Biden awards Presidential Medal of Freedom to Ledecky, Thorpe​

Katie Ledecky, the most decorated women's swimmer in history, and Jim Thorpe, a multisport athlete who was the first Native American to win an Olympic gold medal for the United States, were among 19 people to be honored on Friday by President Joe Biden with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor. Others being honored for breakthrough achievements are "Everything Everywhere All at Once" actress Michelle Yeoh, who was the first Asian woman to win the Academy Award for Best Actress, and Ellen Ochoa, the first Hispanic woman in space.

The rapper on Monday revealed the new Snoop Dogg Arizona Bowl presented by Gin & Juice By Dre and Snoop, announcing his intent "to bring the juice back to college football." The game, previously sponsored by Barstool Sports, will take place Dec. 28 in Tucson, Arizona, and pair teams from the Mountain West and Mid-American conferences.

The first round of the 2024 NBA playoffs begins this Saturday and expect plenty of drama after a memorable regular season. Virginia, NC State to play non-ACC home-and-home football series​

ACC schools Virginia and NC State announced Wednesday they would play a home-and-home series in football that will not count as an official conference game. The schools will play in Raleigh, North Carolina, on Sept. 6, 2025, and in Charlottesville, Virginia, in 2026. This marks the second time in recent years that a pair of ACC rivals have scheduled a nonconference series. Wake Forest and North Carolina scheduled games in 2019 and 2021 to keep alive a longtime rivalry that had been off the regular league schedule following conference expansion.

Beginning in 2023, the ACC scrapped division play in an effort to have member schools play each other more frequently, but the league also expanded to 17 teams, adding SMU, Stanford and Cal for the 2024 season. Virginia and NC State have played each other 60 times since their first meeting in 1904, however the rivalry diminished in frequency beginning in 2005. They'd faced off just seven times since and weren't scheduled to play again until 2027.

NC State, Baylor, Texas headline 2025 Maui Invitational field​

North Carolina State, Baylor and Texas will be among the eight teams in the field for the 2025 Maui Invitational. The tournament field announced on Tuesday also will include Oregon, Seton Hall, Southern California, UNLV and host Chaminade. The tournament returns to the Lahaina Civic Center this November after being played in Honolulu last year following a series of fires that killed 101 people and decimated the historic town of Lahaina. The 2025 bracket will be played Nov. 24-26.

The anticipation is high as the four-time PGA Championship winner, Tiger Woods, prepares to grace the 2024 PGA Championship. His tee-off time is set for 8:04 am on Thursday, May 16, alongside Adam Scott and Keegan Bradley as he sets his sights on securing his fifth PGA Championship title. Woods, a paragon of resilience, has openly discussed the physical challenges that have occasionally hindered his golf game but has said he has made the physical accommodations to continue to play. Yet, Woods steadfastly asserts that he remains a formidable competitor, capable of holding his own against the league of best golfers. "Yeah, I can still hit shots," Woods shared candidly at a press conference at Valhalla Golf Club. "It's getting around is more of the difficulty that I face, day-to-day and the recovery of pushing myself either in practice or in competition days. You saw it at Augusta. I was there after two days and didn't do very well on the weekend." Woods won his first PGA Championship in 1999 at the age of 23 and then again in 2000, 2006, and 2007. 2024 NFL schedule features 9 playoff rematches, 2 in week 1​

Even though the Super Bowl rematch between the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers will not occur until almost the midpoint of the season, NFL fans will be treated to a pair of playoff rematches on the opening weekend. Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs begin their quest for an unprecedented third straight Super Bowl title when they host the Baltimore Ravens on Sept. 5 in the kickoff game, while the Los Angeles Rams are at the Detroit Lions in the Sunday night game on Sept. 8. The two playoff rematches in Week 1 are among nine on this year's regular-season schedule, which was released by the league Wednesday night. The Ravens-Chiefs matchup is a rematch of last season's AFC Championship Game, won by Kansas City 17-10. Kansas City heads to San Francisco on Oct. 20, after it defeated the 49ers 25-22 in the second overtime game in Super Bowl history. It also marks the second straight season the Chiefs will have a Super Bowl rematch after they lost to the Philadelphia Eagles in a Monday night game last season.

Kansas City will then travel to Buffalo on Nov. 17. The Rams' Mathew Stafford and Detroit's Jared Goff will face their former teams for the third time The rematch of the NFC Championship Game between the 49ers and Lions won't happen until Dec. 30. the Lions will host Tampa Bay on Sept. 15 in a rematch of a divisional-round game won by Detroit. The other playoff rematches are Baltimore at Houston on Christmas Day, Philadelphia at Tampa Bay on Sept. 29 and San Francisco at Green bay on Nov. 24. Including the kickoff game, "Thursday Night Football" and Thanksgiving, 14 teams will play multiple Thursday games. The league amended its policy last season to allow teams to make more than one appearance on Thursday nights.

The first international signee of Jake Paul's Most Valuable Promotions will debut on the undercard of Paul's July 20 showdown with Mike Tyson, officials confirmed with ESPN on Tuesday. India's Neeraj Goyat (18-4-2, 8 KOs) will compete for the first time under the MVP banner against Brazilian superstar Whindersson Nunes in a six-round super middleweight bout contested at 165 pounds. Goyat, 32, is the first Indian fighter to make the WBC world rankings and is recognized as one of the best boxers in the country. He utilized a social media campaign earlier this year in an effort to land a fight with Paul but instead found himself signing with Paul's promotion. Goyat has over a million followers on Instagram and has appeared on Indian television and Bollywood movies. Goyat -- a three-time WBC Asia titleholder -- has won nine of his last 10 fights, with his only loss coming to lightweight and super lightweight title contender Jose Zepeda. But it was his viral video that caught the attention of Paul when Goyat flew to Puerto Rico to challenge "The Problem Child" to a boxing match. The video has over 2 million likes on Instagram and led to the two potential rivals burying the hatchet and joining forces.

Oleksandr Usyk edges Tyson Fury by split decision, now undisputed​

There hadn't been an undisputed heavyweight champion since Lennox Lewis defeated Evander Holyfield in a rematch of all-time greats in November 1999 in Las Vegas. Halfway around the world -- and nearly 25 years later -- another undisputed champion in boxing's glamour division was crowned when Oleksandr Usyk floored Tyson Fury in Round 9 en route to a split decision victory early Sunday at sold-out Kingdom Arena. The wait was well worth it as both men delivered a fight befitting the prize they were competing for. One judge scored it 114-113 for Fury but was overruled by scores of 114-113 and 115-112 for Usyk, who handed the Englishman his first professional loss.

Usyk, who entered with the WBA, IBF and WBO belts, captured Fury's WBC title to become the first undisputed heavyweight champ in the four-belt era. He also became the lineal heavyweight champion, a title Fury had held since 2015 following an upset victory over Usyk's countryman, Wladimir Klitschko. The two-fight deal for this long-awaited matchup included a planned Oct. 12 rematch in Riyadh, where Fury will look to even the score and move on to a superfight with Anthony Joshua in the first quarter of 2025. Usyk (22-0, 14 KOs) needed four stitches to close a cut over his right eye, according to his promoter, K2 Promotions' Alexander Krassyuk.

Stanford beats UCLA to capture 3rd NCAA women's golf title​

Kelly Xu went undefeated in match play for the second straight year and the rest of Stanford followed her lead Wednesday, beating UCLA in the title match for its second NCAA championship in the three years. Rachel Heck delivered the final point in a 3-2 victory and the celebration was on for Stanford, the No. 1 team and the top seed going into match play. Stanford now has three NCAA titles in women's golf since it went to match play in 2015. UCLA also has three titles, all in stroke play, the most recent in 2011.

The Big 12 was joined later Tuesday by the ACC, whose presidents and chancellors voted to accept the antitrust settlements, including House v. NCAA.

NCAA board votes to accept antitrust settlement, sources say​

The NCAA's Board of Governors voted Wednesday evening to agree to settlement terms in the House v. NCAA and related antitrust cases, sources told ESPN, joining three power conferences thus far in moving forward with a historic change for the way college sports are operated.

The Big 12 and ACC voted to accept settlement terms Tuesday, and the Big Ten joined them Wednesday. The remaining two defendants named in the lawsuit -- the SEC and Pac-12 -- are expected to vote to approve the terms as well later this week. The NCAA's board did not vote unanimously Wednesday, a source told ESPN.

NCAA, Power 5 agree to deal that will let schools pay players​

The NCAA and its five power conferences have agreed to allow schools to directly pay players for the first time in the 100-plus-year history of college sports. The NCAA and its leagues are moving forward with a multibillion-dollar agreement to settle three pending federal antitrust cases. The NCAA will pay more than $2.7 billion in damages over 10 years to past and current athletes, sources told ESPN. Sources said the parties also have agreed to a revenue-sharing plan allowing each school to share up to roughly $20 million per year with its athletes. All Division I athletes dating back to 2016 are eligible to receive a share as part of the settlement class. In exchange, athletes cannot sue the NCAA for other potential antitrust violations and drop their complaints in three open cases -- House v. NCAA, Hubbard v. NCAA and Carter v. NCAA.
