Joseph Benavidez, longtime UFC flyweight contender, retires from MMA

Benavidez told ESPN on Wednesday that he is retiring from the UFC after 10 years with the promotion and 15 years as a pro overall. News of Benavidez no longer being on the UFC roster surfaced Wednesday on social media and his retirement is the reason, he said. Benavidez will finish with a 15-6 UFC record. Benavidez, 37, said his decision hinged on the fact that he didn't want MMA to feel like a job and not be fun any longer. For the first time in more than a decade, Benavidez was out of the immediate title picture. And he said that everyone he'd end up fighting in the future would all young contenders.

Phil Hawes declines late replacement after opponent falls ill; UFC Fight Night bout off

Phil Hawe had the possibility of two opponents this weekend, but neither bout will happen. Deron Winn, Hawes' scheduled opponent, withdrew from the fight because of an illness, which was not weight cut- or coronavirus-related, UFC announced Friday morning. In Winn's place, UFC signed MMA veteran Chris Curtis to fight Hawes on Saturday at UFC Fight Night in Las Vegas. However, Hawes declined to fight Curtis on a day's notice when he was preparing for Winn, sources told ESPN. So neither Hawes vs. Winn nor Hawes vs. Curtis will happen Saturday. Hawes (11-2) has won seven straight fights, three of them coming in UFC. Curtis (26-8) will remain in UFC, according to his coach, Eric Nicksick of Xtreme Couture. Curtis, a 34-year-old who has been a pro MMA fighter since 2009, has won five in a row following a brief retirement while he was with PFL in 2019.

Former UFC bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes revealed to ESPN on Monday she dealt with injuries to both of her knees during the buildup to her shocking submission loss to Julianna Peña at the end of last year. Nunes (21-5) said she didn't want to use the injuries as an excuse, and credited Peña for stunning her with a punch in the second round. However, the 33-year-old said she probably should have pulled out of the fight and likely would have had she not already been forced to pull out earlier in the year after contracting COVID-19.
