Natasha Jonas, Patricia Berghult to fight in unification bout Sept. 3 in Liverpool

WBO junior middleweight champion Natasha Jonas and WBC titleholder Patricia Berghult will fight in a unification title bout on Sept. 3 in Liverpool, England. Jonas (11-2-1, 8 KO) was the first British woman boxer to compete in the Olympics and will be making the first defense of her WBO belt, which she won by knocking out Chris Namus in the second round in February. Her February win had been her third world title fight in her past four fights, having had a draw with Terri Harper at junior lightweight and then losing to Katie Taylor by unanimous decision for Taylor's undisputed lightweight titles last year. Berghult (15-0, 3 KO) will also be making the first defense of her WBC belt, which she won last November in a unanimous decision win over Olivia Belkacem. Berghult was initially supposed to fight former pound-for-pound No. 1 fighter Cecilia Braekhus this month, but the entire card was postponed last month.

Bill Russell's No. 6 to be retired across NBA following legend's death last month

The NBA will honor the legacy of Boston Celtics legend Bill Russell by retiring his No. 6 jersey for all 30 teams, the league and the National Basketball Players Association announced Thursday. Russell becomes the first player in NBA history to have his jersey retired leaguewide. Additionally, all NBA players will wear a commemorative patch on the right shoulder of their jerseys during the 2022-23 season, and every court will display a shamrock-shaped logo with Russell's No. 6 on the sideline near the scorer's table. Starting with the 2022-23 season, no NBA team will be allowed to issue No. 6 to any player. Players who currently wear No. 6 -- such as Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James may continue to do so. According to Basketball Reference, 25 players, including James, Kristaps Porzingis, Alex Caruso, Montrezl Harrell and Lou Williams, wore No. 6 last season. Russell remains second all time in NBA history in rebounds (21,620) and rebounds per game (22.5). He is also the leading rebounder in NBA postseason history with 4,104 total boards and 24.9 rebounds per game.

Serena Williams loses 2nd-round match in Toronto after indicating playing career is winding down

Serena Williams wore her game face when she stepped out into the stadium for her first match since telling the world she is ready to leave professional tennis. Greeted by a standing ovation, the 23-time Grand Slam champion didn't smile. She didn't wave. She took a sip from a plastic bottle as she walked in. Some folks in the crowd captured the moment with the cameras on their cellphones. Others held aloft hand-drawn signs -- oh, so many signs -- with messages such as "Queen'' or "Thank you.'' She did not state precisely what her last event will be, but did make it sound as if her final farewell will come at the US Open, which begins Aug. 29 in New York. Williams has won the singles title at Flushing Meadows a half-dozen times -- first in 1999; most recently in 2014 -- to go along with seven championships apiece at Wimbledon and the Australian Open, plus three at the French Open.

Former heavyweight titleholder Deontay Wilder and Robert Helenius are in the process of finalizing a deal for a PBC on FOX pay-per-view fight Oct. 15 at Brooklyn's Barclays Center, sources confirmed to ESPN. Wilder (42-2-1, 41 KOs) contemplated retirement following a brutal 11th-round loss to Tyson Fury in their October 2021 bout that was named ESPN's Fight of the Year. The 36-year-old will finally face a different opponent for the first time since November 2019, following two consecutive inside-the-distance defeats to Fury. Tyson Fury offers to fight Anthony Joshua for free, on free TV, with free tickets for fans
Tyson Fury announced his retirement in April, but it doesn't appear the heavyweight champion's hiatus will last long. Since Fury's sixth-round TKO win over Dillian Whyte in April in London, "The Gypsy King" has repeatedly flip-flopped between expressing his desire to fight again and remain retired.

Earlier this summer, Fury (32-0-1, 23 KOs) claimed the only way he would come out of retirement is for a $500 million purse.

Tyson Fury to 'walk away' from boxing after short-lived comeback flirtation

Tyson Fury has decided to "walk away" from boxing, only three days after saying he was returning to the sport. Fury turned 34 on Friday and posted a message on social media saying. "Massive thanks to everyone who had an input in my career over the years & after long hard conversations (I've finally) decided to walk away & on my 34th birthday I say Bon voyage. "That seemingly puts Fury back into retirement, after he announced on Tuesday that he was returning to boxing in order to set up a fight against Derek Chisora, a fellow Briton whom he beat twice early in his career.
