How bout those Cowboys!

The Cowboys would be the seventh team to make the playoffs with two losing streaks of at least three games should they qualify. The 2016 Lions are the most recent and they lost in the wild-card round. The 2011 Broncos and 2009 Jets are the only teams to have won a playoff game with two three-game losing streaks.

Dak Prescott described the mood in the Cowboys locker room after Thursday's loss that leaves them at 6-7: "Frustrating, I think that's the best word for it. It's a blessing, fortunate enough, I don't know how it is, we're still in the lead for our division. You have to be thankful for that. But we can't hang our hat on that. We have got to figure out our issues right now, fix them, and get better."

A displeased Jerry Jones addressed the media after Thursday's 31-24 loss to Chicago and he made it clear he doesn't care if the Cowboys finish 7-9 or 8-8 and make the postseason. “Are you asking me if I would take the division and go to the playoffs, if we got in on any basis? The answer is yes. Absolutely yes,” Jones said. “Acceptable? I don't know. Not if we're not playing good but if we're playing a lot better than we played tonight, I'll take getting in.”

Jason Garrett said he can't speak to whether the constant questioning of his job security is weighing on the players, but he believes they are still buying in. “I just see how they come to work every day,” Garrett said. “I see how they practice and unfortunately we didn't carry the practice work to the game.” Nor did Garrett see any players quit. “I don't believe that,” he said.

Jerry Jones cut off during radio interview for cursing twice

A day after the Dallas Cowboys lost their third straight game, a testy Jerry Jones addressed the team's issues during a radio interview that was cut off midway after he cursed twice. Jones, the Cowboys' owner and general manager, told 105.3 The Fan in Dallas on Friday that he deserves his share of the blame for the losing streak that has kept Dallas (6-7) from taking control of the NFC East.

The interview got off to a rocky start, with Jones telling the hosts to "get your damn act together" and saying he didn't like their attitude. Later in the interview, Jones used the word "bulls---" twice, leading the call to be disconnected after a delay button was used in each instance. The station's program director confirmed the disconnect, saying Jones did not hang up. After being reconnected, Jones said he understands the fans' frustration with both him and coach Jason Garrett. But the owner said it may not help to move on from Garrett at this time.

Jason Garrett said he did not anticipate making any staff changes with three games to go. He did say there could be lineup changes. “The guys who earn the playing time by playing the right way are going to play more,” Garrett said. “Obviously you can't swap everybody out. That's not what we're talking about, but we have to look for opportunities to play the guys who play the right way and have done that consistently when they've gotten opportunities.”

Jerry Jones questioning lack of success after 3rd consecutive loss
"These guys are mentally OK for me, and all these guys are talented enough for me, so that's good," Jones said. "I'm questioning how to put together a coordinated one that complements each other, how to put together a team that can win a football game. ... We're not collectively getting together as a team and doing the things it takes to win ballgames."

Source: Reseeding playoff teams has 'never been a consideration' for NFL
With the NFC East winner poised to have a .500-or-worse record and with NFC wild-card teams expected to have double-diget victories, there have been increasing public calls for the playoffs to be reseeded. But those calls are mostly from fans and the media; they have not happened within the NFL. So one of the NFC East teams, likely the Dallas Cowboys (6-7) or the Philadelphia Eagles (5-7), will wind up hosting a playoff game at a time when its record is worse than that of the wild-card teams that open the postseason on the road.

Answers hard to come by for what has happened to Cowboys
This being 6-7. This being a second three-game losing streak this season. This being a coach's job security being questioned every day. This being an owner and general manager criticizing his coach and the staff one week and praising him and it four days later. This being an offense that can't do anything right after the first drive. This being a defense that can't tackle or make a stop when it matters. This being a special-teams unit that can't make a field goal attempt.

Cowboys release kicker Brett Maher, sign Kai Forbath

The Dallas Cowboys have released kicker Brett Maher, who leads the NFL with 10 missed field goal attempts this season, In Thursday's loss to the Chicago Bears, Maher missed a 42-yard attempt in the second quarter that would have tied the score at 10. It was his 10th miss of the season and the most in a season for a kicker in the past four seasons. Maher connected on just 1 of 5 attempts of 40-49 yards this season, which made him one of three kickers in the past 20 years to connect on 20% or worse of those kicks. David Akers went 1-of-6 in 2007, and Martin Gramatica went 1-of-5 in 2004.

Forbath, 32, was cut last week by the New England Patriots after he subbed for an injured Nick Folk and made one field goal attempt and 1 of 2 point-after tries in a loss to the Houston Texans. Forbath has made 85.8% of his kicks (121 of 141) in a career with five teams. Forbath was among three kickers the Cowboys worked out on Monday, with the other two being Tristan Vizcaino and Nick Rose. Those two also worked out for the Cowboys last week, in addition to Austin MacGinnis, but the Cowboys opted to stick with Maher then.

Sizing up coaching market if the Cowboys move on from Jason Garrett
Whenever a NFL coach is hired, there is always an expiration date. For some, it doesn't take very long to figure out. For others, it might take nine seasons. The Cowboys are trending in a direction that has many believing Garrett's expiration date could be as soon as Dec. 30, the day after the regular season ends, or whenever a playoff appearance ends in something other than a spot in the NFC Championship Game on Jan. 19.

Mike Zimmer was a Cowboys assistant coach from 1994 through 2006. Ron Rivera interviewed with Jones, so the Cowboys know him. Mike McCarthy? Josh McDaniels? Matt Eberflus was on Garrett's original staff in 2011, serving as linebackers coach as the Cowboys kept their 3-4 scheme. Urban Meyer said he would be interested in the Cowboys job if it came open. He has had success at Bowling Green, Utah, Florida and Ohio State.

.

Jason Garrett shows 'highlight reel' in effort to help shake slide
Garrett made a similar move after the Cowboys lost three games in a row after their 3-0 start to the season. The team responded with their most complete game of the season in a 37-20 victory against the Philadelphia Eagles.

With offense stalling, Cowboys need Dak Prescott more than ever
In his past three games, Prescott has a completion percentage (59.5%) that ranks 24th. He is 18th in yards per attempt (6.88), and his QBR is 48.1, which is also 18th in the league. In the first 10 games of the season, Prescott completed 67.7% of his passes, averaged 8.82 yards per attempt and had a 78.2 QBR. Regardless of how this season ends, the Cowboys view Prescott as their quarterback of the future, one who can deliver a Super Bowl.

.

Defensive lineman Michael Bennett was not on the field during the open portion of practice to the media. He has been dealing with a foot injury and is expected to play Sunday against the Rams. Linebacker Sean Lee is sitting out his third straight practice because of pectoral and thigh injuries but there is optimism he will play as well.

Jerry Jones' won three Super Bowl with college coaches Jimmy Johnson and Barry Switzer.
