'Difficult' stretch continues for Bryce Young, 0-6 Panthers
Carolina Panthers rookie quarterback Bryce Young seemed to take Sunday's 42-21 loss to the Miami Dolphins harder than any of the others, as the NFL's only winless team heads into its bye week. The top pick of the 2023 NFL draft didn't look at being up 14-0 in the first quarter as a "consolation prize" for a team off to its worst start since the 1998 Panthers opened 0-7. He didn't seem pleased that he had no turnovers for the first time in his five starts. Young, who was 23-4 as the starter at Alabama, is in pretty good company when it comes to quarterbacks who were top picks and got off to at least an 0-5 start. Of the quarterbacks drafted No. 1 since 1967, he's now the eighth.
Troy Aikman started 0-11 for the Dallas Cowboys. Aikman went on to become a three-time Super Bowl champion and Pro Football Hall of Famer. Eli Manning 0-6 for the New York Giants. Manning became a two-time Super Bowl champion and Super Bowl MVP.
Young had arguably his best game as a pro at Hard Rock Stadium. He completed 23 of 38 pass attempts for 217 yards and a touchdown for a QBR of 47.4. He still ranks last in the league in QBR at 31.6, but Sunday's effort raised that from 29.7 in his first four starts. Young didn't take much solace from his fast start in which he completed eight of his first nine attempts to temporarily shock the home crowd.
Panthers' Frank Reich ceding play calling to OC Thomas Brown
Reich has adamant from the day he took the job that he was best fitted to call plays for Young, the top pick of the draft, but that one day he would turn the duties over. Brown, 37, is in his first year as an NFL offensive coordinator. He came to Carolina from the Rams, where he was the assistant head coach in addition to coaching tight ends and running backs the past couple of seasons.
NFL Week 7 Power Rankings 2023: How all 32 teams stack up
Welcome to Week 7 of the 2023 NFL season. There are now zero undefeated teams in the league after the San Francisco 49ers and the Philadelphia Eagles suffered losses this weekend to the Cleveland Browns and New York Jets, respectively.
Sources: Panthers' Jeremy Chinn (quad) expected to miss 6 weeks
The Carolina Panthers will be without another key member of their secondary when they return from their bye week to face the Houston Rockets. Jeremy Chinn, who plays big nickel, safety and linebacker, is dealing with a significant quad injury that is expected to sideline him for up to six weeks, league sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter on Wednesday. Chinn does not need surgery for the injury, the sources said.
Chinn, a second-round pick in 2020, is in the last year of his contract. There has been speculation he could be a candidate for trade before the deadline. He is sixth on the team in tackles with 23. He has been a starter for the Panthers since being selected in the second round of the 2020 draft and finished runner-up to Chase Young in the Defensive Rookie of the Year voting that season. He led the team with 107 tackles in 2021.
Can new playcaller Thomas Brown spark Panthers' offense?
Brown joins Eric Bieniemy of the Washington Commanders and Brian Johnson of the Philadelphia Eagles as the only Black playcallers in the NFL. He considers the opportunity Reich has given him "huge'' for what it could mean to other Black assistants.
Frank Reich has "zero questions" of Bryce Young's toughness
Young was a highly sought-after college quarterback selected by the Panthers with the No. 1 overall pick in this year's draft, and he was a highly-recruited high school quarterback who committed to Alabama and won a Heisman Trophy.
