It's already time to start thinking about SEC football in 2021. While the 2020 season ended just recently, next season's schedules have been unveiled, so it's time to start breaking down your team's slate and projecting wins and losses.
Even in a 2020 college football season that featured more starts and stops than Los Angeles traffic, there were a handful of near certainties, such as Alabama, Clemson and Ohio State reaching the College Football Playoff. Even a pandemic couldn't balance power in the most top-heavy sport. Will we finally see those heavyweights fall back in 2021? Clemson star quarterback Trevor Lawrence has already declared for the NFL draft. Will Alabama's Max Jones and Ohio State's Justin Fields be next? Will it be enough for programs such as Georgia, North Carolina and Texas A&M to close the gap on teams that have dominated their conferences for much of the past decade? Michigan's Hunter Dickinson among 3 new players added to men's basketball Wooden Award watch list
Michigan star freshman Hunter Dickinson was one of three new names added to the updated watch list for the 2021 Wooden Award, which was also reduced from 25 players to 20 on Monday. Dickinson has been a revelation for a Michigan team that is an impressive 13-1 and finds itself atop the rugged Big Ten as February begins. The 7-foot-1 native of Alexandria, Virginia, leads the Wolverines with 15.1 points, 7.2 rebounds and 1.4 blocks per game on the season, while shooting 68.8% from the field. Also added to Monday's Wooden revision were Pittsburgh forward Justin Champagnie, who leads the ACC in both points (20.1 per game) and rebounds (12.1 per game), as well as Houston guard Quentin Grimes, the former Kansas transfer who has the Cougars in the top five on the strength of his 16.8 points per game.
Former USC assistant Todd McNair to get new trial in defamation case vs. NCAA dating back to Reggie Bush investigation
A California Court of Appeals on Friday affirmed a lower court's order for a new trial in former USC assistant coach Todd McNair's long-standing defamation lawsuit against the NCAA, which found that he violated ethical conduct rules during its investigation into whether former Trojans star Reggie Bush received improper benefits while playing in college. A three-judge panel of the Second Appellate District in Los Angeles denied the NCAA's appeal of the trial court's declaratory judgment and its order granting McNair's motion for a new trial. The appeals court also ordered the NCAA to bear the costs of the appeal. "We hold that the trial court did not abuse its discretion in finding insufficient evidence to justify the verdict on falsity," the appeals court ruling said. "Accordingly, we affirm the new trial order and do not address the NCAA's challenge to the declaratory judgment." McNair is in his second season as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' running backs coach and will coach against the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LV on Sunday. In January 2019, Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Frederick Shaller issued an order for a new trial, citing insufficient evidence to justify the original verdict and implied bias from a juror. In May 2019, a jury in Los Angeles ruled in favor of the NCAA following a three-week defamation trial stemming from McNair's involvement in the Bush extra benefits scandal.
