'Next step': Bryce Young elevated to QB1 for Panthers

The Carolina Panthers have elevated rookie Bryce Young to the No. 1 quarterback spot, a move coach Frank Reich said Thursday is "the next step" in the top pick of this year's draft becoming the Week 1 starter. While Young, as planned, had gotten more reps than veteran Andy Dalton with the first team during the first two weeks of voluntary offseason workouts, Dalton was listed as the starter and began each drill with the first unit. Reich said that 5-foot-10, 204-pound Young will continue to get the first-team reps during next week's three-day mandatory camp and that Dalton will continue to work with the second team.

2023 NFL rookie updates: Notes on 31 first-round draft picks

A few big-name NFL veterans stole the spotlight at mandatory minicamps by showing up, or not showing up at all, or delaying showing up. And it kept the news cycle humming. Naturally, there was a great deal of chatter about the three first-round quarterbacks, all of whom were taken in the first four picks. What about the defensive linemen? How about the four wide receivers taken in a row? They're all here. The answers are listed in the order of how Round 1 played out.

No.1 Bryyce Young, Carolina Panthers

Young has been as advertised, living up to all the expectations the Panthers had when they selected him No. 1. From his ability to process information, to making all the throws, to earning the respect of his teammates, he's on a clear path to be the Week 1 starter. He already has been elevated to QB1 over Andy Dalton, a clear sign the staff and teammates have confidence in him.

Panthers need another superhero to play opposite 'Spider-Man' Brian Burns

Brian Burns pegged himself and fellow Czrolina Panthers edge rusher Marquis Haynes Sr. superheroes before the 2019 season as the team switched to a 3-4 base defense. Burns was “Spider-Man". Haynes was “The Black Panther". But only Burns emerged as a true superhero. He had 7.5 sacks that season and has totaled 38 sacks over the past four campaigns (30.5 out of the base 4-3 the Panthers used the past three seasons), which has him now seeking to be among the NFL's highest paid edge rushers Haynes had one sack in 2019 and fell into the situational role he’s been in the past four seasons, tallying 13 sacks, including a career-high five last season as a 4-3 end. Why is this significant? As the Panthers transition back to the 3-4 under new defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero, they once again are looking for a superhero to step up opposite Burns. Among the candidates are Haynes, 2020 second-round pick Yetur Gross-Matos, 2023 third-round pick DJ Johnson or a veteran to be signed later.

Panthers sign No. 1 overall pick Bryce Young to $37.9M deal

The Carolina Panthers signed quarterback Bryce Young to a four-year deal on Friday that will allow the top pick of the 2023 NFL draft to report to training camp on schedule. The $37.9 million deal includes a $24.6 million signing bonus and is fully guaranteed, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter. Young was the last of Carolina's rookies to sign and the first of the three quarterbacks taken among the top four picks of the NFL draft to sign. The 5-foot-10, 204-pound Young impressed Carolina coach Frank Reich and his staff from the get-go with his ability to process and learn the new system. While he still has to prove himself in pads during training camp, Young has already met expectations that the Panthers had when they first targeted him.

Young was the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL draft and showed command of the offense during offseason workouts, but he'll have to prove he can continue to do so in pads. How he handles a real pass rush and defense that gameplans for him will be the last real test. He has passed all the others.

How Panthers coach Frank Reich's experience at quarterback will help rookie Bryce Young

Carolina Panthers quarterbacks coach Josh McCown was explaining the artistry of movement in the pocket to rookie quarterback Bryce Young early during offseason workouts when head coach Frank Reich interrupted. Reich showed the No. 1 overall pick of the draft that if he slides away from his throwing arm side, he has to put extra zip on the ball so the pass arrives on time. He explained it in a clear, concise language that few other than a former quarterback could know. Young believes that language and his relationship with Reich will speed up his transition to the NFL. It already helped him move past veteran Andy Dalton to first on the depth chart two weeks before players broke for vacation in June.

Panthers' QB Bryce Young shows frustration during practice drill

Rookie quarterback Bryce Young finally showed visible frustration in training camp, but not so much that Carolina coach Frank Reich was concerned. The frustration came near the end of Saturday's practice when Young couldn't get a play off before the whistle after moving the offense into scoring position in a two-minute drill. The top pick of the 2023 NFL draft put his hands on the side of his helmet and shook his head as the defense celebrated the stop. It was a rare moment for a player Reich and Carolina players consistently have said never gets rattled. Young waited that long to show frustration actually was impressive. On a day when he completed 7 of 15 passes there were three drops, two in the end zone, and multiple pre-snap penalties that led to the defense winning the day.

'Steal of the century'? Panthers' Frankie Luvu measuring up to Kevin Greene's vision

The 26-year-old linebacker from the village of Tafuna in American Samoa learned early in his career to carefully control his caloric intake. He patiently changed his order to avocado toast and eggs, tossing in a side order of salmon just as the server left the table. Luvu understands the virtue of patience as well as anyone after going from signing with the New York Jets as an undrafted free agent in 2018, to playing in obscurity for most of his first four NFL seasons, to finally becoming a regular starter in 2022. He’s coming off his best season -- setting career-highs in games started (14), tackles (111) and sacks (7.0) -- leading to buzz he could be a breakout defender, something that was hard to imagine his rookie year when he went back and forth between the Jets’ practice squad and 53-man roster. He’s in this position in part thanks to a bond he built with Hall of Famer Kevin Greene -- a former Jets outside linebackers coach who played three seasons for the Panthers.
