DE Chris Smith resuming NFL career with Panthers after girlfriend's death

Smith's girlfriend, Petara Cordero, was struck and killed by a driver on Interstate 90 in Cleveland. She had been a passenger in Smith's 2019 Lamborghini and exited the vehicle when it had a tire malfunction and hit the median.

Smith, 28, started two games for the Browns in 2018, but compiled only one tackle in eight games following Cordero's death. The Browns released him on Dec. 3.

The Panthers are trading five-time Pro Bowl guard Trai Turner to the Chargers for two-time Pro Bowl offensive tackle Russell Okung, league sources tell ESPN's Adam Schefter. The trade is agreed to and cannot be processed until March 18.‬ This fills A big need for Carolina before free agency or the draft.

Former Browns DL Chris Smith is signing a 1-year deal with his hometown team, the Panthers, per source. Good for him. Smith's girlfriend and the mother of one of his children was killed in September after being struck by a passing car after exiting Smith's car.

Former Panthers linebacker Thomas Davis and wide receiver Ted Ginn Jr. are buying the Charlotte Thunder, an arena football team formerly known as the Carolina Energy. Davis and Ginn were key pieces to Carolina's run to Super Bowl 50. Davis will go down as one of the greatest players in team history. The league starts in April.

The Panthers have expressed interest in re-signing DE Mario Addison but the 32-year-old plans to test the free agent market, per league sources. Doesn't mean the two sides won't find a common ground. Addison has 39 sacks the past four years, more than any other Carolina player.

The Panthers signed QB Kyle Allen, who was set to become an exclusive rights free agent, to a one-year deal. Good move for depth. Allen started 12 games last season and went 5-7. Carolina now has three QBs under contract in Allen, Will Grier and Cam Newton.

Panthers officially limit travel for coaches and scouts until further notice. Decision was made after several team officials attended pro days on Thursday, including at least two at Clemson where many players, coaches and scouts greeted each other with fist and elbow bumps.

Panthers add DL Stephen Weatherly; S Juston Burris, source says
Weatherly, 25, is the type of player the Panthers are looking for as they rebuild their entire roster under new coach Matt Rhule in that he's a young, up-and-comer who doesn't come with a high price tag. Burris fills a need and comes at a low price tag. His signing probably means the Panthers will move on from safety Tre Boston, also a free agent.

Panthers near Teddy Bridgewater deal; Cam Newton unhappy

On the same day the Carolina Panthers gave Cam Newton permission to seek a trade that he says he didn't ask for, the team is finalizing details for a contract with free-agent quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, a source told ESPN's Chris Mortensen. The contract would run for three seasons and average around $20 million per year, the source said. It is not completed but is expected to be done by the time the new league year begins Wednesday. That news came after Newton responded to the team's post on Instagram saying that he could seek a trade. Bridgewater has been a hot commodity since he had a strong showing while filling in for the injured Drew Brees in New Orleans last season. Bridgewater went 5-0 as a starter, saving a promising season. New Panthers offensive coordinator Joe Brady worked with Bridgewater during his two years as an offensive assistant with the Saints before taking over as LSU's passing game coordinator last year.

Newton, who will turn 31 in May, continues to rehab from foot surgery that was performed in December. His rehab has gone well and a league source told ESPN that he was on track to fully participate in a June minicamp before the coronavirus pandemic forced the NFL to suspend offseason programs. Newton was the NFL MVP in 2015 when he led the Panthers to the Super Bowl, a 24-10 loss to Denver. The Panthers have been to the playoffs only once since then, a wild-card loss to the Saints in 2017. Newton, who holds most of Carolina's career passing records, missed 14 games last season with the Lisfranc injury and the final two games of the 2018 season with a shoulder injury that also required surgery. The Panthers are in a rebuilding mode under new coach Matt Rhule. In addition to Olsen, they have parted ways with Pro Bowl right guard Trai Turner.

Panthers give Teddy Bridgewater $63M deal; Cam Newton unhappy
Bridgewater is 22-12 as a starter. That's the seventh-best winning percentage among quarterbacks with at least 30 starts since 2014, Bridgewater's rookie year. The deal with Bridgewater assures the Panthers will move on from Newton even if a trade can't be arranged. Carolina will create $19.1 million in cap space if it trades or releases Newton.

Tre Boston returns to Panthers on 3-year, $18M deal
Boston, 27, started 16 games in 2019 after signing with the Panthers just over a month before the start of the season. He finished with 68 tackles, 3 interceptions and 11 passes defensed. Boston played the 2017 season with the Chargers and in 2018 with the Cardinals on one-year contracts. He has 334 tackles, 14 interceptions, 38 passes defensed and 2 sacks in six NFL seasons.

Details of Teddy Bridgewater's contract with the Panthers via ESPN's Dan Graziano via a league source: 3 years, $63 million, $40 million guaranteed first two years, $15M signing bonus. 2020: $8M salary (full guarantee), $250K workout bonus, up to $750K in per-game roster bonus; 2021: $17M salary (full guarantee), $250K workout bonus, up to $750K in per-game roster bonuses; 2022: $20M salary, $245K workout bonus, up to $750K in per-game roster bonuses.

The ONLY real leverage the Panthers have in trading Cam Newton is his relatively low $21.1 million cap hit for 2020. Otherwise, no team has incentive to offer draft picks or players because they know Newton will be released if there are no takers. So don't expect Carolina to pick up anything substantial in terms of draft picks here.

Recapping Panthers' first two days of free agency -- Additions: QB Teddy Bridgewater, FS Tre Boston, S Juston Burris, DE Stephen Weatherly. Subtractions: QB Cam Newton (TBD), CB James Bradberry (NY Giants), DE Mario Addison (Buffalo), DT Vernon Butler (Buffalo).

The Panthers will have no further comment on Cam Newton despite the quarterback saying he was "forced'' into the position of seeking a trade.

Panthers release veteran safety Eric Reid
The Panthers initially signed Reid early in the 2018 season. He had been unsigned after joining Kaepernick in filing a grievance stating that the NFL and its owners colluded to prevent their employment because of their protest. The moves continue to signal the complete overhaul of the roster under Rhule, who was hired from Baylor because of his reputation for turning around college programs. Carolina will take a $5 million hit in dead money this season by releasing Reid.

The Panthers added depth at tight end, agreeing to terms with Seth DeValve, who caught 12 passes for 140 yards at Jacksonville last season. Originally a fourth-round pick by the Browns in 2016, the former Princeton standout has 60 career catches for 736 yards and four touchdowns. The Panthers are rebuilding the TE spot after moving on from Pro Bowler Greg Olsen, although DeValve appears more of an add for competition.

The Panthers signed wide receiver Pharoh Cooper on a one-year deal. A fourth-round draft pick of the Rams in 2016, Cooper earned All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors in 2017 as a returner with 932 yards and a touchdown on 34 kickoff returns to go with 399 yards on 32 punt returns. Will fill a need as a return specialist at the very least.

Panthers owner David Tepper through the David A. Tepper Charitable Foundation and Bank of America each announced Thursday that they are donating $1 million apiece to the COVID-19 Response Fund, a community-wide effort to assist those affected by the coronavirus pandemic. The fund has collected more than $7.8 million in donations in just four days.

Reality, the Panthers likely will release quarterback Cam Newton soon because no team is going to trade for the 2015 NFL MVP without a personal workout and complete bill of health, and that can't be done. Plus, Carolina needs to clear Newton off the books as soon as new QB Teddy Bridgewater passes his physical and his deal becomes official. “In talk of value, there's nothing there,'' NFL Hall of Fame executive Bill Polian told ESPN.com about why Newton release seems inevitable.
