Panthers waive struggling QB Baker Mayfield

The Carolina Panthers waived quarterback Baker Mayfield on Monday. Carolina (4-8) is still in contention in the weak NFC South and will go the rest of the season with Sam Darnold and PJ Walker at quarterback, with Darnold starting Sunday's road game against the Seattle Seahawks. With the move, Mayfield will be available on waivers to the other 31 NFL teams. If he goes unclaimed by 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday, he will become an unrestricted free agent. Mayfield won the starting job in training camp after an open competition with Darnold, the third pick of the 2018 draft. He went 1-4 before suffering a high ankle sprain that sidelined him for one game. He remained the backup to Walker while Darnold continued to rehab from a high ankle sprain suffered in the final preseason game.

What's next for Baker Mayfield after being released by Panthers?

When the the Carolina Panthers agreed in July to send a conditional 2024 draft pick to the Cleveland Browns for quarterback Baker Mayfield, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2018 NFL draft, they were hoping to resurrect his career. The renaissance didn't happen, and it wasn't even close. Mayfield went 1-5 as the starter and was on target for career lows in every major statistical category, including a 16.8 Total QBR that ranked last in the league. That led to his release on Monday, with the Panthers (4-8) set to go with Sam Darnold and PJ Walker as their top quarterbacks for the rest of the season. The Panthers agreed to pay $4.858 million of Mayfield's $18.8 2022 salary when they traded for him. Mayfield agreed to take a $3.5 million cut on the remainder of his salary with incentives in his contract to earn that back. He never came close to reaching those, and he'll be a free agent during the offseason.

Revisiting Panthers' unlikely 2014 playoff run: Can they do it again in weak NFC South?

In 2014, the Carolina Panthers came off their bye week with had five games left in the season. Every team in the NFC South had a losing record and Carolina’s got worse after a 31-13 loss to the Minnesota Vikings, who returned two blocked kicks for touchdowns on a 12-degree day at the University of Minnesota’s outdoor stadium. A sixth-straight loss dropped the Panthers to third in the division at 3-8-1, a game-and-a-half behind the New Orleans Saints. Most of the football world wrote them off. Even Carolina players doubted their ability to succeed. The Panthers are 4-8 coming off their bye with five games remaining, beginning with a road trip to face the Seattle Seahawks (7-5) on Sunday. They are third in the division, two games behind the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (6-6) and half game behind the Atlanta Falcons (5-8), both teams they have beaten. The Saints are last at 4-9.

Carolina (30) @ Seattle (24)

For all the drama that has surrounded the Carolina Panthers this season, a resiliency among the group has developed and left them unexpectedly in the middle of a playoff race with four games to go. The race to the NFC South title might end up going through Charlotte. Sam Darnold threw one touchdown pass, Chuba Hubbard and Raheem Blackshear both had rushing TDs, and the Panthers stayed in the thick of the muddled division race with a 30-24 win over the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday. Carolina (5-8) won for the third time in four games and won away from Charlotte for the first time since Week 10 of last season.

Seattle has allowed two of its last three opponents to top 200 yards rushing and five straight opponents have rushed for at least 122 yards. Seattle went a surprising 0-4 against the NFC South this season. Seattle lost at home to Atlanta and Carolina, lost at New Orleans and fell to Tampa Bay when the teams met in Germany.

CeeJay,

I got in touch with your cousin Letisha. Man o’ man. I’ve never had a dumb slut so willing to degrade herself for some decent pork scratchings. It had a good rear and her throat was very accommodating, even if it was an uggo.

Under interim coach Wilks, Panthers now hold playoff destiny in their hands

The Carolina Panthers seemingly were out of control two months ago when they fired coach Matt Rhule after a 1-4 start and a week later traded star running back Christian McCaffrey to the San Francisco 49ers. There was the perception around the league they were going to tank the rest of the season for the first pick of the 2023 NFL draft. A 9-8 finish would give the Panthers the tiebreaker over Tampa Bay and Atlanta (5-8) if they all finished with the same record. Carolina is in this position in large part because of Wilks, who is making a strong case to become the full-time coach next season. He’s gone 4-4 since replacing Rhule, including a 3-0 record at home, where Rhule was 5-15 in two-plus seasons.

Pittsburgh (24) @ Carolina (16)

The Steelers ran for 156 yards and three TDs on 45 carries. Najee Harris carried 24 times for 86 yards and a touchdown and Jaylen Warren added a 2-yard TD run for Pittsburgh (6-8), which has won three of its last four. The Steelers held a 13-minute edge in time of possession and converted 12 of 16 third-down opportunities, while the Panthers were 4 of 11.

The Panthers (5-9) entered the weekend needing four wins in four games to win the unimpressive NFC South. Carolina's loss gave Tampa Bay, which was hosting Cincinnati, a chance to take a two-game lead in the division.
