Bluefield College forfeits NAIA men's basketball game after players suspended for kneeling during national anthem

An NAIA school in Virginia forfeited its men's basketball game Thursday after suspending players for kneeling during the national anthem before several games in January and February. In a statement Thursday, Bluefield College president David Olive said that after players knelt before multiple games in January and February, even after he'd told them to stop, he decided to suspend all athletes involved, which resulted in a forfeit of the NAIA Appalachian Athletic Conference game against Reinhardt. "The basis for my decision stemmed from my own awareness of how kneeling is perceived by some in our country, and I did not think a number of our alumni, friends, and donors of the College would view the act of kneeling during the anthem in a positive way," Olive said. In the statement, Olive, who is white, recounted an ongoing discussion with coaches, players and the school's athletic director, Tonia Walker, who is Black, over kneeling during the anthem, but suspensions were handed down only after media reports surfaced last week. Players again knelt during the anthem before their Feb. 2 game, ignoring the order. For the following game, on Feb. 4, Morgan kept the team in the locker room during the anthem to avoid further controversy. Olive said he reached out to Morgan and members of the team to discuss the protests, saying that he understood their message and supported calls for racial justice -- but he did not condone doing so during the national anthem.

Valparaiso dropping Crusaders name, mascot, logos

Valparaiso University announced Thursday that it is dropping the team name Crusaders, the school mascot and all logos associated with the term that it said has been embraced by hate groups. The decision comes after a decadeslong debate that had intensified recently because groups such as the Ku Klux Klan began using the symbols and words. The school's faculty and student senates each passed resolutions calling for the change and the university's alumni board of directors supported reassessing the appropriateness of the team name. The Crusades were a series of bloody religious wars starting in the 11th century between Christians and Muslims. For years, Valpo's mascot has been a helmeted figure in faux armor. "The negative connotation and violence associated with the Crusader imagery are not reflective of Valpo's mission and values, which promote a welcoming and inclusive community," interim president Colette Irwin-Knott said. "This is the decision that best reflects our values and community." President-elect Jose D. Padilla will oversee a committee that will consider adopting a new team name and mascot for the 3,100-student, Lutheran school located in northwest Indiana. Padilla is scheduled to take over as president March 1."Valpo is and always has been a faith-based institution, and we want to make sure our symbolism is in alignment with our beliefs and speaks to the core values of the Lutheran ethos," she said. "At Valpo, we strive to seek truth, serve generously and cultivate hope. We do not believe having the Crusader as our mascot portrays these values."

Gonzaga Bulldogs edge out fellow unbeaten Baylor Bears for No. 1 seed in early bracket reveal

Gonzaga was the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA men's basketball selection committee's mock bracket reveal on Saturday afternoon, edging out fellow unbeaten Baylor. The Bulldogs and Bears have been atop the rankings since the first week of the season, and they're the final two undefeated teams remaining in college basketball. They're also the top two teams in the NCAA Evaluation Tool (NET), as well as nearly every metric. Gonzaga has one more Quadrant 1 win than Baylor, giving the Zags the edge right now. "To no one's surprise, these two teams are considered the best of the best," said Mitch Barnhart, director of athletics at the University of Kentucky and chair of the committee. "Gonzaga and Baylor have been dominant teams to this point, and while there's no reason to think that won't continue, the beauty of college basketball is that anything can happen on a given night."

UConn the new No. 1, South Carolina falls to No. 2 in AP women's basketball poll

UConn is back in a familiar spot: at No. 1 in The Associated Press women's college basketball poll. For the ninth consecutive season, the Huskies have reached the pinnacle of the women's AP Top 25, receiving 26 first-place votes from a 30-member national media panel Monday. Coach Geno Auriemma's team beat previous No. 1 South Carolina in overtime a week ago in a 1-vs.-2 matchup. The Gamecocks fell one spot to second in the poll. They received two first-place votes. This is the third consecutive week there has been a different No. 1 team in the poll. That hadn't happened since 2012-13, when Stanford, UConn and Baylor each took a turn in the top spot. There haven't been four straight weeks with different No. 1s since 2004. Louisville, North Carolina State and Texas A&M round out the top five teams. The Aggies flipped places with Stanford. Texas A&M (19-1) has gone 7-0 against ranked teams this year.

Gonzaga, Baylor sit atop men's basketball Top 25; Big Ten rounds out top five

The voters in The Associated Press men's college basketball poll are lined up with the committee that will select the NCAA tournament field when it comes to which five teams are the nation's best. Agreeing on the order beyond that isn't as simple. Top-ranked Gonzagz and No. 2 Baylor remained atop Monday's latest AP Top 25, where they have been for all 13 polls this season. And after Illnois rose one spot to No. 5, that put the top of the AP poll in sync with the intial ranking of the top 16 seeds released Saturday by the NCAA Division I men's basketball committee.
