Predicting 2023 NFL offseason moves: How to improve all 16 NFC teams

Dallas Cowboys. Resolve the running back situation.

After years of having a clearly defined one-two punch, the Cowboys can go in several different directions at running back. Ezekiel Elliott's status is in question after he has battled injuries the past two seasons, while Tony Pollard, an unrestricted free agent, fractured his left fibula in Dallas' playoff loss to San Francisco. Both players could be back in 2023, or the team could start over.

Cowboys use franchise tag on RB Tony Pollard

The Dallas Cowboys have placed their franchise tag on running back Tony Pollard, the team announced Monday. The 2023 franchise tender for a running back is worth $10.09 million, which immediately counts against the Cowboys' salary cap whether he signs the tender immediately or not. The deadline for teams to use the franchise tag is Tuesday at 4 p.m. ET. A fourth-round draft pick in 2019, Pollard had a breakout season in 2022 and earned a Pro Bowl spot after eclipsing 1,000 yards (1,007) for the first time in his career, although surgery to repair a high ankle sprain suffered in the playoffs against the San Francisco 49ers kept him out of the Pro Bowl Games festivities.

With Tony Pollard in fold, what's next for Ezekiel Elliott, Cowboys?

After the Dallas Cowboys placed the $10.091 franchise tag on Tony Pollard on Monday, the attention immediately moved to fellow running back Ezekiel. Elliott is set to count $16.4 million against the salary cap with a nonguaranteed $10.4 million base salary. The Cowboys could look for Elliott to take a significant pay cut, but it’s worth pointing out they did not make pay-cut offers to linebacker DeMarcus Ware and receiver Dez Bryant before releasing both players. Per ESPN’s Stats & Information, Pollard ranked fourth among running backs last year in yards per touch (5.9); Elliott was last (3.9). If the Cowboys cut Elliott, they would save $4.86 million. If they designate him a post-June 1 cut, they would save $10.9 million. The Cowboys would like to sign Pollard to a multiyear deal. With the tag in place, they have until July 17 to do so or he will play the season counting $10.09 million against the cap.

Cowboys rework Dak Prescott, Zack Martin deals to free up $30M

Needing to get under the salary cap by next week, the Dallas Cowboys created about $30 million in room on Friday by restructuring the contracts of quarterback Dak Prescott and right guard Zack Martin. The Cowboys were roughly pegged about $18 million over the cap, but these moves get them under and give them wiggle room to re-sign some of their own free agents to-be, if possible, before the market opens. The restructuring of the contracts does not preclude the Cowboys from working out extensions for either player later this offseason. Speaking at the NFL scouting combine last week, executive vice president Stephen Jones said the team would like to discuss an extension for Prescott. With the move, Prescott's 2023 cap figure is roughly $27 million. His 2024 cap figure will rise to a little more than $59 million as a result of the restructure. The Cowboys cleared $8.8 million in restructuring Martin's contract. He is signed through 2024 but remains one of the best guards in football and was named an All-Pro for the seventh time in 2022.

Sources: Cowboys trade for CB Gilmore, re-sign LB Vander Esch

The Dallas Cowboys answered one of their bigger offseason questions by acquiring cornerback Stephon Gilmore from the Indianapolis Colts for a fifth-round draft pick. The Cowboys gave up pick No. 176, one of the two fifth-round compensatory picks they earned last week, to the Colts in exchange for Gilmore, who is entering the final year of his contract and has a base salary of $7.9 million. Gilmore, 32, started 16 games last season for Indianapolis and had two interceptions, one of which came against the Cowboys. The Cowboys also are bringing back linebacker Leighton Vander Esch. Vander Esch, who turned 27 in February, had 90 tackles while starting 14 games in 2022. He also had 3 tackles for loss, 1 sack, 3 quarterback pressures and a forced fumble.

Source: Cowboys to release RB Ezekiel Elliott after 7 seasons

The Dallas Cowboys will release Ezekiel Elliott, making the running back a free agent, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter. Elliott was set to count $16.7 million against the salary cap with a $10.9 million non-guaranteed base salary. Elliott will be designated a post-June 1 cut, per sources, which means the club will save nearly $11 million against the 2023 cap but he will count $4.9 million against the 2024 cap. The Cowboys will not get the cap credit until June 1.

Injuries slowed Elliott the past two years. He played through a partially torn posterior cruciate ligament in 2021 while not missing a game. He missed only two games in 2022 because of a hyperextended right knee but wore a brace for most of the season. Elliott had a career-low 876 rushing yards in 2022, but he scored 12 touchdowns and remained a top short-yardage back and pass protector. But in the final four regular-season games, he averaged just 2.7 yards per carry and had just 17 runs of 10 yards or more on the season.

Now that the Cowboys have released Ezekiel Elliott, he finishes his time with the Dallas Cowboys as the third-leading rusher in franchise history. Only Hall of Famers Emmit Smith and Tony Dorsett have more, proof of an exceptional run for the former first-round pick.

Why return of 8-time pro bowler Tyron Smith gives Cowboys flexibility on O-line
During McCarthy’s tenure as coach, Smith has played in just 17 of a possible 50 regular-season games. He played in four games in 2022. He missed six games in 2021 because of an ankle injury and a stint on the COVID list. A neck injury limited him to two games in 2020.

Cowboys trade for Texans WR Brandin Cooks

Wanting to add speed and a complement to Pro Bowler CeeDee Lamb, the Dallas Cowboys acquired Houston Texans wide receiver Brandon Cooks on Sunday for a fifth-round pick in 2023 and a sixth-round pick in 2024. The trade for Cooks likely takes the Cowboys out of the competition for free agent wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr., a team source told ESPN's Ed Werder. In Cooks, the Cowboys acquire a speed threat to pair with Lamb and Gallup, whom the organization believes will be much better in his second year back from major surgery. Cooks, 29, had been vocal about his unhappiness in Houston and said he didn't want to be part of a rebuild. He caught 57 passes for 699 yards and three scores in 13 games for the Texans last season.
