Panthers' O-line takes blame for Bryce Young's struggles

The New York Jets were the featured team on HBO's "Hard Knocks'' for Saturday's preseason game at Bank of America Stadium, but it was Carolina Panthers rookie quarterback Bryce Young who took the hard knocks. The top pick of the draft was hammered on two of his first three pass attempts and sacked on his 10th and final play. The top pick of the draft was hammered on two of his first three pass attempts and sacked on his 10th and final play. It was so bad that offensive line coach James Campen called his group together for a private meeting after head coach Frank Reich addressed his players to let them know that wasn't an acceptable standard. Young finished 4-of-6 for 21 yards on 10 plays. His worst attempts came on third down, where he was 0-for-2 with two passes that were uncatchable. But he never complained about the hits, saying "that's part of football'' and the only thing he can do is move on to the next play, which has been one of his strengths in camp.

Panthers waive Matt Corral as part of post-Matt Rhule purge

Quarterback Matt Carral on Wednesday became the latest member of former coach Matt Rhule's draft picks to be released by the Carolina Panthers For Corral, the move came a day after the initial round of cuts to get to 53 players, which had made the 2022 third-round pick out of Ole Miss believe he was safe. Overall, 13 of Rhule's 24 draft picks from 2020 to 2022 no longer are on the 53-man roster.

'I've got to be here': Why Panthers' Brian Burns isn't holding out

Burns, a two-time Pro Bowler playing on his fifth-year rookie option, never thought about holding out to force the issue. But he did watch Thursday’s practice while the two sides tried to get closer to a deal, according to a league source. Burns is set to make $16 million in 2023. He remains “hopeful’’ a long-term deal can be reached before the Sept. 10 opener at the Atlanta Falcons, although the team is willing to negotiate past that. He is projected to get a deal in the range of $23 million to $28 million per year that would make him one of the top five edge rushers in the league. Burns’ accomplishments speak for themselves. He ranks fourth over the past three seasons in quarterback pressures with 139 and 11th in sacks with 38.

Burns is coming off a career-high 12.5 sacks in 2022. His goal for this season is to break the team single-season sack record -- 15 by Kevin Greene in 1998. Burns, 25, is scheduled to make $16 million this season after the Panthers picked up his fifth-year option as the 16th pick of the 2019 draft. He is seeking a long-term deal that will make him among the top paid edge rushers in the NFL.

Panthers' top pick Bryce Young throws 2 INTs in losing NFL debut

Carolina Panthers rookie Bryce Young on Sunday couldn't avoid the fate of most quarterbacks taken with the top pick of the draft in their team's opener over the past 20years. He lost. Young has only himself to blame, throwing a pair of interceptions -- both by Falcons safety Jessie Bates III -- that led to 10 Atlanta points. Young's line was a lot like those before him. He completed 20 of 38 pass attempts for 146 yards with one touchdown against two interceptions. He had a 48.8 passer rating. Young did most of his damage in the first half on short passes. He was 8-for-9 on passes of 10 or fewer yards, averaging 7 yards per attempt. He was 2-for-7 with an interception on attempts of more than 10 yards for an average of 3.3 yards. Young opened the second half strong, gaining 16 yards on his first NFL scramble and leading Carolina to a 42-yard field goal and 10-7 lead.

Panthers' Brian Burns playing to 'dominate,' earn extension on the field

Surrounded by television cameras and reporters for his first interview in more than a week, Brian Burns reached into his travel bag late Sunday afternoon and pulled out a copy of "An Uncommon Life," written by Hall of Fame coach Tony Dungy. The Carolina Panthers' Pro Bowl linebacker referred to the book that Dungy says “highlights focusing on the Lord every day” as one of the many things that led him to play in Sunday’s season opener against the Atlanta Falcons, a 24-10 loss at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, despite not getting the long-term extension he so desperately wants. Then he went out and showed why he believes he deserves to be among the highest-paid edge rushers in the NFL, collecting 1.5 sacks, a quarterback hit, a tackle for loss and a forced fumble to go with seven tackles.
