Washington Huskies-California Golden Bears game canceled because of coronavirus case

Saturday's football season opener between the California Golden Bears and Washington Huskie has been canceled after a Cal player tested positive for the coronavirus, the Pac-12 announced Thursday. "The Pac-12 has approved a request from Cal to cancel the Washington at Cal football game scheduled for November 7," the Pac-12 said in a statement. "This decision was made under the Pac-12's football game cancellation policy due to Cal not having the minimum number of scholarship players available for the game as a result of a positive football student-athlete COVID-19 case and resulting isolation of additional football student-athletes under contact tracing protocols." Cal reported the case after a daily antigen test came back positive and was then confirmed through a PCR test. The game will be declared a no contest, per Pac-12 policy.

Air Force-Army football game postponed due to coronavirus

The Air Force-Army football game on Saturday has been postponed because of COVID-19 issues at Air Force, the school announced Thursday. Air Force had been set to travel Thursday to West Point, New York, in preparation for Saturday's game, which was set to kick off at 11:30 a.m. ET and be televised by CBS. But an increase in COVID-19 cases and contact tracing will prevent the game from taking place. It is unclear whether the game can be rescheduled. Air Force and Army have no common open dates left on the schedule. The teams could play Dec. 19, the week after Army plays Navy and a week before Army plays in the Independence Bowl. The Mountain West championship game is also set for Dec. 19.

Mississippi State Bulldogs' COVID-19 issues force postponement of game against Auburn Tigers

"Based on positive tests and those considered as close contacts, along with non-COVID injuries, we do not have the minimum number of scholarship student-athletes available for Saturday's game against Auburn," MSU director of athletics John Cohen said in a statement. "While we are disappointed that Saturday's game has been postponed, our priority is the health, safety and well-being of our student-athletes and staff. We will continue to follow all established protocols and evaluate the most responsible path to return to the field."The SEC has been hit especially hard by COVID-19 testing this week. Players who test positive for COVID-19 must quarantine for 10 days. Players who are considered high-risk because of contact with a suspected positive must quarantine for 14 days.

Notre Dame mandates COVID testing after football celebration

Notre Dame has implemented mandatory coronavirus testing for students and strict penalties for those who don't comply after students rushed the school's football field to celebrate a double-overtime upset over Clemson and held numerous weekend parties. A crowded mass of students, players and coaches was on the field in the minutes following the Fighting Irish's 47-40 win Saturday night in South Bend, Indiana, over then-No. 1 Clemson. Many of the thousands who stormed the field were not wearing masks or had their masks pulled down. Now all Notre Dame students are required to undergo coronavirus testing before they leave South Bend for the extended winter break, the school president, Rev. John Jenkins, told students Sunday night. The email announcement didn't specifically reference the storming of the field but rather "many gatherings" over the weekend. The campus has also put in place a zero-tolerance policy for gatherings that do not follow safety guidelines. Any student hosting a large gathering will face "severe sanctions.''

NFL memo says all NFL teams to operate under intensive COVID-19 protocols
Requirements under the intensive protocols, which 28 of the league's 32 teams have already experienced at some point this season, include virtual team meetings and the wearing of masks by all players and staff at all times while at the facility, including during practice.

Las Vegas Raiders put 7 more players on COVID-19 list ahead of Kansas City Chiefs game
As close contacts, the players could be eligible to return in time to face the 8-1 Chiefs, who are coming off their bye week, on Sunday night, as long as they continue to test negative this week. The Raiders (6-3) faced a similar situation earlier this season when four starting offensive linemen went on the COVID-19 list as close contacts to Brown.

Clemson Tigers-Florida State Seminoles game postponed

Florida State and Clemson will not play Saturday after the teams' medical personnel could not mutually agree on moving forward with the game, the ACC said in a statement. The teams were supposed to play at noon in Tallahassee, Florida. Multiple sources told ESPN that a Clemson player tested positive for COVID-19 on Friday after practicing with the Tigers during the week. That led Florida State to say it was not comfortable playing Saturday's game, the source said. ACC protocols state teams must be tested the day before competition, so both Florida State and Clemson got tested Friday per conference rules. Those tests are done by an independent third party, and results are received either the same day or early the following day. Once those tests are received, both schools get on a call with the ACC to sign off on whether they feel comfortable proceeding with the game. This is standard before any ACC game can be played.

NFL defends decision to play Steelers-Ravens

The NFL defended its decision to play a game Wednesday between the Baltimore Ravens and Pittsburgh Steelers, saying it was confident that a COVID-19 outbreak among Ravens players and staff had concluded and posed no threat for further infection. "We can say with confidence that there is no active infection among the players, coaches and staff on the Ravens sideline today," NFL chief medical officer Dr. Allen Sills said during a conference call two hours before kickoff. All members of the Ravens' traveling party returned negative results during rapid point-of-care tests Wednesday morning. Before that, however, the organization had produced 10 consecutive days of at least one positive test, including at least 14 players. The Ravens were set to take on the Steelers without quarterback Lamar Jackson, among many other key players. Commissioner Roger Goodell, meanwhile, called it a "remarkable achievement" for the league to have made it through 12 of its 17 regular-season weeks without canceling a game. He said the league's "collective goal" is to complete the season and added "we are on a path to do that" despite rising infection rates around the country. The league continues to discuss its options for the playoffs, including the possibility of modified local bubbles for teams that advance. Goodell has ruled out a conventional bubble that would put the league under one roof.

Portland Trail Blazers close facility after 3 positive COVID-19 tests

The Portland Trail Blazers have closed their facility for deep cleaning after three positive COVID-19 tests came back in a span of four days. Sunday was to have been the first full day of training camp for the Blazers. They, along with all other NBA teams, began having players back in their facility for individual workouts last week. The team did not say whether the positive tests involved players, staff or some combination of the two. Portland is scheduled to open its preseason slate at home Friday against Sacramento, a game that -- for now -- is set to be televised nationally on ESPN. NBA teams began coronavirus testing to prepare for camp around Nov. 24, and the league said 48 players, almost 9% of all tested were positive for COVID-19 in the first week of that program.
