SEC, ESPN strike 10-year deal for college football, basketball starting in 2024
Beginning in 2024, ABC will air an SEC game every week, including a regular late-afternoon kickoff, and will have the option to feature an SEC game on ABC's Saturday Night Football for the first time. "So Saturday night, prime time on ABC is the highest profile window, the biggest stage in terms of college football. And we love the fact that we can now bring the ABC platform into the mix, starting in 2024,'' Pitaro told The Associated Press.
 
Coastal Carolina Chanticleers break into top 10 of AP poll; Alabama still unanimous No. 1
The unbeaten Chanticleers (11-0), the first Sun Belt Conference team to crack the AP's top 10. Alabama has now been ranked in 211 consecutive polls, matching Florida State (1989-2001) for the second-longest streak in poll history.

Auburn Tigers fire football coach Gus Malzahn after eight seasons
Malzahn finished with a record of 68-34. He is owed $21.7 million, 50% of which is due in the first 30 days. The decision comes less than 24 hours after the Tigers finished the regular season with a 6-4 record.

Lovie Smith out as head football coach of Illinois Fighting Illini after 5 seasons
Smith, 62, went 17-39 (10-33 in the Big Ten) in five seasons at Illinois, his first stop in college football since 1995, when he coached defensive backs at Ohio State. Illinois finish their regular season at 2-5.

Virginia Tech Hokies opt to end nation's longest bowl streak at 27 years

Virginia Tech has opted out of a bowl game, ending the nation's longest bowl streak at 27 straight years. Coach Justin Fuente said Wednesday he met with the team, and the players decided they wanted to bypass any postseason opportunity.Virginia Tech finishes the season 5-6 and joins Boston College, Pitt, Virginia and Georgia Tech in the ACC in opting out of a bowl during the coronavirus pandemic. Virginia Tech was hit particularly hard by coronavirus issues throughout the season. Athletic director Whit Babcock estimated about three-quarters of the team contracted the virus since March, along with eight of 10 full-time assistants.

Stanford Cardinal stay atop AP Top 25 with top 11 unchanged

Stanford remained atop The Associated Press women's basketball poll released Monday and picked up first-place votes, too. Coach Tara VanDerveer matched Pat Summitt's all-time win total of 1,098 with a victory on Sunday night over California that kept Stanford unbeaten. She can move into sole possession of the record on Tuesday when her team faces Pacific.

Stanford coach Tara VanDerveer ties Pat Summitt's Division I record with 1,098th win

Stanford's Tara VanDerveer tied former Tennessee coach Pat Summitt for the most victories in Division I women's basketball, with 1,098, as the No. 1 Cardinal beat Cal 83-38 on Sunday in Berkeley, California. VanDerveer, 67, has gotten 946 of those wins at Stanford, where she took over in 1985-86. She coached before that at Idaho (42 wins from 1978 to '80) and Ohio State (110 from 1980 to '85). This victory, Stanford's fourth this season, came against one of VanDerveer's former Cardinal players, Cal coach Charmin Smith.VanDerveer, who has won two national championships, noted what an honor it is to be tied with Summitt, who died in 2016. Summitt spent her entire coaching career, beginning in 1974, at Tennessee before retiring in 2012 at age 59 following a diagnosis of early onset Alzheimer's disease.

FSU informed the league office Friday morning that a positive test and contact tracing would leave the team without enough offensive linemen to play the game. This is the third game this season Florida State has canceled within 24 hours of kickoff due to concerns over COVID-19.

Dino Babers returning for sixth season as head coach of Syracuse Orange football
In five seasons as head coach, Babers has led Syracuse to just one winning season, 10-3 in 2018. Since then, the Orange have been hurt by inconsistency on offense, particularly subpar play by the offensive line and at quarterback. That is especially troubling because Babers has an offensive background.
