Alphas

The pilot episode was pretty good. I wasn't planning to watch it, because SyFy cancels good shows, and if it was good I didn't want to be into it AND STUFF.. but there wasn't anything else worth watching and I ended up on the SyFy channel AGAINST MY WILL.

I like the actors, and the premise and all that, so I'll be watching it for now. If you guys are in need of a decent science fiction show to dl, I think you should give it a shot.

About | Alphas | Syfy

Alphas is an action-packed thriller from writers Zak Penn (The Avengers, X-Men: The Last Stand) and Michael Karnow. In the series, five ordinary people are brought together to form one extraordinary team of Alphas -- people with the unique power to stretch the capabilities of the human mind giving them superhuman physical and mental abilities.

Operating within the Defense Criminal Investigation Service of the U.S. Department of Defense and led by preeminent neurologist and psychiatrist Dr. Lee Rosen (Emmy Award-winner and Academy Award-nominee David Strathairn), an expert in Alpha phenomena, the team investigates cases that point to others with Alpha abilities. As they work against the clock to solve this new brand of crime, they must prevent their own personality differences and disparate backgrounds from interfering with their ultimate mission to catch the enemy.

In addition to Academy Award nominee David Strathairn (Temple Grandin, Good Night, and Good Luck), the ensemble cast stars Malik Yoba (New York Undercover, Why Did I Get Married?), Warren Christie (October Road), Laura Mennell (Watchmen), Ryan Cartwright (Mad Men, Bones) and Azita Ghanizada (Castle).

They call them "five ordinary people" but they're not ordinary, they each have some special power... I wouldn't exactly call them super powers (like flying or somethign), but one guy can be really strong if he squeezes his fists and starts sweating, the hot girl can sort of hypnotize people and get them to do what she wants, the Asperger's kid (of course) can see electromagnetic transmissions like a computer all around him, the cute Mexican girl can see, hear, smell.. THINGS from great distances or up close she can see things like smells hard to explain, the hot baseball player can shoot or throw with great accuracy and seems to be extra strong and dexterous. ALSO Leoban was in the pilot, and maybe he'll be in the series.

Leoban? Hmmmm...

It sounds like X-Men meets Wanted, but I like David Straihan, so I'll give it a whirl.

OH and I liked the way the show looked, good effects, good production quality STUFF LIKE THAT.

Well, the production values are better than Sanctuary, which is all green screen. I enjoy Sanctuary a lot, even with the hokier effects.

Good premise, quality acting, decent special effects and production values? And it's on SyFy? Well sounds like it has "cancelled" written all over it, but there's not much else on so I'll give it a go until it's abruptly wrenched from broadcast.

I was all set to watch it last night but exhaustion overcame me. The 5 minutes I DID see looked really good, and I look forward to finishing it tonight.

Just finished watching it and really enjoyed it. I guess it's got a bit of Fringe and a bit of Heroes, with some Numb3rs thrown in, but it doesn't really feel like it's copying anything else on purpose. The characters are all pretty interesting and believable and well acted, especially Gary. I recognise him from some British kids shows from when I was growing up and looks like he did a lot of research into Aspergery mannerisms. Always good to see CKR (yes, I think he deserves an acronym now) in things too.

Will be watching more.

Ok, as if to confirm that they're all utter dullards, everyone on IMDb hates Gary aka "the retarted kid".

People are shit.

OH, that's awful! I thought he was great, and the actor did a great job ALSO.

I thought it was OK. The premise was good, and I like the character of Cameron. And of course David Strathairn is always excellent. But Malik Yoba isn't a very good actor, and I feel like the pilot didn't do enough with the premise. I can't put my finger on it, but something was just a bit mediocre about it.

Regardless, I'll give it another couple of episodes for sure.

Yes, there was a slightly mediocre touch to it, but there does tend to be in those SyFy channel shows that are set in NY, but mostly filmed in Canada.
