joined the Broncos for the final three seasons of his career. In Denver, Ware made two more Pro Bowls, but more importantly, helped the Broncos win Super Bowl 50 against the Panthers. When Ware retired following the 2016 season, he ended up signing a contract with the Cowboys to officially retire with the franchise that drafted him.

Howley spent 13 years in Dallas from 1961-73. He made six Pro Bowls and five All-Pro selections. He helped the Cowboys win their first title in Super Bowl VI, but he was also the MVP of Super Bowl V, becoming the first and still only player in NFL history to win the award on the losing team. In that game against the Colts, Howley had two interceptions and a fumble recovery. A year later, in the win over the Dolphins, Howley didn't get MVP but still had an interception and a fumble recovery.

The 17 players now in the Hall of Fame for the Cowboys, who recognize all players who spent at least five years with the team are:
Troy Aikman, Larry Allen, Tony Dorsett, Charles Haley, Cliff Harris, Bob Hayes, Chuck Howley, Michael Irvin, Bob Lilly, Drew Pearson, Mel Renfro, Deion Sanders, Emmitt Smith, Roger Staubach, DeMarcus Ware, Randy White and Rayfield Wright. Other Cowboys connections in the Hall of Fame include Gil Brandt, Jerry Jones, Jimmy Johnson, Tex Schramm and Tom Landry.

Ex-Cowboys RB Ezekiel Elliott joins Patriots on 1-year deal

Elliott, who was released by the Cowboys on March 15 in a salary cap move, had a career-low 876 rushing yards in 2022, but he scored 12 touchdowns and remained a top short-yardage back and pass protector. However, he averaged 3.9 yards per touch last season, the worst mark among 51 running backs that had at least 100 touches, according to ESPN Stats & Information research.
Elliott agreed to terms with the Patriots on a one-year deal, helping address one of the thinnest positions on the roster, a source confirmed to ESPN. Elliott's one-year deal with the Patriots includes a $3 million base salary and a $1 million signing bonus that can be worth up to $6 million with incentives, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

What does Cowboys' backfield look like behind Tony Pollard?

Since 2019, the Dallas Cowboys always felt they had proper running back depth behind Ezekiel Elliot. Tony Pollard was so good in his first training camp that year that it prompted owner and general manager Jerry Jones to jokingly say, “Zeke, who?” while Elliott held out for a large contract. With his speed and elusiveness, Pollard was a perfect complement to Elliott’s strength and power, eventually supplanting Elliott as the Cowboys’ lead back last season, a move some believe should have been made sooner. In March, the Cowboys released Elliott (who joined the Patroits Monday ) and placed the franchise tag on Pollard to secure his play for at least 2023, but do they have the requisite depth behind him as they enter the season? It’s one reason why connections are being made to veteran free agents like Davin Cook (who reportjy is joining the Jets), Leonard Fournette and anybody else available. Ronald Jones was signed in free agency in March, but he is facing a two-game suspension for violating the NFL’s policy on performance-enhancing drugs. In addition, he suffered a groin injury in practice that could limit his preseason work. That leaves the Cowboys with Rico Dowdle, Malk Davis and Deuce Vaughn as the top contenders behind Pollard.

'Back home' at left tackle, Cowboys need Tyron Smith to stay healthy

Through it all, Tyron Smith does not believe he is jinxed. The Dallas Cowboys’ eight-time Pro Bowl left tackle has missed 33 games in the past three seasons. A neck injury in 2020 limited him to two games. A high ankle sprain in 2021 and bout with COVID-19 cost him six games. Then there was last year, when he tore his left hamstring off the bone during training camp; that required surgery and forced him to miss 13 games. A key to the Cowboys’ success this season will be the health of their offensive line, considering the lack of experience with their backups, so Smith’s health is paramount. He has not played a full season since 2015, but instead of missing three games a season -- which happened from 2016 to 2019 because of back, knee and neck injuries -- he has missed substantial time the past three seasons. Smith is the longest-tenured Cowboy, entering his 13th season. He turns 33 in December. When teams envision a left tackle, the 6-foot-5, 320-pound Smith still looks the part. The Cowboys altered his practice schedule in the summer, giving him some days off, but he has not missed a day to nurse any kind of injury.

Gil Brandt, who helped build Cowboys into 'America's Team,' dies

Pro Football Hall of Famer Gil Brandt, one of the architects who helped turn the Dallas Cowboys from an expansion franchise into "America's Team," died Thursday. He was 91. He was the Cowboys' vice president of player personnel for 28 years, from 1960 when the team entered the NFL as an expansion franchise until May 1989, when he was fired by new owner and general manager Jerry Jones. Under the leadership of Brandt, coach Tom Landry and general manager Tex Schramm, the Cowboys posted 20 consecutive winning seasons from 1966 until 1985 and made five Super Bowl appearances, with two championships. The Cowboys won those titles by defeating the Miami Dolphins 24-3 in Super Bowl VI and the Denver Broncos 27-10 in Super Bowl XII.

Sources: Cowboys RT Terence Steele gets $86.8M extension

The Dallas Cowboys continue to lock up key pieces by signing right tackle Terence Sreele to a five-year extension worth $86.8 million, including $50 million guaranteed, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter on Sunday. Steele, 26, joined the Cowboys as an undrafted free agent out of Texas Tech in 2020, starting 14 games. He started 13 games in 2021 and 2022 but suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament, medial collateral ligament and medial patellofemoral ligament in his left knee to end his 2022 season. While he was limited in his work during the offseason program, he did not miss a practice in training camp and will start in the season opener against the New YYork next week.
