Starfleet Academy - It's Happening

I'll wait to see the final product, of course, and I will watch an ep or two out of curiosity, but this whole thing looks like a gigantic misfire. Like, take the worst elements from Discovery and triple down on that sort of misfire.

Hmm...

Okay:

They hired a bunch of people who can't handle Trek dialogue. Especially Holly Hunter, who seems to have lost the ability to open her mouth while speaking. The only people who got it were Giamatti and Picardo. And 25 years ago I even wonder if Giamatti could have done what he can do now... he's aged incredibly well as an actor.

So the bridge crew is a Jon Hamm impersonator, and some lesbian interstealler Golden Girls? Mkay. SHAVE THAT FLINTSTONE SHADOW, SOLDIER!

Is there such a thing as the SFX being "too good"? I actually miss the simpler FX of the TNG era. Ever since JJ, battle scenes are so detail-oriented, that it's actually harder to digest the overall thing itself that is happening. Focus here! No, focus there! Especially when you add the Shaky Camera Syndrome, another unfortunate JJ legacy. At least I didn't notice many lens flares...

I dislike how brand loyalty (or in the cases of most in the Treksphere, brand addiction), helps these shows accrue viewing numbers. You’ve seen everything this creative team has pumped out so far, hated a lot / so-so on some / liked a smidgen of it, you dislike the concept, it looks, feels and smells like a turd, but you’ll still be a trooper and give it a “chance”; you’ll check out the first episode, or you’re one of those fucking completionists that hasn’t reconciled with the fact you lost that lovin’ feeling for pretty much anything produced under the Trek banner over 20 years ago and force yourself through mental gymnastics to make the viewing experience tolerable. Or Robert Picardo. Cause he was in Voyager, ‘member?

I was lurking on TrekBBS when one of the usual suspects had the nerve to attribute the negative, dismissive fan attitudes to just "a segment of fans." If by segment, you mean the overwhelming majority of online degenerates who bother to talk about Trek? Fuck.

And fuck the hate-watchers too – in particular, those watching via legal means. Don’t go complaining and moaning about the show when you’re actively contributing to its success with your time and subscription.

Well, this is getting the fuck ratioed out of it.

Again.

But hey, a bridge crew that looks like a bunch of lesbian bakers in Portland... that should be a deal clincher right there!

I reckon Bernard (far left) is gonna be the breakout character Tiktok goes nuts for.

I am now also convinced they do certain things with these shows because they know one of the only demographics guaranteed to watch them at this point are right wing fuckheads looking for an excuse to melt down over some culture war nonsense. Not that these shows are "progressive" or leftist in any real way, I think that's long since become self evident to anyone who cares.

A big part of modern Trek's problem is that it can't help but be miserable and dour, but when it tries being upbeat and positive it comes across as incredibly insincere and frankly, it gives me the same douche-chills I get from trying to watch The West Wing or any cop show. It's just a handful of rich kids jerking off over stuff they own the copyright to.

I think the floor for these shows is made up of longtime fans who fall into a few camps (with a lot of overlap): hate watchers, custodians of the true Trek flame (who will watch in order to clarify online why it isn't Trek), the godawful "if Star Trek is in the title" or "some Trek is better then no Trek" degenerates, and finally the potentially dozens who genuinely enjoy it, somewhat.

And not a one of these subsets is enjoying the experience much. Hell, I never would've stuck with Discovery as long as I did if it weren't due to the entertainment of bitching about it online.

Even more amusing is that in their pursuit of different demographics, I imagine they always end up landing the same 40+ male majority, watching everything from Picard to Star Trek preschool shows

I haven't watched any new Trek for well over a year and doubt I'll make an exception here. It's a pity the rest of the fandom "floor" can't walk away; if they couldn't rely on a prebuilt viewership lapping up any ol' slop, they might be forced into making something decent.

There is certainly an overriding (at times completely comically self aware) nihilism regarding the franchise and the need to consume more of it that I find pervasive amongst even fans that are still actively pursuing this material, and bother to talk about it in the spaces I frequent. Like, even about stuff they appear to be enthusiastic about ie Lower Decks or SNW. Far be it for me to judge anyone for their addictions as I inhale entire fuckin' trees over here, especially in this hellscape. People tend to cling to anything remotely familiar in times of stress, I can remember being the same way. Shit, I still AM the same way or I wouldn't be here!

I imagine there are casual fans of Star Trek historically, stumbling across shit like this or Picard or Discovery, absentmindedly and blissfully unaware since they just kind of remember watching TNG with the kids back in the 90s, and landing in full throated Klingon dual-cock psycho tardigrade titty-torture and "Trauma!" Their reactions aren't really logged anywhere, are they?

I wonder if in 20 years there will still be Star Trek conventions, and if there will be huge lineups of people waiting with glee for their autograph of "mush mouthed Klingon #42 from Discovery" or "Sexy Tribble" from SFA, or whatever. One of the things we are going to discover together on our journey through the 21st century is how far "brand recognition" can stretch phenomena like Star Trek or Star Wars or Halo, etc. before they become truly untenable.

This is Starfleet where you will be expected to be at peak physical fitness, now here are your instructors two fat ladies and a thousand year old hologram, and captain dainty, who looks like she is trying to get replaced, or find some way out of her contract.

I like a good bad guy, but he shouldn't be the only one I'm rooting for.

Also if you have three separate characters that are half Klingon, then you have two too many.

That's just lazy writing.

Is the one in the middle a Jem'hadar?

Half Jemhadar half Klingon, I guess the Klingon was on the mother's side.
