Panthers QB Cam Newton says 'Charlotte is home'
The 2015 NFL MVP did not take questions about his future from reporters attending his event, but the Atlanta native made it clear he hopes to be here beyond the last year of his contract in 2020. "Charlotte is home,'' Newton said. Tepper made it clear last week that a decision on Newton's future with the team hasn't been made and the first priority was getting the first pick of the 2011 draft healthy.

Source: Panthers DT Dontari Poe to have surgery for torn quad
The 11th pick of the 2011 draft by Kansas City, Poe had four sacks this season, two shy of his career high for the Chiefs in 2014. The two-time Pro Bowl selection anchored the middle of Carolina's 3-4 defense that ranks second in the NFL in sacks with 41, three behind San Francisco.

Cam Newton breaks silence with media as questions about his future with the Panthers continue to swirl

It's now been more than two months since the last time we saw Cam Newton on the field for the Carolina Panthers, and not so coincidentally, it's also been more than two months since the last time Newton spoke with the media. With just one year left on his contract, Newton's status with the Panthers is completely up the in the air. CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason La Canfora reported in early November that the team is "unsure" about giving him a new deal. La Canfora has also reported that new Panthers owner David Tepper has been frustrated with what he's seen on the field, which could lead to a complete overhaul of the Panthers' coaching staff and front office. When it comes to Newton, the Panthers are going to have three options: They can keep him, they can cut him or they can trade him. Based on his comments on Monday, it sounds like the Panthers quarterback would like to stay in Charlotte for the foreseeable future.

Newton, who was placed on injured reserve in November, also added that he's felt supported during his time away from the team. As for Newton's future, the Panthers will have a lot to consider this offseason. After the 2019 season, Newton will have only have one year left on his contract, which is a deal the Panthers could look to unload. The Panthers can save a total of $19 million in cap space if they decide to cut him or trade him away this season, which is why both of those options could make sense (Although trading him would make a lot more sense than cutting him). One of the reasons the Panthers have been hesitant to commit to him for the long term is because he's been battling multiple injuries. Not only is he dealing with a foot issue that will eventually cause him to miss 14 games this season, but he also missed two games last year due to a shoulder injury.

The good news for Newton is that he still has the support of the owner, which could help pave the way for him to stay with the Panthers if that's what both sides decide they want to do.

The Panthers waived defensive back Rashaan Gaulden on Monday. The move came less than 24 hours after he ran into punt returner DJ Moore and had the football bounce off his foot to set up New Orleans' second touchdown in a 34-31 loss. He was a third-round pick in 2018 that never made a name for himself as a safety.

Panthers coach Ron RIvera said the staff will discuss whether to bring in kickers for a tryout after Joey Slye missed two extra points and a potential game-winning 28-yard field goal in Sunday's 34-31 loss to New Orleans. “It is about going out and doing your job, and Joey is well aware of that,'' Rivera said.

Panthers DT Dontari Poe (knee) and LG Greg Van Roten (toe) will have MRIs today. There is concern both could be serious injuries.

The Panthers signed kicker Greg Joseph to their practice squad. The move came after Joey Skye missed two extra points and a 28-yard field goal in Sunday's 34-31 loss to New Orleans. Joseph made 85% of his field goals with the Browns last season.

Panthers owner David Tepper made an appearance at Cam Newton's Thanksgiving Jam. His wife Nicole is here serving the more than 1,300 kids at the largest ever of Newton's annual event. Newton said the ‘'unwavering support'' has meant a lot.

Saints beat Falcons to clinch third straight NFC South title

Taysom Hill's rare moment in the spotlight came in an important game for the New Orleans Saints. Hill blocked a punt to set up his 3-yard touchdown catch before scoring again on a 30-yard run, and the New Orleans Saints clinched their third straight NFC South title by beating the Atlanta Falcons 26-18 on Thursday night. The Saints (10-2) atoned for their 26-9 home loss to the Falcons on Nov. 10, their only defeat in the last 10 games.

Good news for the Panthers on the inactives is right tackle Taylor Moton isn't on the list. Coach Ron Rivera indicated on Friday Moton would be a go, so not a big surprise. But with LT Greg Little inactive the depth on the line already was thin. So look for Dennis Daley to start at LT and Moton at RT.

The Panthers likely will be without left tackle Greg Little (ankle), listed as doubtful for Sunday's game against Washington. Right tackle Taylor Moton (knee) is questionable but it looks like he could play. Running back Jordan Scarlett has been placed on IR. Mike Davos will be active.

The Panthers may be all but out of playoff contention but still a lot of individual milestones to reach. Christian McCaffrey is 15 receiving yards shy of passing Roger Craig (2,118) for the most by a running back in his first three seasons. He needs to average 160.2 yards from scrimmage over the final five games to break Chris Johnson's record (2,509) set in 2009. Wide receiver DJ Moore is 95 receiving yards shy of his first 1,000-yard season.

Greg Olsen concussed; Ryan Anderson ejected
Olsen entered the day third on the team in receptions with 45 for 530 yards and two touchdowns. He had two catches for 14 yards against Washington. Carolina went on to lose its fourth straight, 29-21, to fall to 5-7 and increase speculation that owner David Tepper will fire coach Ron Rivera after the season. They are now 12-16 since Tepper purchased the team prior to the 2018 season for and NFL-record $2.275 billion.

Why Ron Rivera should be worried about his job
There’s no doubt Rivera is a good coach. He took the Panthers to the playoffs three straight years (2013-2015) and three times in four years through 2017. He won the NFL Coach of the Year twice (2013, 2015). He is the winningest coach in team history with a 76-63-1 record. But most of the margin keeping him above .500 was built during a 15-1 2015 season. He’s had only three winning seasons in his eight, three out of nine if this one doesn’t turn around.
