Source: NFL fines Chiefs' Reid, Mahomes a total of $150K

Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid was fined $100,000 and quarterback Patrick Mahomes was fined $50,000 for violating NFL rules about public criticism of game officials, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter on Saturday. Mahomes was also cited by the league for unsportsmanlike conduct after yelling at the officials late in last week's loss to the Buffalo Bills. Both were upset with an offside penalty on Chiefs wideout Kadarius Toney that wiped out what would have been the go-ahead touchdown with less than two minutes remaining. Instead, the Chiefs wound up turning the ball over on downs and losing to the Bills 20-17.

Tug-of-war added to Pro Bowl Games skills competitions

The Pro Bowl Games skills competitions are back for 2024 with a new event that is likely to grab the attention of offensive and defensive linemen: tug-of-war. The revamped Pro Bowl Games return for the second consecutive year, scheduled for Feb. 1 and Feb. 4 in Orlando, Florida. The centerpiece of the weekend remains the Sunday afternoon flag-football competitions, but the NFL has announced the slate of accompanying skills competitions set to take place over two days. The tug-of-war competition is an attempt to feature the linemen who might not be as involved in the flag-football aspect of the event. Teams of five players from the AFC and NFC will be positioned over a foam pit in a best-of-three competition. Like all the skills challenges, the winning team will win points toward the overall Pro Bowl Games championship that is tabulated at the conclusion of all events.

Lamar Jackson authors 'MVP performance' for Baltimore Ravens

When quarterback Lamar Jackson walked onto the field for pregame warmups, he heard the chants of "MVP" coming from Baltimore Ravens fans at Levi's Stadium. After the Ravens' 33-19 victory over the San Francisco 49ers, it was Jackson's coaches and teammates declaring him "hands down" the best player in football. In a battle of the teams with the best records in the league, Jackson took control of the MVP race by resoundingly out-dueling 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy. Weaving around the 49ers pass-rushers all game, Jackson threw for 252 yards and two touchdowns while leading Baltimore in rushing with 45 yards. Purdy, meanwhile, threw a career-worst four interceptions.

Entering Monday night, Purdy was the betting favorite for NFL MVP and Jackson was second, according to ESPN BET. After the game, Jackson became the frontrunner for MVP (-180) with two weeks remaining in the regular season. With 19 touchdown passes this season, Jackson would become one of the more unlikely NFL MVPs. The fewest touchdown passes by an MVP was 24 by Steve McNair, according to ESPN Stats & Information research. The Ravens were 6.5-point underdogs to the 49ers. That's the second-largest underdog role in Jackson's six-year career.

Broncos to bench Russell Wilson, will start Jarrett Stidham

The Denver Broncos, facing a looming decision about Russell Wilson's future with the organization, have benched the nine-time Pro Bowl quarterback for Sunday's game against the Los Angeles Chargers. Broncos coach Sean Payton informed the team Wednesday morning that Jarrett Stidham will start Sunday with Wilson serving as the backup. Next season marks the first year of a five-year, $242.6 million extension signed in 2022 by Wilson, who already will make $39 million guaranteed in 2024.

The Broncos are 16th in the league in scoring (21.8 points per game), 20th on third down (36.7%), 31st in goal-to-go situations (53.6%) and 25th in passing (187.5 yards per game). Wilson, 35, is tied for sixth in the league in touchdowns with 26, but is 18th in yards passing and has one 300-yard game this season -- in Denver's 70-20 loss to the Dolphins. What the Broncos do with Wilson moving forward will be the biggest roster decision they face in the offseason. The Broncos have just six draft picks in April, with no second-rounder, and would face unprecedented dead money charges of $85 million combined over the 2024 and 2025 seasons if they cut Wilson.

Julius Peppers, Antonio Gates headline finalists for football HOF

First-time candidates Julius Peppers and Antonio Gates joined nine returning finalists who advanced to the final stage of voting for the Pro Football Hall of Fame's class of 2024. Peppers and Gates were announced Wednesday as finalists in their first year of eligibility. They will be joined on the 15-player ballot by five-time finalist wide receivers Torry Holt and Reggie Wayne. Seven other players returned as finalists, with Patrick Willis, Andre Johnson, Dwight Freeney, Jared Allen, Willie Anderson, Darren Woodson and Devin Hester all back to this step.

Defensive backs Eric Allen and Rodney Harrison, running back Fred Taylor and offensive lineman Jahri Evans made it to this stage for the first time after previously being semifinalists. The 15 finalists will be trimmed to 10 then to five during the selection meeting early next year. The final five candidates will need to receive 80% of the votes from the panel to get into the Hall. Four finalists previously announced are Buddy Parker in the coaching category, and Randy Gradishar, Steve McMichael and Art Powell in the senior category. They also will get in if they earn support from at least 80% of voters. The class of 2024 will be announced at the NFL Honors show in Las Vegas on Feb. 8, when The Associated Press' season awards for 2023 also will be announced.

Peppers and Gates were both college basketball players before finding their greatest success in football. Peppers finished his career with 159.5 sacks -- the fourth most since they became official in 1982. He had 10 seasons with double-digit sacks; only Hall of Famers Bruce Smith (13) and Reggie White (12) had more. Gates finished with 955 catches for 11,841 yards and an NFL record for tight ends with 116 touchdown receptions. Only Hall of Famer Tony Gonzalez and Jason Witten have more catches or receiving yards as a tight end.

Russell Wilson: Broncos told me to adjust contract or be benched

Russell Wilson said that in the days after he helped orchestrate the Denver Broncos' first win over the Kansas City Chiefs since 2015, team officials approached him to adjust a salary guarantee in his contract, and if he didn't, he would be "benched for the rest of the year.'' Coach Sean Payton announced Wednesday that Wilson lost his starting job in favor of Jarrett Stidham for Sunday's home game against the Los Angeles Chargers. Payton has said it was strictly a decision based "on winning" and "to get a spark offensively."

But Wilson said Friday the Broncos approached him about waiving a guarantee in the five-year, $242.6 million contract he signed in 2022 that would give the veteran quarterback, who already is guaranteed $39 million in 2024 whether he is on the team or not, another $37 million (his 2025 salary) guaranteed if he could not pass a physical on the fifth day of the new league year in March. Team sources have said they hoped to adjust the timing of that guarantee. Wilson continued to express hope he has a future with the Broncos but admitted he has considered the possibility he does not.

Bears celebrate win, top pick in 2024 NFL draft with Panthers loss

The Chicago Bears closed out the last day of 2023 with plenty to celebrate. The Bears beat the Atlanta Falcons 37-17 during their final game of the year at Soldier Field, which marked their seventh win of the season and fifth straight at home. After starting the season 2-7, Chicago has won four of its past five games. The Panthers' 26-0 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Arizona Cardinals' win over the Philadelphia Eagles ensures Carolina (2-14) will finish the season with the worst record in the NFL, meaning the Bears are officially locked into possession of the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 draft.

The Bears will head into the offseason with the No. 1 selection for a second straight year. Chicago earned the top pick on the last day of the 2022 season and traded it to Carolina on March 10 in exchange for the ninth and 61st overall selections in the 2023 draft, Carolina's 2024 first-round pick, a 2025 second-rounder and Moore. The Panthers lost their first six games of the season and fired first-year coach Frank Reich after a 1-10 start. Carolina entered Sunday having scored in 342 straight regular-season games since Week 13 in 2012, the second-longest active streak in the NFL, behind only the Baltimore Ravens, who are now up to 352.

NFL video reminds players to 'clearly' report as eligible receivers

In a video distributed Tuesday, the NFL reminded its teams that players bear the burden of ensuring they have properly reported as eligible receivers -- a clear response to last weekend's chaotic finish in the Dallas Cowboys' 20-19 victory over the Detroit Lions. Players who wear Nos. 50-79 or 90-99 must report to the referee in order to be eligible to receive a pass. For the play in question, Lions left tackle Taylor Decker, who wears No. 68, approached referee Brad Allen to report as eligible. "It is the responsibility of the player to be sure that change in status is clearly communicated to the referee by both a physical signal, with his hands up and down in front of his chest, and to report to the referee his intention to report as an eligible receiver," NFL senior vice president Walt Anderson said in the video.

"It is the responsibility of the player to be sure that change in status is clearly communicated to the referee by both a physical signal, with his hands up and down in front of his chest, and to report to the referee his intention to report as an eligible receiver," NFL senior vice president Walt Anderson said in the video. But two other Lions offensive linemen -- tackles Dan Skipper and Penei Sewell also approached Allen in an attempt to confuse the Cowboys on who ultimately would be the eligible receiver. Allen did not appear to acknowledge Decker and instead declared Skipper as eligible. As a result, Decker was ineligible and had committed illegal touching when he caught what would have been a go-ahead 2-point conversion with 23 seconds remaining in the game.

Lions' Sam LaPorta breaks NFL mark for receptions by rookie TE

Sam LaPorta added his name to the history books Sunday, but it came at a cost. After setting the NFL record for most receptions in a season by a rookie tight end, the Detroit Lions standout left the game with a left knee injury prior to halftime and did not return. Based on the initial MRI, he most likely suffered a hyperextension and a bone bruise, a source told ESPN's Jeremy Fowler. LaPorta caught four more passes in the game and finished the regular season with 86 catches for 889 yards. With his touchdown, he became just the third rookie tight end in NFL history with double-digit receiving touchdowns, joining Mike Ditka (12 in 1961) and Rob Gronkowski (10 in 2010). The Lions selected LaPorta with the 34th pick of the NFL draft out of Iowa. He was recently named to the Pro Bowl, becoming the second rookie tight end in team history to make a Pro Bowl, joining Charlie Sanders (1968).

Bill Belichick on Patriots future: 'I'm getting ready for K.C.'

New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick deflected multiple questions about his job status Wednesday, repeating the same answer each time: "I'm getting ready for Kansas City." Belichick's 3-10 team hosts the Chiefs on Sunday, a game that was flexed from ESPN's "Monday Night Football" mainly because of the team's struggles. Speculation about Belichick's future has swirled in part because owner Robert Kraft has been clear about his expectations. Entering the fourth season since quarterback Tom Brady's free agency departure, which pained Kraft, the 82-year-old owner said in March that "it's very important to me that we make the playoffs." Kraft hasn't publicly addressed Belichick's future since the season began but spoke in generalities Saturday as a guest on ESPN's "College GameDay," which was live from Gillette Stadium before the Army-Navy game there.

Belichick: Pats' season 'disappointing'; will meet with Kraft

New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick said after Sunday's 17-3 season-ending loss to the New York Jets that questions about his job status will be answered in time. Speculation has swirled over whether Belichick will return for a 25th season as coach of the Patriots, in part because Kraft had said in March how important it was to him to qualify for the playoffs this season. Instead, the Patriots finished 4-13 and were eliminated from the postseason Dec. 10, the earliest that happened since 2000, Belichick's first year as coach. Belichick, 71, allowed that he still views coaching the same way despite posting the worst record in his Patriots tenure.
