Baker Mayfield has to prove he's better than Sam Darnold to start for Carolina Panthers​


After months of on-again, off-again negotiations, quarterback Baker Mayfield is now a member of the Carolina Panthers after they sent the Cleveland Browns a 2024 conditional draft pick for him in Wednesday's trade. But does adding Mayfield make the Panthers a playoff team in 2022? Mayfield also will have to prove himself to first-year Panthers offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo, who, in a 2018 New York Post story, rated Mayfield sixth among the top quarterbacks in the draft. If it works out, and the 27-year-old Mayfield is successful, Carolina could have the long-term solution at quarterback it has been looking for since coach Matt Rhule took over the team in 2020. If it doesn’t, Carolina will be back in the quarterback market – and possibly head coaching market in 2023.

Baker Mayfield Traded To Carolina Panthers​


Baker Mayfield's time in Cleveland is officially over, the former first overall pick is heading to the Carolina Panthers, according to reports. 27-year-old Mayfield is being shipped to Charlotte in exchange for a 2024 conditional 5th-round pick, per Ian Rapoport. The trade -- which is pending a physical -- comes after months of speculation ... with Mayfield penning a heartfelt goodbye to Browns fans amid Cleveland's pursuit of quarterback Deshaun Watson.The Browns will pay $10.5 million of Mayfield's salary this season with the Panthers shelling out $5 million. Mayfield joins a familiar face in the QB room -- fellow 2018 top pick Sam Darnold as well as rookie Matt Corral and P.J. Walker.

Djokovic's drop and that of runner-up Nick Kyrgios from No. 40 to No. 45, despite reaching the first Grand Slam final of his career, are a result of the decisions by the WTA and ATP to not award any ranking points for Wimbledon in response to the All England Club's ban on athletes from Russia and Belarus over the war in Ukraine.
 

Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, Paul Lawrie named honorary St. Andrews members​


Tiger Woods has been made an honorary member of St. Andrews on the eve of the 150th Open, with the R&A also recognizing former Open champions Rory Mcllroy and Paul Lawrie on Wednesday. Woods has won The Open on three occasions, including twice at St. Andrews. Having played on the Old Course as an amateur in 1995, he won his first Open there in 2000 and followed it up with another triumph in 2005 before winning at Royal Liverpool Golf Club in 2006. McIlroy has one Open title to his name, in 2014, and Lawrie was victorious in 1999.

Duke Blue Devils men, UConn Huskies women to compete in Jimmy V Classic basketball events
The men's doubleheader will take place Dec. 6 at Madison Square Garden, with Duke facing Iowa and Texas playing Illinois. - The women's games will be hosted on campus sites Dec. 4: UConn at Notre Dame and Virginia Tech at Tennessee.

G League Ignite relocating to Las Vegas suburb of Henderson​


The G League Ignite said Friday that the team has struck a multiyear deal to relocate to Henderson, Nevada. The Ignite had been training in Walnut Creek, California, since their inception and played home games this past season in Las Vegas, about 15 miles from their new home.The team exists to develop young prospects in preparation for the NBA draft. It has featured three eventual top-10 picks, Jalen Green and Jonathan Kuminga last year, Dyson Daniels this year in its first two seasons.

Tiger Woods misses cut after finishing the second round of the Open Championship 3 over​


As Tiger Woods started his walk down the 18th fairway of the Old Course at St. Andrews on Friday, he noticed that his caddie, Joe LaCava, and playing partners, Matt Fitzpatrick and Max Homa, had stopped behind him. The trio were waiting for Woods, a three-time Open winner, to cross the famous Swilcan Bridge. As Woods slowly walked across the iconic stone landmark at the "home of golf," Woods, a 15-time major champion, even wiped away a few tears before reaching the 18th green. Woods, a three-time winner of The Open, including in 2000 and 2005 at St. Andrews, won't be around for the 150th anniversary celebration this weekend. He carded a 3-over 75 in the second round, and his 36-hole total of 9 over was well behind the leaders.

Serena Williams to play in Toronto tennis tournament ahead of US Open​


Serena Williams has decided to compete next month in Toronto, having returned to action two weeks ago at Wimbledon after a year away from competition, tournament organizers said Thursday. Williams, who suffered a second straight Wimbledon first-round exit this year, elected to use her protected ranking to enter the main draw of the Aug. 6-15 National Bank Open for the first time since her run to the 2019 final.

NCAA champ Randolph Ross booted from world track and field championships over missed doping test​


Back-to-back NCAA champion Randolph Ross was booted from the world track and field championships on the eve of his 400-meter preliminary race, about a month after officials could not locate him to take an antidoping test. The Athletics Integrity Unit announced Saturday it was provisionally suspending the North Carolina A&T sprinter for tampering with the antidoping process after an unsuccessful testing attempt on June 18. The investigation concluded, the AIU said, after officials interviewed him Thursday. Ross won his second straight title in the 400 meters at NCAA championships earlier this year. His father, Duane, won a bronze medal in the 110 hurdles at the 1999 worlds.
