Defiance

I like the back story and the races thing.

The game stuff looks crap, but then I think all of that stuff looks crap.

I'm seconding Filthy Whore on this one: Alien Nation rehash with Some District 9 fx and cool BSG music.

From what I've seen of the game, the show won't be all that impressive. Yet, as bad as Revolution is, I doubt it could be worse.

It was a bit cheesy at times, but then other times it was pretty good. Nolan, the main male character reminds me of Trip Tucker, which was kind of distracting because I kept thinking of Trip and Archer making sweet love, sorry PHLARCHER!

The effects were usually good, and most of the aliens looked good, but some of them were a bit Farscape, IMO!

I think my favorite character is the alien chick in all the promos (her name is Irisa). Also, she can sing country music.

Yeah it was okay I guess.

I mean I like the setting, it's interesting even if it is essentially 5 already existing sci-fi shows smooshed together.

But the main character is so dull. He's just your basic wise-cracking good at everything Han Solo wannabe with a heart of gold and an eye for the ladies and blaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh I really don't care. I mean when he left with his money before the big fight there was no point because we've all seen Star Wars and know he'll come back.

But I give points to anything that uses "If I Didn't Care" by The Ink Spots so whatevs.

The music was good, though.

Yeah it was good. Reminded me a bit of Eureka where the town's Sherriff gets killed so the main hero becomes the new Sherriff/Lawkeeeper.

It was...decent but SO MANY CLICHES. It really could have used someone doing or saying something unexpected. I liked the alien daughter the best but maybe that was just because of the actress. The Romeo/Juliet stuff with the EMO ALIEN was cringey. I'll watch more as the premise means it has a lot of potential, but I was FAR from blown away...

Yeah, I was thinking Alphas was getting close to BSGness when it got canceled. I HATE YOU SYFY CHANNEL.

I'm watching it on Hulu. no tv. It might turn out okay. Cute johnny Cash beginning. Rockne OBannion so it could be a cross of BSG meets Farscape.

Lead male character = every post-futuristic war soldier in any sci-fi show ever. He was a mashup of Mal from Firefly, Han Solo, and (insert good-natured cowboy's name here). The daughter was interesting in that she was the silent type who liked knives. Didn't remind me of Kyra from Chronicles of Riddick at all. Nope.

The Volge(sp?) were nothing more than Warhammer 40k ripoffs. "I don't like that scaffolding. Knock it down," says the commander of the bad guys. The mech took ONE shot at it and then stopped firing.

Then there's the Mad Max aliens. Seriously? Steam punk wardrobe?

The Defiant Few is a blatant ripoff (not an homage) of The Defiant Ones, a 1958 movie about forced tolerance in the face of adversity.

The cgi was HORRIBLY campy at moments (that fishtailing, physics-defying crown vic on an unpaved road) and I thought I was back in the 90's, watching a The Outer Limits rehash. Hooray for light daggers! I'm sure Lucas is TOTALLY cool with that.

The only cool thing we got to see were the mechs - an underused mobile weapon of warfare we've only really seen in Avatar. The dialogue was fairly well done.

...and another alien curse word so they can circumvent censorship.

But she managed to say it with real aplomb. Remember frak? Turns out that one really means fracture and frell is closer to stoned.

^ except they went so far as to include it in the subtitles for the aliens who didn't speak english. I've never seen that done.

Meh, the alien swearing and language weren't as big a point of contention with me as much as the other things I stated.

There were some highlights, like the cold-fire weapon discharge beam, and the volge's disintegration rays. The scenery was cool to look at and the makeup was great on a few of the races, like the grey cybernetic people and the bio-man.

Oh, something else: black lights EVERYWHERE.
