Doctor Who: The Day of The Doctor

The problem with these newer specials is that they seem to completely ignore anything before 2005 as it pertains to companions, baddies, whatever. They acknowledge that "Oh yeah, this show has been on for fifty years", but don't show anything except for the last eight.

Despite all the advertising it completely passed me by that it was on tonight, so will catch up tomorrow.

Also have to get round to seeing Brian Cox's Science of Doctor Who. Did anyone see that?

Yeah An Adventure in Space and Time was really, really good. There were a few bits of dramatic licence used but nothing that really matters. The Culture Show special last night was also really good, as a quick "Brief History of Doctor Who" thing.

But anyway, in just over four hours, all across the world (YES EVEN YOU CASSIE), The Day of The Doctor airs and then we can all hop onto the internet to say how it wasn't as good as we thought it would be!

We even had mention of Dr Who Day today here in the colonies!...

I was in the kitchen pouring coffee when I heard this familiar theme music on the radio and there it was....

He said "all thirteen" before Capaldi's eyes. Shame it wasn't Timothy Dalton (spitting everywhere.)

I thought it was ever so slightly slow at first, and the Zygon plot didn't really seem to have an end (I guess they just negotiated a peace, it just seemed a bit abrupt after they forgot their identities) and I didn't get why Kate Thingy was still going to destroy London even after three Doctors showed up (you'd think she'd know the day was saved?)

But yeah the last twenty minutes were spectacular! The Tom Baker bit nearly made me feel human emotions too. Smith, Tennant and Hurt interacting was a lot of fun. Clara felt more like a proper character now too. I'D CALL IT A SUCCESS.

I didn't even bother with the BBC3 thing when I saw Zoe Ball and that tit from T4.

ANYWAY HAPPY THOUGHTS

It was an excellent episode and I loved it!! Like Wacky I thought it was a bit slow at first, though my real worry was that there were a lot of elements being introduced that just seemed like they'd never be tied together. It felt like it could be one of those very well acted, well filmed Moffat episodes where the plot ends up leaving you scratching your head. But with some relief after about 20 minutes I realised that initial worry wasn't necessary. Well paced, entertaining, funny, emotional and full of so many unexpected surprises. Tom Baker's inclusion makes me wonder how many other Doctors (aside from Eccles) were asked, but it was great to see him and Peter Capaldi's eyebrows. I can only imagine how many references there were for hardcore fans that completely passed me by.

Oh and I really liked David Tennant. According to Wacky's recent reviews I probably haven't misjudged how annoying Tennant could be during the series, but in this episode he was really quite charming. Maybe it helped that he never had any scenes without at least one other lead actor present, so he couldn't chew the scenery with impunity.

Oh oh. One thing I was unclear on was how the trio managed to get all the previous doctors to join in at the end? How were they contacted? Using the Moment's vortex thing?

Best bit of the BBC3 shitefest, I imagine.

At the point I'm at now (half way through series 3) he's generally not that annoying. I think it helps not being around Billie Piper. When I do find him annoying it usually when he goes all angry and gum-flared. But I noticed he didn't do that today. Maybe Moffat made sure to not write any moments where he gets angry, which is impressive given how much stuff he had to juggle with the script.

Whew, just got back after seeing it in the cinema, and I was thoroughly impressed. Aside from the negative of 3D (too dark, blurry glasses) seeing it in the cinema was really good, the cheering at some of the moments (Capaldi, Tom Baker) was great.

Yeah it was good. It was a good episode of Doctor Who. The Doctors were there. Peter Calaldi. It was good. I can't really think more at the moment but it was good and I liked it, it was good.

Also The Five(ish) Doctors is on the Red Button service and it is amazing.

EDIT: Watch it here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p01m3kfy
