Cassie (aka Summer Reading 2008)

I bought The Road last year. Still haven't cracked it.

Thanks to this thread I went to Barnes & Noble for the first time in months. Bought Bourdain's Kitchen Confidential and The Bobby Gold Stories. Also impulse-bought Samuel Beckett's Nohow On and A.M. Homes' This Book Will Save Your Life.

Read the introduction to the Beckett on the ride home, and while waiting for take-out. Scared now.

I wish I had the patience to read some of these, they sound so good. I think all this tv and computing has really fucked up my attention span. I seriously can't sit still for more than about a minute without becoming really agitated.

I know what you mean. I mostly read while commuting on trains and buses. I don't read much at home, because I'm always on my computer WITH the TV going at the same time.

The Road sounds interesting, but knowing Oprah likes it is putting me off...

If it has one of those gold Oprah stickers on the cover, just cover it with duct tape or a decal, like I did.

Oprah is irrelevant! Join The Collective, Wacky of 5 billion! resistance is futile!

I'll let you read it first and tell me what I should think.

they better have it at MY library....actually havent checked yet.

I COULD BUY SOME GRAPHIC NOVELS INSTEAD OF DOWNLOADING THEM AND STEALING?

I never download books; just don't enjoy reading novels from a computer monitor. But it's not stealing from the Gutenburg (sp?) site - all the books there are free for the downloading, if you like that sort of thing.

OK - the little library DOES have it; placed a hold on The Road - it's due back in 9 days which should mesh nicely with Cassie's family leaving.

Same here. TK on the computer, Kill Bill Vol 1 (for some reason - I hate it!) on the telly. And some of the time I have my laptop on as well for good measure. God forbid a webpage takes too long to load or I'll start eating food I'm not hungry for, or cleaning my already clean nails, just for some stimulation.

I should also mention that The Road won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 2007. DID I MENTION THAT ALREADY?

No.

Are there any Fireman Sam books?

Sure to be - he's Classic!

(UNlike that bastard NORMAN).

His engine's bright and clean!

You could get The Road, and read it too! I've heard a lot of good things about it. OH and did you ever read The Left Hand of Darkness? I think I told you about that one last year, but I don't remember if youever said anything about it.

The road was just OK.

very linear and specific.

Have you read The Time Traveler's Wife? or The Pillars of Earth?

both worth the price of admisson.

oh, and the one with Strange and Norell. that was excellent

and....Neverwhere!

I subscribe to audible dot com. i have a 1.5 hr commute......i tear up some audio books.

Have you read The Time Traveler's Wife?

I've been wanting to read that for ages, but I hear they're making it into a movie. Just might watch that instead.
