Atlanta (15) @ Carolina (25)

D'Onta Foreman admitted he was tired at times completely gassed. There wasn't a chance he was going to tap on his helmet and ask to take a breather. He's waited too long in his injury-plagued career for this opportunity. Foreman carried 31 times for 130 yards and a touchdown. Foreman's 31 carries were the most by a Carolina running back since Nick Goings' 36 in 2004. Eddy Pineiro kicked four field goals after he missed two critical kicks in a 37-34 overtime loss to the Falcons 11 days earlier. Carolina improved to 2/3 since coach Matt Rhule was fired and replaced on an interim basis by Steve Wilks. - The Falcons' Marcus Mariota finished 19 of 30 for 186 yards and two touchdowns, but was sacked five times and intercepted once.

Carolina Panthers stay alive in NFC South with win over Atlanta Falcons

Don't laugh, but the Carolina Panthers remain relevant in the NFC South. As bad as they've been, the division has been nearly as bad and is winnable for a team that is 3-7 after Thursday night's victory over the Falcons. Carolina is only a game-and-a-half behind first-place Tampa Bay (4-5), a team it has already beaten. It's only a game behind Atlanta (4-6) with a 1-1 record against the Falcons. And consider, the Panthers have the best division record (3-1) and their remaining schedule is the 27th toughest in the NFL. New Orleans' schedule is the seventh toughest and the Bucs' is 22nd. Again, don't laugh. In 2014, a 3-8-1 Carolina team won its final four to win the South and then a playoff game. The Panthers topped 169 yards rushing for the third time in five games since trading star running back Christain McCaffrey after a Week 6 loss to the Los Angeles Rams.

He's the right man for the job'...Panthers players buying into interim coach Steve Wilks

So far, Wilks has won enough rounds to keep the Panthers (3-7) in the fight to remain relevant in the NFC South, where they trail the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (5-5) by two games. He has also won over a locker room that for the most part remained loyal to Rhule when Tepper fired him after a 1-4 start. This is where Wilks’ presence with the offense has had the biggest impact and could help Mayfield in his return. His commitment to the run has taken pressure off the line in its pass-blocking. The Panthers have averaged 29.8 rushes per game and 146.2 yards rushing under Wilks. They averaged 20.6 rushes per game and 89.8 rushing yards under Rhule.

NFL referees penalize Black players for celebrating far more than white players
Recent flag on Carolina Panthers receiver DJ Moore was not an aberration.

When Carolina Panthers wide receiver DJ Moore was penalized for excitedly removing his helmet after catching a game-tying Hail Mary pass in the closing seconds of the fourth quarter against Atlanta two weeks ago, it was unfortunate on a number of levels. The 15-yard penalty led to a missed extra point attempt and ultimately a loss in overtime. The referees got it wrong and never should have flagged Moore, who was outside the end zone when he took off his helmet. And perhaps most disturbing, the penalty was part of a pattern in which Black players in the NFL are disproportionately penalized for “excessive” celebrations.

An Andscape examination of data on unsportsmanlike conduct penalties found that since 2018, 19 out of 21 90% of the flags for celebrating have gone against Black players, who along with biracial athletes make up 68% of NFL rosters. Only 9% of the calls were on white players, who are 25% of the league. But video showed that Moore was out of the end zone and therefore allowed to remove his helmet.

The researchers found 13 incidents of unsportsmanlike penalties called after touchdowns for the two seasons of study. Twelve, or 92%, were called on Black players, even though during that same period white players such as Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers (see the La beau Leap, for instance) were also celebrating without being flagged.

Carolina (3) @ Baltimore (13)

The AFC North-leading Ravens won their fourth straight despite being stuck in neutral offensively for much of the game. Jackson threw for 209 yards with an interception and Demarcus Robinson caught nine passes for 128 yards, but that was about all that was working for either team offensively on a chilly, windy day in Baltimore. Baltimore had rushed for at least 150 yards in eight consecutive games, the longest streak since the 1985 Chicago Bears did it for nine straight. Carolina held the Ravens to 115 yards on 30 carries. - The Panthers have not won a road game in more than a year, since Nov. 14, 2021, when they defeated Arizona. They're 0-5 this season. Mayfield, a familiar opponent for the Ravens when he was with Cleveland, threw for 196 yards for the Panthers (3-8). D'Onta Foreman was held to 24 yards on 11 carries after rushing for 389 and four touchdowns in the previous four games.

Panthers name Sam Darnold starter vs. Broncos

In the revolving door known as the Carolina Panthers quarterback position, Sam Darnold will become the team's third different starter in as many weeks Sunday against the Denver Broncos at Bank of America Stadium. The team made the announcement Tuesday after interim coach Steve Wilks told his quarterbacks he will go with Darnold instead of Baker Mayfield, who had two passes intercepted and failed to get the Panthers (3-8) into the end zone in Sunday's 13-3 loss to the Baltimore Ravens. Darnold was 4-7 as the starter last season and had a Total QBR of 38.6 that ranked ahead of only those of Zach Wilson (33.4) of the New York Jets and Justin Fields (31.4) of the Chicago Bears. Mayfield was the first pick of the 2018 draft and Darnold the third.

Denver (10) @ Carolina (23)

Sam Darnold has been waiting more than 10 months for another chance to prove he can lead the Carolina Panthers. It finally came on Sunday, and he made the most of it. Darnold completed 11 of 19 passes for 164 yards without a turnover in his first game since losing the starting job to Baker Mayfield in training camp and then suffering a high ankle sprain in the preseason. He's the third QB to start this season for the Panthers, joining Mayfield and P.J. Walker. The Panthers finished with 185 yards on the ground, getting 113 on 24 carries from D'Onta Foreman, his fourth 100-yard rushing performance in the last six games.

Denver came in with the worst scoring offense in the league and didn’t find the end zone until a 1-yard TD pass by Wilson with 3:24 left in the game, a performance sure to turn up the heat even more on embattled first-year coach Nathaniel Hackett. Carolina's defense limited Russell Wilson to 19 of 35 passing for 142 yards and sacked him three times, sending the Broncos (3-8) to their seventh loss in eight games.
