Cassie (aka Summer Reading 2008)

I picked up a high school library philosophy book at a thrift store today. I FEEL MORE PHILOSOPHICAL ALREADY. It was published in 1961, I think they expected kids to be smarter back then.

I hope everyone gets their copies soon...I will say ONE THING - the writing's very vivid and compelling. k, two things.

no more! I hid the book under a pile of blankets!

not peeking.

not even just one more page!

nope.

THE BIEF AND WONDROUS LIFE OF OSCAR WAO, by Junot Diaz, is a great book. Won the 2008 Pulitzer prize in fiction. It's about a Dominican/American family, but has tons of sci-fi/fantasy, gaming, and comic book geek stuff in it, as the title characer is a huge geek, and also lots of sort of mythicl stuff about 20th century Dominican hstory, and all the bloodshed and horrible tufgng on in that. And lots of sex. Best book ever.

OH.. I think the author was on The Colbert Report about a month ago. I was thinking about getting that book, but I forgot the name of it when I woke up the next morning, lol.

Yeah, he was. It's really super good, you should get it.

Maybe I will too at some point in my life.

OR MAYBE NOT.

I DONT KNOW!

My books are scheduled to arrive by tomorrow.. usually they get here a bit early, so I'm hoping the mailman isn't having his way with my books, THE BASTARD.

I started reading The Road by the way.

I'm coincidentally reading a sci-fi book called "Eternity Road" by Jack McDevitt.

My books didn't come in the mail today.. they better be here tomorrow :rwmad:

I guess I should start reading it too.

But I don't know if I'll stick with it. My attentions are divided these days...

OH YAY! The mailman just delivered my books!

We should decide how going to do this. Someone smarter than me should make the rules and regulations.

I couldn't be bothered waiting and started reading The Road. We'll never stick to a schedule, what with our hectic lives.

Well I read almost half the book today. I was just wondering how we should do the discussion if we are gonna talk about it. I suck at starting off because I have too many things going through my head. I need to bounce my thoughts off of other people's more organized thoughts.

The kid in the book would make a good MF'er. <-- see I think of dumb things, lol.

Why does he miss out apostrophes sometimes.

I noticed that too. There are apostrophes for contractions like "I'm" but not for won't and don't. I think maybe it's to set the tone, like he was too tired to put them in, or the man is to tired to say them. I think the book is beautifully written, somehow, even though the story is sad and their journey seems hopeless. It's like every time I think it's the end for them, they find hope. Maybe we are supposed to feel their hopelessness so we can feel the relief when they find more food and other things.

I've almost finished the book already, and I realized that there really aren't any spoilers save how it ends (probably). The entire book is the same so far, and I have a hard time stopping myself from just reading the whole thing. I'm afraid I may miss something, but the writing is very simple so I don't think I have missed anything. It's like I'm on this journey with them, and after I stop reading I can't stop thinking about them.

^Cassie, that's just how I feel reading it. I wish they weren't on this journey, though. Horrible. jesus. And I have a bad feeling about the dad's coughing.

Just short of halfway through where I stopped so I'll continue on now.
It's compelling writing, isn't it?

Yes, I love it. There is really something nice about how straightforward the writing is. It's almost minimalist (or some fancy word like that). I think too many authors think they need to tell you everything, instead of allowing you to use your own imagination.

If only my heart were stone.

I kinda feel like I can relate to the man and boy in the book. They're stronger than I would be in a situation like that, but their despair feels real.
