Doctor Who: The Day of The Doctor

The Tomtrek

Love Wookiee
On November 23rd 1963, the BBC showed the first episode of an educational programme designed to go between Grandstand and Jukebox Jury.

Unfortunately, not many people watched it. Both because of large transmitter failures across the country, and because the day before a certain President went and got shot in Dallas, and no one was really paying attention to a show about a strange guy and some teachers.

Somehow, 50 years later, it's still on the air, and there's now a special show all about that. It's called "Doctor Who: The Day of The Doctor".

On November 23rd 2013, at the SAME TIME AROUND THE WORLD in cinemas and on TV the 50th Anniversary Special will air in both 2D and 3D. There's a trailer for it being shown tomorrow (Saturday) and 8pm, but the BBC being silly they accidentally released it early in Latin America.

Here it is: http://www.combom.co.uk/2013/11/the-day-of-doctor-trailer-from-bbc.html

I'm rather looking forward to it.

(I'm also looking forward to An Adventure in Space and Time, a documentary/drama about the creation of Doctor Who, airing November 21st)

Please don't post spoilers, eh?

It looks good! I don't know about having Billie being BAD WOLF again (not a spoiler it's in the trailer okay) but maybe it's better than having Rose show up with a big gun and making bitchy comments about Clara.

That's a little better than the one they showed before Atlantis tonight (which was good, but didn't feel as dramatic).

I have only watched 2 episodes since Matt Smith became Doctor, but I will make a point of watching this one.

Matt himself is ok, he has not been particularly well served by the writers and directors, and casting of guest stars.

Honestly I feel that the general quality of everything went up when Steven Moffatt took over - the show has definitely never looked better (seriously, go back and watch the early Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant episodes, they look so cheap now).

He's certainly had his share of bad episodes but oh boy have they never ever reached the level of absolute stinkers David Tennant had.

Anywho, here's the extended trailer:

My only real problem with the Moffat era is that I think he wrote himself into a corner with the whole Silence/River/dead Doctor arc in series 6 and it doesn't really hold together as a story, but those episodes aren't on Netflix so I'll never be able to go into more detail sorry!

Looking forward to this immensely. Not looking forward to the return of Billie Piper, but I'll take what I get for getting David Tennant back as well.

I've been watching a lot of Luther lately and it makes me sad every time Paul McGann comes on screen because he got left out.

"The Night of The Doctor" Mini-episode:

PAUL MC-FUCKING-GANN

Also here's a trailer for An Adventure in Space and Time:

I'm assuming the Night Of The Doctor thing is a load of continuity porn for stuff I don't know about (it was still good though.)

((I still have a really small hope that The Day of The Doctor will end with Christopher Eccleston's mug saying "fan...tastic?" but I won't be disappointed if it doesn't!))

It's pure fanwank, in the best way.

The Sisterhood of Karn are from the Fourth Doctor story The Brain of Morbius, while the companions the Eighth Doctor lists before he regenerates are from the audio stories, which are now brought into the main continuity.

Also did you notice (I am fairly sure you did) the Hurt reflection was young Hurt, implying he was the war doctor for a very long time, possibly as long as the first incarnation.

Yeah, it looked like an old publicity still or something.

Great to see Paul McGann back, even if it wasn't for long!

Matt Smith was the Doctor for over 200 years without showing signs of aging so Hurt must be Doctor for even longer than that?
