Transformers thread

I'll takea photo of my dinobots one day.
I got to play with my friend's Grimlock for 5 minutes before class in 4th grade....such fond memories....

Transformers One (2024) - It's good fun! I remember when the first trailer came out I thought it would be dumb and all stupid humour and quips. And I mean there is stupid (but usually funny!) humour and plenty of quips, with Bumblebee getting quite a few laughs from me. But the story turns out quite well and touches on things like slavery and body autonomy (wait until you find out why they're called "Autobots"!) It's the story of Optimus and Megatron before they they were enemies and they have a sweet firendship before they want to kill each other. Supposedly it's a prequel to the Michael Bay movies but lol who cares it isn't really. The artstyle is pretty good, it's not the prettiest movie ever but it all moves very smoothly. The only real problem is that it's all very rushed once Megatron turns heel. They have to just have him declare he's going to kill everyone or whatever but it comes a bit out of nowhere after him originally having good motives for wanting to kill Jon Hamm. But yeah I enjoyed it and I guess it'll never get a sequel or anything but it's still worth watching if you want another version of Transformers that doesn't suck.

I liked it too. I did think Megatron becoming evil was a bit abrupt (talk about going off the deep end), but it was good fun over all. One thing I didn’t like, though, and maybe I’m just being old, was how often characters punched each other for comedic effect. In a sort of Animaniacs way. The rest of the movie is teaching good morals of friendship and consideration for others, but whenever a character doesn’t like their friend’s idea they punch them. It just seemed odd in a film aimed at kids of an impressionable age.

There was one one bit where pre-evil Megatron punched Orion that was definitely inspired by this.

...Chris Hemsworth being on the receiving ends both times I just realised.

Update: Still haven't watched any Transformers since Transformers: The Movie. Still looking for a G1 Starscream that won't cause me to rob a bank.

I never really got into Beast Wars, I was "too old" for it by the time it came out but not yet at the age when I was old enough to start liking things from childhood again.

I hated the animated Beast Wars. The more recent live action version was much better.

I'll got to bat for The Beast Wars show from the 90's since it was more thoughtfully written and paced than many modern streaming service "prestige" dramas that are apparently made for grown ups, hardly surprising when you realize that one of the series' showrunners was Babylon 5's story editor. Beast Wars had Shakespearean characters who experienced existential crises, and grew into it's story into a biblically epic plot that retroactively got kids in the 90's like me interested in classic Transformers. Also, it had shredding electric guitar solos and sexual innuendo.

By comparison the recent live action movie was generic and forgettable, featuring crudely defined characters even for what is ostensibly still just a toy commercial. At least it had Ron Perlman, I guess.

Maybe someday I'll try to re-watch animated Beast Wars with less jaded eyes. Loved G1 Transformers and maybe a little G2. I think for me it started going downhill for me when they started messing with the awesome G1 theme song. Then came the stupid Targetmaster and Headmaster bullshit. By then my teenage self was like Ugh. I now they've got a Beast mode. *rolls eyes*

I fell asleep in the middle of Rise Of The Beasts. Transformers One was much better.
