NBA memo details plans for game-day COVID-19 testing in all 28 cities
As the NBA continues to deal with the reality of attempting to play the 2020-21 regular season amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the league sent a memo to teams Wednesday night detailing plans to try to supplement the testing already in place for players and referees with localized game-day testing in all 28 NBA cities. The memo, a copy of which was obtained by ESPN, asks each team to spend the next two days attempting to find local testing providers; the league plans to discuss those findings with the teams over the weekend with the goal of beginning to implement the extra tests sometime next week. The intent is to find a local provider of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests that can turn around at least 40 tests -- enough to handle players on both teams, as well as that night's referees -- that could be collected the morning of a game and returned at least one hour before tipoff. Under the current system, for players or referees to participate in a game, they need to have a negative PCR test from the day before the game and a negative rapid test from the morning of the game. So, for example, players and referees participating in Thursday's game between the Miami Heat and Philadelphia 76ers would need to have a negative PCR test taken Wednesday and a negative rapid test taken Thursday morning.
Sources: NFL testing Buccaneers, Chiefs twice daily for COVID-19 ahead of Super Bowl LV
The NFL is ramping up COVID-19 protocols leading up to Super Bowl LV. Coaches and players for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Kansas City Chiefs will be tested twice daily before the Feb.7 game in Tampa, Florida, sources told ESPN. NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy confirmed that players receive a PCR (polymerase chain reaction) test in the morning and a rapid PCR test later in the afternoon. As of today, any player with a positive test will be ruled out for the Super Bowl, which will remain on as scheduled, ESPN senior NFL insider Adam Schefter reported. The NFL successfully navigated a full season with no game cancellations despite several potential COVID outbreaks with the Tennessee Titans, Baltimore Ravens and other teams. The league punished teams that broke protocol with fines and/or loss of draft picks.

Sources: NBA to strengthen mask rules for players as part of tightening of health and safety protocols
As the NBA continues to tighten its health and safety protocols to combat the COVID-19 pandemic, the league will begin requiring players to wear KN95 or KF94 masks in all instances where required, sources told ESPN. The policy will go into effect in the next week, sources said. The league is in the process of getting masks to all 30 teams before making it mandatory that they are worn. Starting with games Friday, the NBA also plans to more strictly enforce current rules regarding the use of face masks. Under the league's health and safety protocols, whenever players, coaches or staff members are required to wear masks -- including while on the bench during games -- they will now need to wear the KN95 or KF94 masks. Players are allowed to sit by themselves in a "cooldown" area immediately after leaving games to catch their breath, but once they do they are supposed to return to the bench area and wear a mask. This is one of several adjustments the NBA has made in recent weeks to tighten its protocols while there are more than 100,000 new cases of COVID-19 per day, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention's data tracker. The league has had to postpone nearly two dozen games. Other adjustments include preventing players from having guests in hotel rooms on the road, and limiting on-court interactions before and after games.
