2023 NFL rookie updates: Notes on 31 first-round draft picks

A few big-name NFL veterans stole the spotlight at mandatory minicamps by showing up, or not showing up at all, or delaying showing up. And it kept the news cycle humming. Naturally, there was a great deal of chatter about the three first-round quarterbacks, all of whom were taken in the first four picks. What about the defensive linemen? How about the four wide receivers taken in a row? They're all here. The answers are listed in the order of how Round 1 played out.

No.26 DT Mazi Smith, Dallas Cowboys

The Cowboys did not do any 11-on-11 work during the organized team activities or minicamp, so making any judgment on Smith is difficult because so much of what he will do is about his size (6-3, 325) and strength. But what the offseason work allowed Smith to do was learn what the coaches will want from him technically, and they have said he has picked everything up fast. He has a willing mentor in veteran Johnathan Hankns.

Brandin Cooks' impact on Cowboys' WR corps goes well beyond his speed

Brandon Cook is fast. Like, fast fast. At the 2014 NFL scouting combine, he was timed at 4.33 seconds in the 40, the fastest receiver to run that day in Indianapolis. With the New Orleans Saints in 2016, he had a 98-yard touchdown catch against the Oakland Raiders, running by two defenders. Drew Brees’ pass traveled 27 yards. Cooks did the rest of the work. With the New England Patriots a year later against the Raiders, he had a 64-yard touchdown catch on a go-ball from Tom Brady. In the past five seasons, he had 16 catches of at least 40 yards and another six of at least 36 yards. Now in his first season with the Cowboys, Cooks turns 30 in September, and he is not about to battle his teammates to prove how fast he remains as he enters the 10th year of his career. Cooks’ impact goes beyond his speed. Lamb and Gallup said they have picked up small tricks of the trade Cooks has mastered while totaling six 1,000-yard seasons with four different franchises.

Cowboys sign USFL standout Brandon Aubrey to vie for kicker job

The Dallas Cowboys have finally added another kicker to their roster, signing Brandon Aubrey, who spent the past two seasons with the Birmingham Stallions of the USFL. The Cowboys did not take a hard look at the veteran free agent market, which includes Robbie Gould and Mason Crosby, and last year's kicker, Brett Mahe, was not inclined to re-sign with the team after putting up a franchise-record 137 points but struggling in the playoffs by missing five point-after attempts.

Sources: Cowboys' Zack Martin considering not reporting to camp

Dallas Cowboys six-time All-Pro guard and team captain Zack Martin is considering not reporting to training camp because of his unhappiness with his contract and the team's lack of interest in restructuring it, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter. Martin said he is "woefully underpaid relative to the market," a source said. Martin is scheduled to make about $7 million less this season than the NFL's top-paid guards Chris Lindstrom. of the Falcons and Quenton of the Colts are at the top of that list this season at an average of $20 million. Martin, who has missed just eight games in his career, has been named to the Pro Bowl eight times. The only guard with more Pro Bowl appearances in team history is Hall of Famer Larry Allen (nine).

Cowboys' Dak Prescott 'guarantees' fewer interceptions this season

It might not be a Joe Namath-type guarantee of winning a Super Bowl, but Dalls Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott did guarantee one thing for 2023 when he met with the media for the first time in training camp Thursday. "I am going to lessen my interception numbers," Prescott said. "That is a guarantee." Last year, Prescott tied for the league lead in interceptions with 15, despite missing five games with a broken thumb. In the playoff loss to the San Fransico 49ers, he was picked off two more times. His interceptions have been a constant topic of discussion throughout the offseason.

Mike McCarthy's history is another reason the Cowboys believe Prescott will cut back on the picks. Brett Favre went from a league-high 29 interceptions in 2005 to 19 in McCarthy's first year as coach of the Green Bay Packers, Aaron Rodgers had double-digit interceptions just twice in his time with McCarthy as coach. McCarthy will call plays for the Cowboys this season.

He was named to the Pro Bowl each of the last two seasons. He shares the team record for interceptions in a season with 11 in 2021.

Ezekiel Elliott wishes Tony Pollard, Cowboys RBs 'good luck via text
Elliott remains a free agent as training camps begin, although he has been working out the entire offseason, either with former teammates at Dak Prescott's backyard field or his personal running backs coach, Josh Hicks. Last year, Pollard ran for 1,007 yards on 193 carries while catching 39 passes for 371 yards. He had 12 touchdowns.

At 30, Cowboys QB Dak Prescott finds 'urgency' in everthing
On Saturday, Prescott turns 30. He is the clear leader of the Cowboys, the last player remaining from the 2016 draft class with the departures of Ezekiel Elliott and Anthony Brown, and singularly focused on finding his way to the stage at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas after Super Bowl LVIII on Feb. 11, 2024, holding the Lombardi Trophy.

******
Troy Aikman was 29 when he won his last of three Super Bowls with the Cowboys in the 1990s. Roger Staubach was 29 when he won his first Super Bowl in 1971 and 36 when he appeared in his last in 1978, but he was 27 when he entered the NFL after his Navy commitment.

Dak Prescott, Trevon Diggs: Trash talk 'just competitiveness'
Dallas Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs was seen on video yelling to Dak Prescott to "shut your b---- ass up" after a play with Prescott lightly throwing the ball back at Diggs. Diggs and Prescott have playfully gone back and forth since 2020 when the Cowboys selected the cornerback in the second round.

Micah Parsons eyes being 'one of the greatest Hall of Famers'

Ware, Howley officially inducted into Hall of Fame

Add two more Cowboys players to the most prestigious list in football history. DeMarcus Ware and Chuck Howley were officially inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Saturday, giving the Cowboys now have 17 former players in Canton. While the wait was certainly different for Ware and Howley, the honor is the same as the two are now surrounded by the best of the best in pro football history. Ware made the HOF in his second year of eligibility while Howley now gets in after waiting 50 years since he last played in 1973.

Ware played 12 seasons, including the first nine with the Cowboys from 2005-13. During that time, he registered a franchise-record 117 career sacks. After Ware left the Cowboys, he joined the Broncos for the final three seasons of his career. In Denver, Ware made two more Pro Bowls, but more importantly, helped the Broncos win Super Bowl 50 against the Panthers. When Ware retired following the 2016 season, he ended up signing a contract with the Cowboys to officially retire with the franchise that drafted him.

Howley spent 13 years in Dallas from 1961-73. He made six Pro Bowls and five All-Pro selections. He helped the Cowboys win their first title in Super Bowl VI, but he was also the MVP of Super Bowl V, becoming the first and still only player in NFL history to win the award on the losing team. In that game against the Colts, Howley had two interceptions and a fumble recovery. A year later, in the win over the Dolphins, Howley didn't get MVP but still had an interception and a fumble recovery.
