The Panthers added depth at tight end, agreeing to terms with Seth DeValve, who caught 12 passes for 140 yards at Jacksonville last season. Originally a fourth-round pick by the Browns in 2016, the former Princeton standout has 60 career catches for 736 yards and four touchdowns. The Panthers are rebuilding the TE spot after moving on from Pro Bowler Greg Olsen, although DeValve appears more of an add for competition.

The Panthers signed wide receiver Pharoh Cooper on a one-year deal. A fourth-round draft pick of the Rams in 2016, Cooper earned All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors in 2017 as a returner with 932 yards and a touchdown on 34 kickoff returns to go with 399 yards on 32 punt returns. Will fill a need as a return specialist at the very least.

Panthers owner David Tepper through the David A. Tepper Charitable Foundation and Bank of America each announced Thursday that they are donating $1 million apiece to the COVID-19 Response Fund, a community-wide effort to assist those affected by the coronavirus pandemic. The fund has collected more than $7.8 million in donations in just four days.

Reality, the Panthers likely will release quarterback Cam Newton soon because no team is going to trade for the 2015 NFL MVP without a personal workout and complete bill of health, and that can't be done. Plus, Carolina needs to clear Newton off the books as soon as new QB Teddy Bridgewater passes his physical and his deal becomes official. “In talk of value, there's nothing there,'' NFL Hall of Fame executive Bill Polian told ESPN.com about why Newton release seems inevitable.

XFL star QB P.J. Walker to sign with Panthers
The 5-foot-11 Walker was one of the XFL's top players this season and led the Houston Roughnecks to a 5-0 record. He led the league in passing yards (1,338 yards) and touchdown passes (15).

He had 108 combined tackles last season, the fourth straight year he had more than 100. However, his 941 defensive snaps last season were the most in the NFL for any linebacker who failed to record a sack, an interception, a fumble recovery or a forced fumble, according to research by The Associated Press.

Sources: Panthers expected to release Newton

The Caroina Panthers are expected to release quarterback Cam Newton on Tuesday, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Newton's exit from the team after nine seasons wasn't unexpected.Carolina agreed to a three-year, $63 million deal with free- agent quarterback Teddy Bridgewater earlier this week, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter. At the same time, the Panthers gave Newton permission to seek a trade, although the QB responded by saying he didn't ask for that. "Stop with the word play. I never asked for it," he commented on social media. "There is no dodging this one. I love the Panthers to death and will always love you guys. Please do not try and play me or manipulate the narrative and act like I wanted this. You forced me into this."

Panthers release former No. 1 pick, NFL MVP Cam Newton
Releasing Newton saves the team $19.1 million in cap space with only $2 million in dead money. Newton passed the physical and is healthy, with both his shoulder and foot "checking out well," a source told Schefter. "He is hungrier than ever and eager for the next opportunity."

After declining the option on DT Dontari Poe the Panthers filled a need by signing former Cardinals DT Zach Kerr to a two-year deal. This adds a veteran presence beside Pro Bowler Kawann Short. Doesn't mean Carolina wouldn't take a DT like Auburn's Derrick Brown with the seventh pick of the draft. The Panthers also signed WR DeAndrew White to a one-year deal. More depth there.

New Panthers wide receiver Robby Anderson talked about new Carolina coach Matt Rhule the day after the 2019 season ended. Called him a great coach. Anderson flunked out of Temple and then returned there when Rhule was the coach from 2013-16. “He fought to get me back into Temple,'' Anderson said (via ESPN.com's Rich Cimini). "He believed in me. We didn't always see eye to eye, but I was young and stubborn.”

Less than a half hour after making quarterback Cam Newton's release official, the Panthers took some of the sting out of that decision by reaching a two-year, $20 million deal with Jets free agent wide receiver Robby Anderson. That gives the Panthers four former Temple players for new coach Matt Rhule, who coached Temple from 2013-16. Teaming Anderson with DJ Moore will make for a potent threat for new quarterback Teddy Bridgewater.

Panthers' rebuild could progress slower than 1995 expansion team
The Panthers moved on from Newton, tight end Greg Olsen, defensive end Mario Addison, defensive end Bruce Irvin, defensive tackle Gerald McCoy and safety Colin Jones, all of whom will be 30 or older before the 2020 season. They also released 28-year-old safety Eric Reid, and they didn’t spend the big bucks it would have taken to re-sign cornerback James Bradberry and guard Greg Van Roten.

Sources: CB James Bradberry seeks deal worth $15M or more per year
Bradberry believes his combination of size/speed (6-foot-1, 212 pounds), production (eight interceptions, 47 passes defended in four seasons) and pedigree covering top receivers in the NFC South will help his cause.

How a Joe Burrow-Joe Brady long shot reunion in Carolina could happen
Quarterback prospect Joe Burrow called his relationship with passing-game coordinator Joe Brady at LSU last season the “perfect fit from the very beginning" in his drive to the Heisman Trophy and the national championship. It might take the perfect storm for that relationship to continue in the NFL, as the 23-year-old quarterback is projected to go to the Cincinati Bengals with the top pick in April's NFL draft. Brady is the new offensive coordinator for the Carolina Panthers, who don't pick until No. 7.

Carolina Panthers New

Teddy Bridgewater says he hasn't heard from former Panthers quarterback Cam Newton since he was signed. But he reminds Newton had a great impact on him as a player growing up and talks about Newton with great respect. He laughed at the suggesting Carolina might tank this season, saying he is all about competing.

Carolina Panthers News

Carolina players already have been sent iPad-like devices so they virtually can begin offseason workouts with group sessions on Monday as the COVID-19 crisis continues. The Panthers are one of five NFL teams with new coaches that will begin offseason programs virtually. This is the alternative with most of the country bound to shelter-in-place orders.

It didn't take much for former New York Jets WR Robby Anderson to come to Carolina for a reunion with his college coach, Matt Rhule. “I know winning is in his blood,'' Anderson said. "I know that's what he's here to do. There wasn't much he had to sell me on. When I saw Teddy [Bridgewater] sign there it really was the icing on the cake. It really attracted me to want to be a Panther.''
