How bout those Cowboys!

mariner10.jpg

This is Mariner 10. It was the first probe to explore the planet Mercury - which it did WAY back in 1974.

Now you may ask, "Now Charlemagne, what in God's name does THIS have to do with sports?" The answer? Not a Goddamn thing. It's just that this little tidbit of information is still infinitely more useful and worth sharing than whatever the fuck Blackfoot tries doing in this forum.

Jerry Jones on the selection of Gil Brandt into the Pro Football Hall of Fame: "Gil Brandt set the standard for all scouts and personnel executives to follow, and aspire to, in the NFL. He drafted Hall of Fame players in the first round and in the late rounds and helped build the foundation for the tremendous legacy and success that Cowboys enjoy to this day. We are so proud of his accomplishments with the organization and just as grateful for what he has done over the course of the last 30 years an ambassador for the NFL, the Dallas Cowboys and the game of football. Gil changed the NFL in the draft room and is more than worthy of this recognition."

The Cowboys have finalized their staff with the addition of Adam Kleffner as assistant offensive line coach. Kleffner joins the Cowboys from Missouri where he was a quality control coach focusing on the line and earned positive marks from offensive coordinator Derek Dooley, the former Cowboys' receivers coach, and offensive line coach Brad Davis. Marc Colombo was named the offensive line coach midway through last season and Hudson Houck ended the year as a consultant. Colombo signed a new deal after the season. Steve Brown, who helps with running backs and is an offensive assistant, will return as will Andre Gurode and Phillip Tanner as defensive end special teams assistants respectively.

Jason Garrett is starting 2019, the final year of his contract, without the benefit of an extension to take him off the hot seat before the season even begins. In 2014, Garrett entered the final year of his contract after three straight 8-8 finishes and directed the Cowboys to a 12-4 mark that earned him a five-year, $30 million extension

Witten to return to Cowboys, leaving MNF booth
Witten is getting a one-year deal worth $3.5 million

Witten played in 11 Pro Bowls in his 15 years with the Cowboys, becoming the franchise leader in receptions and receiving yards. He also played in more games (239), played in more consecutive games (236), started more games (229) and started more consecutive games (179) than any player in Cowboys history.

The Cowboys do not have a first-round pick because of the Amari Cooper trade, but owner and general manager Jerry Jones said the Cowboys will go through the same evaluation process leading up to the draft as if they have one. “Going to be just as proud of this second-round pick as we are as if we were drafting in the first.

So not one bit different,” Jones said. “I don't look at it any way and in case I might, I'm prepared to reach over there and see and refresh my thoughts about Amari. You get rejuvenated thinking about the future with a young Amari Cooper and feel like that keeps you from being in any way missing the first pick.”

While the expectation is Jason Witten will not play 100 percent of the snaps like he did for most of the first 15 years of his career in his return to the field in 2019, Jerry Jones does not believe the veteran will be a bit piece in the offense.

“I think when you look at how hopefully we can spread the ball around, put enough stuff in during the (organized team activities), put enough stuff in training camp, call them as we go through the season, I think that Witten will have his place,” Jones said. “He's certainly has got his place in what we do in our blocking and protection and running.

While we had functioning blocking and functioning execution with our tight ends (in 2018), we still weren't what we were when Jason was there the year before and that's not to criticize anybody. It's just that we weren't He will elevate us there, Jason. So, no, I don't think he's a progress stopper. I've gotten down as to what he is going to be for us, but he's well worth the roster spot. He's well worth the time on the field to improve us.”
